Elektra, not as a series (because that clearly is a dud), but as a character I have to say ultimately comes down as a dud. Only one writer ever did any Elektra stories of considerable worth (Frank Miller), and plenty of other talented scribes have failed miserably (Bendis, Rucka).
But even with Miller, there was always a shallowness or remoteness to Elektra as a narrative character -- e.g. in Elektra: Assassin, Miller manages to write from her perspective for 1.5-2 issues before switching to another character for the remainder of the run. In other words, there seems to be a fundamental flaw with her that prevents sustained stories to be told about her specifically -- it's either how she fits into Matt Murdock's life, or how Garrett's on her leash, etc.
The problem becomes clearer when she's been given her own series, where the laconic/cold-blooded assassin angle gets far too much focus than it should, leaving Elektra as incredibly boring, and for the likes of Bendis and Rucka, atypically superficial characers. The one post-Miller writer who avoided falling into this trap was Scott Morse's 4-issue mini -- he actually gave her lines to speak to a cat, and the amount of characterization right there probably outweighed everything done since Miller. However, even Morse eventually succumbs to a contrived and conventional ending of the series, so really, there hasn't been a great story told completely from Elektra's POV.
(Actually, I just rememebered Elektra & Wolverine, an illustrated prose piece by Rucka and Yoshitaka, which was actually wonderful, likely due to the fact that prose can portray an inarticulate character better than comics can.)

The one character Rucka couldn't sort out. How do you write about an unstoppable, inarticulate assasin who has died a few times in an interesting manner? Only ever by concentrating on the people around her.

Exactly, so thread derail: Elektra's headscarf, C/D?

Duh, like that needs to be asked.

I always assumed it started off white but got consistently redder the more times she died and came back to life...
