The Venture Brothers: RFD

Half-hour Adult Swim toon. 4/5ths Johnny Quest, (characters / tone / groovy soundtrack by FOETUS) w/ loads of other things added to taste (Scooby-Doo, Marvel Comics, etc etc). If Harvey Birdman was less about the frenetic multi-gag pomo Hanna-Barbera reimagineering (which I love) & more about the satisfying narrative push & maintaining its goofball continuity, and treated their characters w/ a tad more respect, it'd be The Venture Brothers.

I bring this show up here because A) the two Venture kids wear Spider-Man & Aquaman jammies, B) the Venture's neighbor is the best Dr. Strange piss-take / homage you could ever hope for, and C) one episode riffed on the FF. Also, D) - as Brak would say, IT'S FRIKKIN' AWESOME!

Don't forget Dr. Venture's Dr. Doom-like nemesis! As much as I love the other Adult Swim shows, this one is my favorite.

I haven't seen this one yet, but it sounds like something I'd like, that's for damn sure. I'm almost done with this class nonsense, soon I'll be able to stay up late enough to watch it.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I started this thread because of some woefully wrong-headed review of the show I found on the PopMatters site while Googling for Official VB Website info last night. I only skimmed it, but I caught the word "puerile" and "childish" spit out a few times, which is and isn't true. Last night's episode (current broadcast schedule, EST: MTuW 12 AM, Sat 11:30 PM) involved testicular torsion & fish that will swim up your urethra, so, yeah, bait & tackle jokes abound, but they're offered with restraint and respect for the viewing audience, so it's not just a stream of one-note "hey! look! balls!" gags. Well, maybe they're one-note, but they're buffered with enough highbrow falutin' and plot stuff that the note doesn't sour. The fact that the voice acting (including Patrick Warburton!) is fantastic is a definite plus, too.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Puerile and childish are words you can hurl at any Adult Swim show, but no, I don't think they really fit (except that weird Yogi Bear one-off maybe). Harvey Birdman's got its share of stuff like that, but damn, it's my favorite not-an-hour-long show around.

I'll try to remember to catch Saturday's, SNL has been shit this year.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The Venture Garage Sale is one of the greatest things I've seen on Adult Swim.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

It really is 1000 times better than anything SNL has done in a long time, that's for sure.

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I honestly don't know why I still watch it. I don't think I've really loved it since Phil Hartman was still on -- I guess it's Tina Fey on Weekend Update that has me holding out hope.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The best things on SNL right now are Weekend Update and the Debbie Downer sketches.

Did anyone catch the Venture Brothers xmas special?

Leon the Fratboy (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Dry-humping demons w/ papooses = teh siht. Never mind the story within a story within a story. I am a sucker for gratuitous guest appearances, too - last night, Adult Swim rebroadcast the super-villain team-up episode of ATHF!!! Wasp / brownie killer clones = teh swankier siht.

Those Cartoon Network bastards better re-up for a 2nd VB season.

Venture Bros co-creator Jackson Publick is with show-related blog. Check it out!

OMG that was brilliant! The entire opening sequence had me in hysterics.

HEADS UP FANBORGS! From VB co-creator Jackson Publick:

Late breaking news I didn't mention last time because I didn't have the details yet...

Adult Swim has decided to give our little Venture Bros. television programme an experimental whirl at 11pm Sundays starting this Sunday. As far as I know it's only for four weeks--long enough to show "Ice Station--Impossible!," "Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean," "The Trial of the Monarch," and "Return to Spider-Skull Island."

What's especially exciting about this is that, through whatever deal AS has going with them vis-a-vis Family Guy, FOX will be airing commercials for The Venture Bros.--thereby exposing them a Big-Ass prime time network audience--during Family Guy for the next three Sundays.

Pretty cool for us.

"Return to Spider-Skull Island", BTW, is the season finale.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 January 2005 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait wait, there's new Family Guy?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 13 January 2005 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

FOCUS!

(Yes, there's new Family Guy.)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 January 2005 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(There's also a new show by Family Guy creator and creative crew: American Dad, iir the title c, paranoid CIA agent Dad overprotects his family.)

Yay for Venture Brothers, but most of those Sundays are ones where I won't be home!

His name can't really be Jackson Publick, can it?

So I see now the Mors Sphylitica bunch has something to do with this show. Heheh. I R intrigued.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 January 2005 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

You would have liked the albino with the Phil Oakey haircut trying to pick up the teenage goth girl by telling her he was the first person at his college radio station to play Bauhaus!

Woot! Bill Sienkiewicz art from the upcoming Season 1 DVD!

Also, there are screen shots from SEASON TWO on Jackson Publick's blog.

I've now watched both seasons of this on DVD. FUCK YES. The Monarch is my favorite villain ever, with Dr. Girlfriend right behind.

"He's straight." "But he was in Depeche Mode!" "Straight." "Depeche Mode!"

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 12 September 2007 07:12 (eighteen years ago)

yessssssssss

I am hoping for more HANKBATMAN in S3. I also hope he and/or Dean scores.

David R., Wednesday, 12 September 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

The galactic inquisitor/doomsday device ep slays me every fucking time I rewatch it.

"IGNORE ME!"

John Justen, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

I want to make gross, sticky love to this show.

Publick's got season three stuff up at his LJ, btw.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 13 September 2007 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

For some reason the single VB line that's stuck in my head more than any other is from the pilot, when the Monarch is loading up his fake meteorite: "And when he drills open the cosmic mystery, he'll get a face full of MEN! MY men!"

Telephone thing, Friday, 14 September 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Also, "Face Full of MEN": great band name or greatest band name?

Supposedly, the BS DVD art from the S1 box is now available in poster-size -- perfect for your wood-paneled rumpus room!

I've definitely been digging this season, but is anyone else legitimately creeped out by all the crazy flashbacks involving Jonas Venture and company? It seems to get weirder every episode.

Nhex, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 04:31 (seventeen years ago)

The Rusty / JV flashbacks have always been creepy! I'm waiting for a Blue Velvet homage w/ Jonas huffing some helium while shrieking, "Daddy wants cold fusion!"

S3 has been OK+, tho the pop-cult referentialism gets a little tedious (cf. that whole schtick about not saying Ant-Man last week). And I really wish the Order of the Triad was more Defendersy & not just 70s-Marvelsy.

RETURN OF HANK BATMAN PLEASE
