What kind of god would allow such things?

The same god that would allow the writer of Catwoman (the movie) to get another job writing the Transformers screenplay!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Granted, this (the V For Vendetta thing) doesn't sound so bad YET... See, I have rose-colored contacts sutured to my eyes, so everything's just hunky-dory. Ooo, landmines.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 November 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"V For Vendetta takes place in the distant future that was 1998. In this reality, Germany emerged victorious from WWII"

WRONG!

In an ideal world a V film would be shot in the claustrophobic, spare style of British noir from the 40s and 50s, possibly even in black and white. I'm sure they'll find a way to shoehorn some nice shiny CGI in there somewhere, though.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Not just wrong, but dead wrong. I'm impressed.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, now that I actually read the article's synopsis of V - that's not even remotely close to accurate, is it? It's not even remotely close to "being vague for the sake of keeping plot twists under wraps", right? (I ask because I haven't read V in over 10 years.) (Also, the ficus tree in the corner is distracting me.)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if V will be turned into some sort of messianic superhero, like Neo from Matrix, instead of the symbol for anarchism he/she is in the book. The worst-case scenario would obviously be revealing his/her face, like they did in the Judge Dredd movie. If that won't happen, I wonder who'll they hire to play V... I guess they could go the Star Wars route and use some no-namer while someone else will provide the voice.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The synopsis they've given is totally contrary to the whole point of V, which is that it presents a very British version of facsism.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I read the synopsis more carefully, and it was just weird... Don't they want to make the British the bad guys? Do we need another film with evil Nazis? I think there's was no mention of Germans in the comic book, didn't the alternative timeline only begin in the eighties with Labor winning the election? (Though Moore never made it clear how'd they get to Fascism from that...)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there was a nuclear war and the resulting social chaos made the rise of fascism possible. Moore's since been on record saying that it's actually an over-optimistic view of what would happen after such a war.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

But the most impending question is, will the movie feature V playing that one song on the piano? Will we finally get to hear it? Has anyone ever tried playing it according to the notes on the comic, I've always assumed Moore actually composed the song.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Tuomas, there's a link to David J of Bauhaus singing it on this thread:

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

They'll probably get Will Smith to do a rap version for the film.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

V For Vendetta has been literally crying out for a screen adaptation

ahem. the Germans thing makes a bit more sense now that we know we're dealing with an 8th Grader.

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really know what the article said since the writing style was quite unbearable.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you never read Empire Online before? It's all like that.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

They'll probably get Will Smith to do a rap version for the film.

Oh Jesus.. now youve put that idea out into 'thought space' - its almost inevitable... i can almost hear it now..

Viggidy Viggidy!

V is for Vendetta

I'm ice cold like a cornetta

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

stone like rosetta!

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Amazon's editorial review:

"A frightening and powerful story of the loss of freedom and identity in a totalitarian world, V for Vendetta takes place in an alternate future in which Germany wins WWII and Britain becomes a fascist state. A vigilante named "V" stalks the streets of London trying to free England of its ideological chains. Moore's poetic language coupled with Lloyd's eerie, washed-out color art makes this a captivating read sure to stay with you."

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Gee, that all kind of misses the point, huh? Esp. as it related to Thatcher's England.

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, and Empire seemed to have copied their synopsis from Amazon. See upthread.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, if it had been the Germans occupying England, it would have been an Us vs Them thing, but Moore was like "Hey! This is the road we're on!"

Huk-L, Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Exactly. It makes it sound like jingoistic pap.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 18 November 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

You said that like it's a bad thing.
