Brubaker, Brubaker, make me a brew...

In addition to the THREE Ed Brubaker books DC's releasing this week (that's Authority: Revolution, Catwoman, and Sleeper), the Distinguished Competition is dropping NEW Planetary, the 2nd issue of We3, and a slew of spandex (Kurt Busiek's 1st JLA, the beginning of Hal Jordan's rejuvenation, Wally reading THE LETTER from Barry Allen, Wonder Woman v. Medusa, Adam Strange Part Deux, and OF COURSE Doom Patrol).

Marvel? Meh.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 25 October 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

And let the record show that the folx @ Previews Review are also praising Superman: Birthright. AND IS THAT THE ORIGINALS I SEE?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 25 October 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Has it really only been a month since the last We3? It feels like that came out in late summer.

Anyway, I'll get that, ElfQuest, Outsiders (see, didn't the last Outsiders come out more recently than We3? nevermind, ignore me), Daredevil, and Strange. That's a pretty fun week, all in all, especially if Outsiders includes more superbitching.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 25 October 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, it's a big DC week right enough. Other than those listed by David already I'm excited about Aquaman, The Losers, Daredevil, Strange and PvP.

Adam Strange is just about the best thing DC have published in an age, isn't it? Until the DC/Wildstorm 'Albion' line kicks off, of course...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I have it in my planner that We3 #1 came out on Sept. 1 and that's MORE than a month ago. What's the hold up, hey?

I'll be getting that and Witching #5. I'll also be trying not to think about Sleeper since I decided I'm only going to get the series in trade paperback (after I unintentionally crumpled my Season 3 #1 and went "Aw fuckit, I'm just gonna wait for the trades.")

I'll also sneak someone's Super Manga Blast out of their box at the comic shop to see if it's got a What's Michael? story to read. Then I'll put it back, no one the wiser.

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Hoo boy, big week for me!

Huk-L, Monday, 25 October 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Planetary and We3, hooray! And for the second tier: Wolverine (Millar's second issue), Elektra - The Hand, and Powerless. Not to mention my Uzumaki vol. 1 and the last two weeks of comics.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Since it's not worth starting a new thread over, there's a new comic remix: http://www.popcultureshock.com/viewer.php?type=features&id=854&p=1

Huk-l, Monday, 25 October 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh excellent, that Detective #27 is finally in softcover.

Huk-L, Monday, 25 October 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

goddamn, that comic remix is funny.

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Monday, 25 October 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The hold up on We3 is that Frank Quitely can't make a monthly schedule. Some artists just can't. He and Bryan Hitch seem to be in that category, sadly.

Gonna be a big week for me. Originals, We3, Adam Strange, Authority, Sandman Mystery Theatre v2, Sleeper, and probably a couple other things. Yeek.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

For some reason I don't mind waiting for We3 because I know it's only going to be 3 issues. It'll be done soon enough, it's not like trying to remember plot points from four issues ago in Planetary when it only comes out like four times per year.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way - my list is based on the ACTUAL shipping list for this week - no Sleeper, alas. And no Lois / Superman commemorative plate for me, either, darn it!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Blimey, has it really been (just short of) nine years since Grant Morrison's first JLA issue? I feel old(er).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't it '97? Isn't that more like 7 years?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 26 October 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It was '94 or '95 - I remember getting the first few issues of JLA from the local comic store next to the University of CT campus when I was actually a student thar.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. It was well after Zero Hour, which was '94, wasn't it after Final Night too? Which was '96, I think?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Come to think of it, JLA might've began in '96. Man, I barely remember Final Night. It was after that Knightfall BS, that much is true. Also, I'm pretty sure JLA has gone bi-weekly during the summer a couple of times, which would explain the relatively high issue count.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It had to be later than 94, he was doing Swamp Thing around then. In more memory-by-biography data, the first issue I picked up was in New Orleans, and I moved there in 1997. Not positive it hadn't been going for a few months when I started reading, mind you.

Was the Midsummer Nightmare Dr Destiny thing a few years earlier than his ongoing run, maybe?

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The Midsummer Nightmare thing lead right into GM's JLA!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Does everyone do that, btw? Remember when comics came out according to where they bought them? I definitely do, and don't for books, CDs, etc. (Although I remember what theaters I saw movies in.)

xpost -- I didn't pick up Midsummer Nightmare until later, so I figured if it had come out earlier it could explain thinking JLA had started earlier, see

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.comics.org/details.lasso?id=59851

JLA #1 cover date Jan '97, so it would been, what Nov. '96 when it actually came out?

Huk-L, Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, so I bought it from the UConn-area comic store after UConn kicked my 0.2 GPA out to the curb. Bastards.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That's right, blame the comic store.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 26 October 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, no - I'm blaming the liquor stores & cafeteria food.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Read While Watching Baseball:

POSSIBLE SPOILERS BE WARNED

AUTHORITY REVOLUTION #1 (Of 12)
EXCELLENT! Dissident super-folk try to take down the Authority! Political intrigue & biff bang pow ahoy!

BIRDS OF PREY #75
EXCELLENT! Oracle, Black Canary, & Huntress scoot from Gotham, relocate center of ops in plane flown by newest BoP LADY BLACKHAWK! (Also, Eduardo Barretto art in the back-up story re: Lady Blackhawk, which is always a good thing.)

CATWOMAN #36
SOMEWHAT OK! Catwoman whups Zeiss, Black Mask messes w/ folk, Oracle is in clear & present danger - this story preceeds the events in BoP, and has SERIOUS ramifications.

