Barry Ween: Boy Genius?

Or just a snotty, foul-mouthed, too-smart-for-his-own-good little shit?

I got Vol. 1 in the mail yesterday and read the three stories in it. It's all right and one part I actually laughed at, but I don't think it's as hilarious as everyone makes it out to be.

Any one read it? Does the series get better/funnier? It came highly recommended to me by a guy from my comic shop...

I read the issue on Free Comic Book Day. It was alright, but it seems to occupy a weird space...on one hand the feel was actually a bit more childish that I would have liked, but of course kids can't actually read it on account of the fuck quotient and the hooker jokes.

Up there with my favorites, although I don't remember which stories are in which volume, and they don't all have the same "re-read value." It's very Calvin-and-Hobbes-y, I always thought, but six years or so older.

This volume starts off with the space-time portal, moves onto a Jurrasic Park-esque story and then a school trip to the art museum. My favorite line was:

Bully: Hey Weenie! You suck any good weenies lately? Huh?

Barry: Yes, I have. Your father paid me one hundred dollars to suck his last night. I usually only charge fifty but your mom wanted to watch.

This is a Judd Winick joint, no?

Or is that Jimmy Corrigan?

Yep, it's Winick -- his pre-Big Two title (not the only one, but I think the most successful of them).

The best one, until the third volume -- the monkey ones -- is the one where Jeremy gets mistaken for Barry, I think. Just the right mix of comedy, plot, and buddy stuff.
