A question from me about comic consumption

It seems that many people here read "trades" and see it as some kind of special thing to buy a single issue. Is this nornal? If not, what is normal? And why?

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

When I got all into comics again, I was like "I'm just reading trades, I'm not gonna suckered into having to show up every week like a Pavlovian dog to buy comics that only serve to make me want to by the next issue."
But I'm a sucker. I buy lots of issues now and hardly any trades.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Normal is wherever you're at.

There has been a move to TPBs by both publishers and fans - Marvel has become notorious over the past couple of years for actually pacing their story arcs so they can fit within a 6-issue length TPB, regardless of how padded or fluffed the arc might seem. (Key offenders in this decompression: Geoff Johns' Avengers, Greg Rucka's Wolverine, Bruce Jones' Hulk; people shove Bendis into this hole, but I don't think it's fair). Also, Marvel began an agressive TPB program, wherein just about everything they published was being collected soon after the final monthly issue hit the stands. As a result, fans started to "wait for the trade" at the expense of purchasing the monthly title - it's more convenient to grab the story in one collection, and it's probably cheaper than buying the individual issues. Not sure when DC jumped on this bandwagon, but they're on it to some degree.

Of course, when folks carry this "wait for the trade" mentality over to the small press publishers is when the fan starts to dispense the feces. But, then, I think more small publishers are ignoring the monthly market and simply publishing Graphic Novels.

Also, if the Dipshits That Be are basing the success of a new title on monthly sales, but make it clear that a TPB of the first six issues will be solicited two months prior to the completion of the title's first arc, but are dismayed when sales on the monthly issues are low because (surprise!) fannies are "waiting for the trade", and said dipshits cut bait on the new title as a result of the disappointing monthly sales before even seeing how the TPB sells, then they are truly worthy of their dipshittiness.

As for the people here - I was under the impression that most folks here buy single issues. As a long time geek, I can't see myself really getting over the glee I have on NEW COMIC DAY!

Ah, I'm still not sure about this. I buy lots of issues because I don't want to wait, and also to try things out. It can also be a nice ritual to go to the comic store and have fun comics to read every week.

However...

For the comics I really like, I like having them in trades. They're so much easier to re-read and lend to friends, and they look nice on the bookshelf instead of hiding in stupid boxes. I would also like a definitive answer on the "YOU'RE KILLING COMICS BY CHOOSING NOT TO BUY ISSUES!" issue.

In an ideal world (i.e. where I am KING), The Big Two (mostly Marvel) (OK, probably exclusively Marvel) would:

- not flood the market with new titles simply to see what sticks, but instead exercise some pre-emptive quality control in putting new product out in the marketplace

- when putting out new product, either HOLD OFF ON ANY TPBing (for at least a year) until monthly sales dictate that there might be interest in such collections, or just release the damn thing as a collection from the get-go and screw the monthly sales (SEE MANGA YOU TWERPS)

- exercise quality control in what's actually collected - you're going to have X-Men TPBs up the yin-yang, but there's no need to collect Hulk / Wolverine: Six Hours or Hulk: Nightmerica or Captain America: What Price Glory or Wolverine: Exile just because you can; if you're not going to reprint Street Poet Ray or The Life of Pope John Paul II, then you should extend this sense of pride and self-worth across the entire line and show some restraint

- cut the crap re: not allowing re-orders & forcing retailers to either A) put all their eggs in one basket and guestimate how many issues of The Eternal or Runaways they should purchase / eat or B) limit their purchases to the cash cows at the expense of the new stuff, thereby reinforcing the Spidey / X hegemony, thereby stultifying any sort of growth for the Marvel market outside of the direct market mores of Cornelius Q. Sweatyballz & his group of internet friends

I don't know if there's really a good answer to this, since I'm always really happy when I'm able to catch up on a new title that's been getting some buzz by getting a trade and jumping in with the issues (this happened with Y, Fables, Sleeper, etc.).

The collection-from-the-start thing would be cool if they were cheaper, otherwise I think many people are much less likely to take a chance on something new for $15-20, and they might not get the chance to build up that buzz.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, you're right, Jordan. Probably the best thing that's been done re: the issue of "jumping on board cheaply" are those mondo sized reprints of buzz titles, collecting the first 2-3 issues of a title for nearly half the cost of the monthly. FWIW, that's how I got on board with Y.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's what I did with Runaways. The cheap Gotham Central trade was great as well, too bad they're taking so long on following up with the others.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, but when is NEW COMIC DAY? I am constantly arriving at the store to find that the things I want have already gone!

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Comics ship on Tuesday, so arrive on Wednesday, I believe.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

When did this happen, I remember Friday was new comics day when I was a lad (late 80s). Maybe shipping to remote parts of the world like SK have improved since the 1880s.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Wednesday is new comic book day in the U.S.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

There used to be more distributors than there are now (it's really just Diamond now), I don't know if that might have something to do with it -- maybe your store(s) used to deal with a distributor that delivered on Thursdays and has since been eaten or destroyed by the Mighty Geppi.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Sometimes I don't understand the things you people say.

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I buy the comics as they come out. I only buy trades for things I've missed, often because I wasn't aware I wanted them when they were coming out. It was only due to a birthday present in June that I became a Bendis fan, for instance, so I've been buying the DD/Powers/Alias trades gradually, but as soon as he took over Avengers I started buying the regular issues.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

adam, ask your store about "pulling" the issues you want, i.e. they "pull" the title you request from off the shelve and into your own private file.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The only comics I actually buy are trades; I'm still not that keen on actually going into a comic shop again. As this latest taste cycle of mine inevitably goes indie I will probably start on the issues though - Alan had a bag of comics in the pub the other day and it struck me how pretty they all looked (even if the insides were all bedwetter nonsense).

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahaha!

Happy New Comic Day everyone!

adam... (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello Paycheck, so long it's been good to know you. Fables #31 I will be buying you over lunch, it is very dangerous to my wallet that the comic book/video store is 1 block away from work.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

All of my hopeful purchases are in alphabetical order!

» GREEN LANTERN: LEGACY — THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF HAL JORDAN
  » IDENTITY CRISIS #6 (OF 7)
  » JSA #67
  » JUSTICE LEAGUE: ELITE #5 (OF 12)

JL: E is kind of Naff.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I work close to TWO comic book stores and then there is another two waiting for me after the commute home!

adam... (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I am an hour away from the nearest shoppe! Any wonder why I barely frequent ILC now.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a comic shop about a block and a half from my house, but they never get their shipments on time and generally suck, but they have very good quarter bins. The good place is not really that far from my house, but too far to walk in November, and by bus it takes me an extra 90 minutes to go there and back on my way home from work. I need to get a car.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I buy most things in trades these days - I don't really keep up with what's new, and hear about most good titles after they've been coming out for a while.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I went and they still didn't have a reprint of Rebirth. :(

Reading comics is very frustrating.

adam... (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the GL: Reprint isn't due until next week or whenever #2 comes out. You're not missing that much, really.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It's cool, but it's setup. If you can't get it before #2 comes out, I'd go ahead and start with #2, we can always fill you in if you're confused.
