Which Comics Creator Is Scariest?

Alan Moore? Dave Sim? Crumb? or is it always the quiet ones...

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 31 October 2004 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Tharg the Mighty. None of the others have Rigellian Hotshots at their disposal.

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 31 October 2004 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Crumb is a weedy little man, so surely not scary in person. Sim's a bit nerdy in person, so not him either. Alan Moore is about 6'6 and looks like Charles Manson. The fact that he is a very sweet man may come into it, depending on context.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 31 October 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I love it when you give us the lowdown on creators, Martin.

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 31 October 2004 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Is it easy to set Sim off on a bizzare rant or does he tend to keep them for his writing?

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 31 October 2004 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Well the times I talked to him all came before he got so crazy about women, but he did rant on a bit. But when he did it seemed sad and bitter much more than scary. He only seemed somewhat non-geeky in a comic fan context, but then that's setting the bar rather low.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 31 October 2004 18:14 (twenty years ago)

I've never spoken to him but the one whose picture has scared me the most is Peter David. (Actually that's a lie, I've read his Usenet posts and he often came across as irascibly lovable.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 31 October 2004 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Andy Diggle's occasionally intimidating. From photos, I'd say Sim, as he looks like the kind of man who'd draw you in slowly to his web of fear, and then butcher you in his basement before parading around in your skin.

Vic Fluro, Sunday, 31 October 2004 21:30 (twenty years ago)

But not before chaining you to a radiator and spending several months telling you about his, er, unique interperations of various religious texts. the butchering would probably be something of a relief.

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 31 October 2004 21:52 (twenty years ago)

I haven't been to a convention for yearrrrrs, but Dave Sim and Gerhard are completely nice, very self-depricating and completely non-intimidating in person. Ditto Peter David, who takes time out to hold lengthy conversations with each fan while signing books.

Paris Cullins almost made me cry when I was 10 and refused to sign my Blue Beetle comics unless he could personalize them with my name and hold me prisoner for a lecture on how I'd burn in hell if ever tried to sell those autographed comics...fucker.

ng, Sunday, 31 October 2004 22:50 (twenty years ago)

jessica abel!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Actually, has El4yne Riggs ever made a comic?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 1 November 2004 14:40 (twenty years ago)

http://www.soulmateproductions.com/Pages/Sailor01.html

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Of the two I've met (Tom Grummett and Chester Brown), Grummett was the scariest, but, uh, he wasn't actually scary at all.

Huk-L, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago)

(To Andrew:) Oh for fuck's sake.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Was unicornteaparty.com taken?

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 November 2004 17:07 (twenty years ago)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 1 November 2004 18:12 (twenty years ago)

I don't know who this Riggs person is, but she seems like a bad woman.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 1 November 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago)

She's (or was, I don't know) one of the Most Frequent Posters on the rec.arts.comics.* newsgroups, and really really annoying. Especially once she married an inker of minor success and acted like it counted as starfucking.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 November 2004 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Let us move onto greener pastures, my flock, lest we tempt the fates & shit.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 1 November 2004 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I should know better. I still have pent-up bitchiness from forcing myself to leave the room rather than dress down an instructor this morning.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 November 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago)

(btw unicornteaparty.com has not been taken) (hahahaha)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 1 November 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago)

(It's sickly gratifying that Dan appreciated unicornteaparty.com!)

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 November 2004 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I have met this person whose initials are the same as Emergency Room, and she wins. I was Central Mailer of CAPA-Alpha back when she was a in a joint membership with a previous husband. AIIEEEE! Many times scarier than D4v3 S!m.

the apex of nadirs (Rock Hardy), Monday, 1 November 2004 20:35 (twenty years ago)

The very moment I can spare, I'm writing a comic called 'Mummy, Do Unicorns Dream?' which will explore similar territory.

Vic Fluro, Monday, 1 November 2004 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Take a look at the pics on the "Home" link of the sailor comic. I think I threw up in my mouth a little.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:02 (twenty years ago)

See, I wasn't going to go there even though it did occur to me.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:10 (twenty years ago)

We're all doomed.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 08:00 (twenty years ago)

I feel incredibly guilty now.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but at the end of the day, you don't have to go home and be fucked by R0bin Riggs.

Andrew Farrell (is going to hell) (afarrell), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 13:45 (twenty years ago)

REPENT! BRING OUT YR DEAD!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:11 (twenty years ago)

I am in tears.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:12 (twenty years ago)

(Also maybe a moderator should change the above link so that it has to be cut-and-pasted rather than a derect referral?)

(Also I am still in tears)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:23 (twenty years ago)

(I think that would be a good idea, although maybe we're being paranoid. Do non-computer people look at their referral logs anymore? I don't even have access to mine.)

(I am not so much in tears as gasping, "Andrew!!!" like a little old lady.)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:26 (twenty years ago)

I removed the blue writing & have hidden this thread from the dreaded threat zone of THE INDEX!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:28 (twenty years ago)

My work here, whatever it was, is done.

Also that's a really good idea about the link.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:31 (twenty years ago)

(If/When we do actually meet, Andrew, I owe you so many beers for that.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:32 (twenty years ago)

(Andrew, I owe you a donkey punch and a beer. You can decide how you want them.)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Dan: If an ILX couple of our mutual acquaintance actually get their act together and marry next year, I may take you up on it.

Also of course it's possible that that little advice may be the only good thing at the end of this particular day.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:39 (twenty years ago)

David: I think I already owe you a beer for getting you to listen to Christy Moore during 102 Beats That. So, uh, let's never meet.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:47 (twenty years ago)

nine months pass...
In "clutching my head like a stunned monkey" news, I just recieved mail from Thomas G4lloway, 10 years after I was on r.a.c in any regular manner, saying "I'll be in town this weekend!"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 August 2005 07:46 (nineteen years ago)

HOLY SHIT DUDE

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 August 2005 12:40 (nineteen years ago)

I KNOW! How do you prepare to meet the FAQkeeper of rec.arts.comics.misc? A man who turned down a RNG? A five-time Squiddy winner? A member of the Black Ink Irregulars?

I'm sure he's probably a nice guy, but he's a wormhole into dimensions of dorkiness that I'd mostly forgotten.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 August 2005 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

He actually is a really nice guy in person, the brief time that I've chatted with him.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 12 August 2005 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

oh man, this reminds me of finally talking to m1ke p34rce(faq guy) on the phone, in my days of heavy rec.arts.tv.mst3k usage

kingfish completely hatstand (Kingfish), Friday, 12 August 2005 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

That BII link! JESS NEVINS! MICHAEL CHARY! Mind is blown with nostalgia.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 12 August 2005 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

Blimey.

Tom is very nice, if a little Comic Book Guy at times. Which isn't exactly shocking.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 August 2005 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

Wow. It's amazing seeing all of these people turn their obsessions into... something very public and lucrative. It makes me feel like a slacker.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Saturday, 13 August 2005 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

Whatever happened to Hosun S. Lee, that's what I'd like to know…

Ward Fowler, Friday, 13 September 2013 06:23 (eleven years ago)

Djp, what was the comic?

how's life, Friday, 13 September 2013 10:42 (eleven years ago)

Honestly it's probably not that funny if you aren't already super annoyed by 3l4yn3; I found it on the Wayback Machine and it wasn't as funny (although it's still pretty bad): http://web.archive.org/web/20080703212358/http://www.soulmateproductions.com/Pages/Sailor01.html
