Alan Moore's "1963" - classic or dud

I've finally read it. Thanks William Crump.

Anyway, what do you all make of this? I was enjoying all the early Marvel pastiche stuff, but the ending gave the impression it was all going to turn into some uber-sucky Image version of "Secret Wars". That would not be good. I know the annual never saw the light of day, but did word of what was meant to be in it ever filter out into the world?

My pleasure — these days I'm always happy to divest myself of possessions.

It seems (cue Wallace Shawn) inconceivable that Moore didn't have the script for the annual already done when the plug was pulled — I wonder if he'd have the rights to publish just the script?

Liked it very much. The pastiche adverts on the back, especially the reading course one - 'Embarrassed by you reading' I think it said - are superb. I konw they are paradies, but the stories are good too.

I've only read one issue. It was pretty funny and very clever, but a bit throwaway. It seemed like something Moore came up with in ten minutes.

the fundamental "1963" question: would you be better off just reading reprints of actual comics from 1963?

He would, but it really doesn't exist. He even came up with a new, contemporally relevant plot about five years ago, but it foundered on the Image founders' disinterest again.

It's "Shamed By You English?"

I remember a very funny pisstake of the Marvel Method in the one I read which involved the writer giving the artist a script which read: "A big fight. Maybe involving some kind of space monster."

one year passes...
are these collected anywhere?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 02:48 (twenty years ago)

Nope. Never got collected.

There was a time when I loved these books, but I'm really finding it difficult to sustain love for Moore's pastiche projects. I mean, they're entertaining and all, but aside from that, are they offering up anything new?

I know, they're comic books. They're not supposed to be much more than entertaining...

There's no point in collecting, because they never finished it. And you can buy most issues for 25c in ALL COMIC SHOPS across America. Bissette only ran out of complete sets, with his issues signed, at cover price, about a month ago.

It amazes me that you can buy these for 25c a pop. I'd never seen them anywhere when Curious George offered to sell them, and I thought he was ripping himself off with the price he charged me.

I thought I was ripping you off by breaking even!
