Finally then, here we commiserate belatedly and in effect eulogize the final issue of the wonderfully wacky, and I daresay, ironic, X-STATIX

This is the third time I've considered doing this thread, let's see if I hit submit this time.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Evie was one of those characters I *wanted* to return from the dead. I liked her, Guy, Dead Girl, etc. - probably more than any of the X-books' teams.

The latest trade is on hold at the library. I'll be sadder when the next one comes out.

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought you didn't like iromy in comics!

adam... (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I made an exception and bought the first 8 issues of the Milligan/Allred X-Force despite not having picked up a Marvel or DC comic for years and totally loved it. But I lost track and didn't pick up any of X-Statix. Am I missing out?

ng, Wednesday, 17 November 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

X-Statix is exactly the same, Marvel just wanted the X-Force name back so they could release this year's worst comic.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Please note that X-Force became X-Statix TWO YEARS before Liefeld was allowed to rear his head and bray, though maybe they were planning this a long long time ago. If so, WTF, do you actually hate yourselves, Marvel?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps it took Liefield two years to do all his fabulous drawings.

Mark C (Markco), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sam doesn't look like a chicken yet, I have to start over."

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Negotiations on the exact amount of strippers and coke fluctuated for 18 months around the final figure (none).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"damn, I accidentally drew someone whose biceps aren't bigger than their head! I have to start over!"

Mark C (Markco), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"Damn it, these teeth are too short! C'mon, Rob! Think gingivitis! THINK GINGIVITIS! Wait a sec - maybe I can trace over this Rick Veitch Supreme art for a few pages ... yeah, that's the ticket."

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought you didn't like iromy in comics!

Confound it, I've been found out!

ng, I'd have to say that only the first X-Statix trade is really in keeping with the spirit of the Milligan/Allred X-Force, since the better part of X-Statix (more like the worse -- hyuk!) is very pomo pastiche, lacking the (OH NO SIMPSONSIST ARGUMENT!!) heart of X-Force.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

If I've only read X-Statix and liked what I've read, should I read X-Force?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure!

Especially if the Statix that you read was the first trade.

Generally, I think that Force has better and bigger aspirations, and is sometimes more epic, in fact sometimes it seems like it's using the classic X-stuff as a blueprint for its stories. Ergo my "heart" comment. Statix can have bigger laughs, but it's sort of like the distinction between (YET ANOTHER SIMPSONS REFERENCE) Bart making a poo joke vs. Homer giving up his pirated cable.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Also yes (but only the Milligan-Allred ones, obviously)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Can someone explain Doop to me?

ng, Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

He's a sex god. He's friends w/ Wolverine. He likes to watch. And he's super-powerful. Also, he's Doop.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF Liefeld is back? I hate his artwork it's like a badly traced Todd McFarlane, snappy ankle hell.

What is the worst comic of the year that Andrew refers to?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Liefeld's nu-X-Force, I believe. I read a few pages online and I still can't seem to erase the memory from my brane.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It's X-Force #1: http://www.milehighcomics.com/firstlook/marvel/xforce1/

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

:(

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Liefeld's art is why girls shy away from comics.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Fabian really disappointed me with going back to X-Force, but he sounds like he has so much fun with the ridiculousness of it that I can't blame him. I'm just not gonna actually buy or read it.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

X-Force is now a mini-series, as opposed to an ongoing series. Whether this is due to lack of sales or Marvel coming to their senses is unclear. Unfortunately, that still means there's still 3 more issues to come. DAMN THOSE TEETH!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Had Thunderbolts not been planned, or FabNic not assigned to it, when X-Force was originally put together, maybe? I'd like to think it's lack of sales, though.

I just realized what Thunderbolts reminded me of -- Outsiders. A very Marvel Outsiders, to the extent you can judge from one issue, and without the casual sex (thus far).

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

this is not the Batman And His Fairly Lame Super-Pals "Outsiders" then?

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 18 November 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, the new Outsiders are very different -- Nightwing was the leader for awhile, and Black Lightning's daughter is in it, which I guess are the main points of connection to the original, but it's definitely not Batman's Alternate League (which was such a weird concept for a group).

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 18 November 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Fabian really disappointed me with going back to X-Force, but he sounds like he has so much fun with the ridiculousness of it that I can't blame him.

To be fair, all he does is script. Every time he writes them (without Rob) it's usually of a good to great standard.

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 12 August 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

Or have you guys already discussed this in some backwaters thread?

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 12 August 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

No, this is news to me. WooHoo!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 13 August 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)
