what titles do you get monthly?

I used to get La Perdida, Hellblazer, The Filth, Invisibles, Top Ten, New X-Men, and X-Statix but now for various reasons I'm down to X-Statix, a fun but shallow comic, and the usual indies (Eightball, L&R, Chris Ware, which I either wait for in trade or which come out irregularly). The list might be biased towards more mainstream stuff but that's just because the indie titles don't seem to come out as regularly. Is there anything you recommend?

(Excluding Y the Last Man, which from the graphic novel I read, seems (maybe intentionally?) kind of sophomoric)

I love Y: The Last Man. I get that monthly as well as 1602, Fables (and pretty much anything written by Willingham), Ultimate Fantastic Four, just started Conan. These aren't monthly but I get them whenever they come out: Lenore and Bear.

Hmmmm, Y, Fables, New X-Men (although only for one more issue I guess), Planetary (though it's only nominally monthly, really more like bi-annually), Lucifer, Human Target, 1602, the current Azzarello Batman run, probably too many others.

I'd really like to read more indie books, but aside from Oni and a couple other publishers my comic book store just doesn't get that much in.

I'd like to get more indie books too, but I don't know where to start.

I don't have a file or anything but I regularly pick up:
Green Lantern (it's a bad habit)
Superman/Batman (I love Ed McGuiness's art, now that he's off, I don't know if I'll keep buying)
Legion (I hopped on at the beginning of the last arc, which just ended, and I think I'm done)

Okay, that's not much. I think I prefer trades. I know I prefer trades. I'm such a part-timer. I hate myself.

One of my annoyance of late is picking up collections of Grant Morrison's JLA to find hat I'm also paying for Mark Waid stories.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I prefer Waid's stuff.
Actually, the only three JLA collections I have are Year One, World War III and the Obsidian Age (I count as one).

I haven't been terribly impressed with any of them.

Blade of the Immortal
X-Statix
Gotham Central
Wonder Woman
Wolverine
Adventures of Superman (starting next issue)

What do you prefer about the Waid issues?

ken chen, Wednesday, 10 March 2004 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Nominally monthly comics I must read as soon as they come out:
Cerebus (only through tom'w, sob)
Promethea (more like biannual at this point)
The Ultimates (ditto)
Queen & Country
Daredevil (Bendis only)
New X-Men (only as long as Morrison's doing it)
Lucifer
The Pulse (on the strength of a very good first issue!)

Not exactly monthly, but still pretty regularly published and quite wonderful: Finder.

What do you prefer about the Waid issues?

Well, I don't think it's quite fair of me to say I prefer what I've read solely because of the writer. The only Morrison JLA I've read is the World War Three collection, and I don't know how representative that was of his run. I just felt like the grandeur of that arc was sort of tacked-on. Any suggestions as to which of his collections are better?

I think Waid's stuff appeals to the 12 year-old comic fan in me. Even supposedly darker stuff like Kingdom Come.

Crisis Times Five is my fave Morrison JLA arc. I liked the One Million miniseries / crossover event, too, though I didn't read any of the connective issues (& really didn't need to).

I'd have to pick the Rock Of Ages, specifically the future Darkseid issues.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that the one where all the villains team up under Lex Luthor with the idea of running their evil like a (evil) corporation? If so, I read the first couple issues and always wanted to finish it (the only JLA I've ever read).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the one. In a way it's his greatest hits: Daft big idea (corporate takeover) + time-travel to vast Fourth World-like future + ominous foreshadowing + triumph by smart use of low powered heroes (I've probably mentioned before that the way they kill Darkseid is one of my favourite ideas ever) + great cover to the last issue "No, Superman! You have to let the Injustice League escape!" + "Never underestimate the sentimentality of a Scotsman".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'm going to the comic shop this afternoon. If they don't have The Golden Age in, I'll probably grab Rock of Ages. Thanks.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 11 March 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot to say Green Arrow. I picked that up yesterday, and the last issue of the Flash.
And I picked up Rock of Ages, which I'm halfway through and sort of, huh? over. It seems a little effed up. Not like trippy effed up, but like, I don't know.
I also picked up the Outsiders trade, and I like it except Winick seems to be trying to hard with the strong language thing.
