(And again, I didn't vote for anything I haven't read relatively recently.)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

oh wah no fair asking now i know what actually won etc!!

(i will look at the noms in a bit and see if i can reconstruct it "judiciously and unbiasedly") (knowing that i can't)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of my ordering was purely arbitrary because I was tired of trying to figure out how on earth to compare Calvin and Hobbes with Spider-Man. Parts I'm still second-guessing: putting C&H above Uncle Scrooge, voting for Pogo when it's been about ten years since I've read more than a scattering of it, voting for Spy vs Spy instead of Bone (which I did because:

a) I had only recently finished reading Bone;

b) Spy vs Spy's strengths are not shared by anything else on my ballot, and yet are very comics-specific strengths.)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot to vote... if I hadn't, votes would have gone to the obvious stuff, and also to "Judge Dredd - the Day The Law Died", "No! Let Me Drown etc.", "The Trigan Empire" and many others.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

My ordering was fairly arbitrary too. I came back from the pub one night and realised the deadline was pretty soon. Still, it's not a bad list.

Wooden (Wooden), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember Watchmen came at No. 12, and Nemesis The Warlock at No.1.

No Let Me Drown was at No. 25.

Vic Fluro, Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, other corollary to my internal voting guidelines: nothing that I expected to nominate or vote for in a 2004 poll, hence no Seaguy. I don't know if Powers is an exception or not, because I wasn't really voting for it on the strength of its last eleven months.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

My votes:

1. Top 10 (Moore)
2. New X-Men (Morrison)
3. Fables (Willingham)
4. Hellblazer: Dangerous Habits (Ennis)
5. Queen & Country (Rucka)
6. Powers (Bendis)
7. The Invisibles (Morrison)
8. Watchmen (Moore)
9. Planetary (Ellis)
10. Seaguy (Morrison)
11. JLA (Morrison)
12. Flex Mentallo (Morrison)
13. Sandman: A Doll's House (Gaiman)
14. Hellboy: A Chained Coffin & Other Tales (Mignola)
15. Y: The Last Man (Vaughan)
16. League of Extraordinary Gentleman (Moore)
17. Uzumaki (Ito)
18. Sleeper (Brubaker)

Very contemporary/superhero-centric, but hey, that's how I roll. I wish I had ranked Q&C higher in retrospect, I didn't think it would need that much help for some reason. On the other hand, I'm very gratified by Top 10's relatively high placing.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Krazy Kat (Herriman)

20. St Swithins Day (Morrison/Grist)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine I would have to reconstruct from the excel spreadsheet. ABC Warriors was #1, Tintin about 4 or 5, Watchmen about 10, Little Nemo the only newspaper strip I think.

I will run the 2004 poll if people want. It'll just be a straight 'send in your top 10' though, none of this fancy stuff.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

If we do a 2004 poll, should it wait until ... what, mid-year 2005? ... to allow for Collection Lag, so people who don't read monthly issues can still vote for things that originally came out this year? Or is that just wonky?

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Certainly after the end of the year, but January should be OK I think - I don't know that there are that many full-on wait-for-the-trade people voting on ILC.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That works for me, all of my "wait for the trade" titles (Queen & Country, Daredevil, Sleeper) had trades out during 2004 anyway, even if I'm not completely caught up on the stories.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Love And Rockets (Los Bros Hernandez)
2. Beryl The Peril - Law Run (David Law)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone who voted for Uncle Scrooge put him at about the same point in their ballots -- weird.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

quite hard to complete a full 20 cz
i. my 2000AD memorybanks are poor - i have boxes full of'em ("mint" haha) but haven't reread for far too long (halo jones gets a WAY unfair boost here: i have it in book form and reread it a coupla nights ago)
ii. my superhero knowledge is way weaker than my interest in same
iii. i wasn't contributing to the finetuning and might have allowed myself leeway to find things to vote for other than dark knight and yummy fur (which i like but didn't oughta get onto this list i don't think)

jaka's story does duty for cerebus as a "whole" (ie from very start up to halfway through jaka's story when i started to flag)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

leeeeeway

12. Yummy Fur (Brown)

17. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (Miller)
18. Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD (Steranko)
19. Master Race (Krigstein/Feldstein)
20. Jimmy Corrigan (Ware)

The only change I'd make from Nov. 5th, when I voted, would be to bump Nick Fury and put the Fourth World in its place, and to trade places between Maus (16) and Jimmy Corrigan (20).

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 28 November 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

leeeeeway

This is how my legal name is pronounced.

I also wished I put Q&C up higher. I am quite surprised, though, that Cages missed out.

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 November 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

My ballot, beset with oodles of arbitrary placement (& a healthy "eff you" attitude to canonical capitulation):

Stuff I should have voted for, in hindsight: INSERT ANSWER HERE

Krazy Kat, of course!

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Monday, 29 November 2004 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

If I had voted, things would have been different. Not that different, but maybe a little more superhero-friendly. I think that I (without getting too egomaniacal here) singlehandedly make it look like ILX is more cape-centric than it actually is, because I sometimes go on severe work-avoidance posting sprees, or start a third thread about Hal Jordnan's new haircut or something.
The poll list was damn fascinating to read though, and I learned a bunch. Thanks.
I'll definitely vote in the 2004 poll (will the Flash take number one?) (naw, New Frontier all the way)

Huk-L, Monday, 29 November 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I predict Seaguy for #1 in 2004, with New Frontier close behind and She-Hulk in there somewhere.

We should find links to now-past solicitations to jog memories, if possible.

H (Heruy), Monday, 29 November 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What I voted for that didn't get in:

Captain Britain - I'm not very surprised, it does spend a little too long cleaning up the previous dog's dinner of continuity. The main thing that it does well is THE FURY, the unstoppable superhero-killing machine which was terrifying even in absentia. The other thing it does well is the Special Executive, which would be a generic superhero-mercenary team (though this is maybe the genus of them?) if it weren't for the sheer skill that Moore uses to make all the characters at least 2d in the three or four mini-issues that they appear in.

A Life Force - I'm a little surprised at this, though when I went to summarise I realised I'd merged bits of it with Dropsie Avenue. Will Eisner does the opposite to Moore - because they're "real" people, he can use visual and verbal shorthand to caricature them, and so tell a sprawling story in a short form.

Bad Company - U R ALL FULES! BAD COMPANY rOxOrS!

Nope. I'm using Hot[crap]mail and it doesn't save sent mail until you check the little box. And even then it only keeps it for 30 days.

I've got to make the switch to gmail but I'm too lazy and fear change.

Below is my ballot. I gave Tom the option of not counting it (although I guess he did since he used my overly critical Dr. Strange comment) as I am woefully ignorant about the last twenty years of comics. But this wonderful poll has given me a lot of places to start becoming less woeful. Thanks, everybody.

1. Krazy Kat (Herriman)
2. Peanuts - 1960s (Schulz)
3. Pogo (Kelly)
4. Fantastic Four - Lee/Kirby Run (Lee/Kirby)
