Is there any comic series that you would follow through several different (in style though ideally in quality) writers because you liked the artist?

Vs:

Is there any comic series that you would pick up/drop just because of a change of artists?

Friend Angela once dropped a series for the second reason: it was that other goth thing that wasn't Littly Gloomy (it may have been what Ted Naifeh worked on before Courtney Crumrin).

Gloom Cookie, it was. Ted Naifeh left, and took her interest with her.

I will bear almost anything for good writing. Viz me rating JLA w/Howard Porter.

I actually liked Porter's art.

Odd this should come up today. Last night I picked up a New X-Men trade paperback, the one with lots of Shiar nonsense, and my interest in the story really waned when the guy who wasn't Quitely (and who wasn't very good) was drawing it. Similarly if I'm reading some old Essential Marvel trade I'll often skip through the ones drawn by Don Heck or similar.

Writers still win though.

I don't read comics with bad art or bad writing.

I did stick with 100 Bullets for the first few issues because of the art even though I wasn't then that gone on the writing.

The writing is way more important to me. There have been sections of the Invisibles or New X-Men where the art really took a dive, but you just gotta suffer through.

However, I did pick up a recent issue of Hellblazer and the art was nearly unreadable (unlookable?). And maybe it was just a matter of me jumping in in the middle of a story, but the writing wasn't nearly enough to save it.

Those were the Igor Kordey NXM issues, weren't they? I read an interview where Marvel had him working on FOUR books at the same time (a Black Widow mini, Soldier X / Cable, and NXM, and one other, I think), and in his words "one was bound to suffer", so OF COURSE the one to suffer is the most popular of the bunch.

There was a bit of net furor over the newish Catwoman series, when it was announced that faboo iconical "cartoony" artist Cameron Stewart was leaving, and being replaced with "realist" Paul Gulacy. Some columnist on the Newsarama site actually tried to make a case that Gulacy was better than Stewart & his ilk (Darwyn Cooke, possibly Mike Allred) because drawing like the latter group was "easier" or "simpler" and therefore couldn't possibly compare to the more realistic stylings of Gulacy (& possibly Neal Adams) (& maybe even Alex Ross). Ugh ugh ugh.

Anyway, my point is I hopped on board w/ Catwoman because of the writer (Ed Brubaker), and I'll ride it out regardless of who's drawring. So, yeah, writers win.

For the record, I learned "writers win" the hard way when I bought one of those DC Stan Lee Presents bookshelf one-shots - this was a "thing" where Lee reimagines DC heroes in his own indomitable style. I bought the ...Crisis! one-shot, because it had John Cassaday art. The art was fabulous. The story stunk like a strip club bathroom floor.

Artists I'd possibly ride or die w/, writers be damned: Kevin Maguire, Art Adams, Mr. Cassaday

To be honest, I'd been unable to tell if the writer had changed or not.

the recent issues of Tom Strong, written by some bozo, have been entertaining. I think the character is now so defined that any good writer can produce entertaining Tom Strong stories.

Eh, what are you on about, DV?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 4 March 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

(a bit of checking later) Blimey

four years pass...

The thing about artists is that if I am browsing a new comic in a shop, it is good art that will make me buy it, even if it is bad writing that will make me give up on a title.