FLASH #215
CONFUSING! Stuff about stuff and mind-reboot stuff and spinning stuff. Not satisfying.

GREEN LANTERN REBIRTH #1 (OF 6)
GEEKTASTIC! Ethan Van Sciver is the new Michael Turner, except he's good. Lots of nerdy goodness, lots of cameos, and lots of explosions.

JLA #107
GEEKTASTICALLY RESTRAINED! Martian Manhunter & Flash do monitor duty, setting up shop for the return of the Crime Syndicate. A slow burner, but enjoyable. Huk-L, I think you'll really like this.

LOSERS #17
SAVED FOR LATER!

PLANETARY #21
SAVED FOR LATER! John Cassaday is the new oxygen.

SUPERMAN #210
SUPER! Pushing things forward, this issue sets up a Wonder Woman / Supes showdown. A little confrontational jawing between Bats & Supes. Some Fortress of Solitude action. Also, Brian Azzarello shows how to make Biblical allusions work well in the funny books.

WE 3 #2 (Of 3)
STORE DIDN'T HAVE IT! I STILL NEED #1, TOO!

WONDER WOMAN #209
STONE COLD! Medusae attacks WW, WW attacks Medusae, Ares steps in, big fight next issue!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #513
MELODRAMATIC! Spidey confronts the Wonder Twins; one flips out, the other inadvertently pulls a Gwen Stacy; conclusion next month. Am not sure where this will end up, but am able to overlook heavy handed drama because of my curiosity re: what happens next month. All in all, the 3 "real" Spidey titles have been scuffling a bit, with this one possibly my fave. Yes, it says a lot about me that I'm liking the adulturous soap operatics of ASM more than the multi-colored biff bang spectacularness of Millar's Spidey. STAY TUNED!

DAREDEVIL #66
EXCELLENT! Story of the FIRST Kingpin; Alex Maleev spreads his wings; final scene looks like a confrontation between Robert Duvall & M. Emmet Walsh, which is A-OK in my book. And, yes, there is yellow DD action. I wasn't so keen of the last DD arc, but this issue seems to be right in line with the high points of BMB's DD work.

WOLVERINE #21
MILLARIFFIC! It's like his Spidey work, but tons more fun! Wolverine's gonna attack the FF next issue! He kills a shark! Elektra reads a book! Seriously, this is a lot of fun.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 28 October 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, drat. I was going to grab JLA, but I didn't. If they still have one next week (what comes out next week, will I even go to the comic shop?) I'll grab it.

Would you say that this new Daredevil issue would be a good place to join in on the fun? I've read the first two Bendis/Maleev trades, but have resisted buying by the issue because I'm afraid of how much catching up I'll have to do.

Huk-L, Thursday, 28 October 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

When i read Wolverine I got a wierd feeling of status-quo vertigo. "We're so far INTO THE MURDER, how will we ever get down?" I mean, surely at the end of this they'll just execute him in a six-part decompressed arc called 'Decomissioned', where the whole thing is him strapped into a molecular-disintegration chair having flashbacks to his most evil kills in the name of 'the Man' during the nanosecond before his atoms are split!

Obviously he can't be DEAD dead, but I'd be surprised if he wasn't at least exiled to the Micro-infinity or some kind of Exo-world superimposed on our own reality by a quantum prism as the ULTIMATE JAIL.

Vic Fluro, Thursday, 28 October 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

He kills a shark!

Is this anti-jumping the shark commentary?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll say it again, D, you read EVERYthing. (This isn't a criticism.)

I liked Michael Turner! On Witchblade and Fathom (especially), at least. But okay, yeah, I'm the token former Top Cow reader here, I think.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 28 October 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Question: would I be able to enjoy this Authority series having never read an issue of the Authority?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Huk-L: Yes, this is a great STARTING POINT for new readers to JUMP ON BOARD with the EISNER-AWARD WINNING team of BENDIS & MALEEV. (Did I mention I bought the new Previews, too?)

Jordan: Yes, I think you would. Also, it seems to be light years better than the last Authority reboot (w/ Robbie Morrison), especially in the art department. Seeing Brubaker ably tackle political stuff whets my appetite for his Captain American stuff, too.

Vic: I know what you mean, but I get that voibe from most books, so I just ignore it & try to enjoy the story. Notable exceptions: Identity Crisis, Daredevil, Birds of Prey. (Can't explain why the current Avengers shenanigans aren't giving me the same frisson.) And not to slight Millar's antics, but I'm really enjoying the Romita / Janson art (w/ PAUL MOUNTS on the colors - he's definitely making things look super-nice).

Tep: I guess I don't really have a problem w/ Turner, but his IC covers (especially #1) have been disappointing, and I'm laying the blame on his easel for this interminable fake Supergirl nonsense in Supes / Bats, so he is A1 on my comix shitelist right now. Also, the elf ears & 6-packs are disconcerting.

Tep II: Please put read in big ol' scarequotes. Also, I wish my local store stocked more indie stuff - I have to drive 30 minutes out of my way to go pick up stuff like Demo & Berlin (& Seaguy!!), which irks me. Also, there are my finances to worry about. Clearly I'm in the wrong hobby if I'm worrying about my bottom line, though.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 28 October 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally the Earth-2 Tep now.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 28 October 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Is WWII over yet where you live? Wait, that's Earth-X.

Huk-L, Thursday, 28 October 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

In my world, Ted Williams won the World Series in 1946, and the Curt Schilling of your world read about it in a science fiction book and decided to devote his life to doing the same. Or something like that.
