Superheroes and music

actually inspired by this thread on ILE What kind of music do you think Batman likes?

so what do these superheroes listen to?

Dr. Doom - classical all the way (modern - mebbe Steve Reich?)
I think Peter Parker is an indie music guy
Scarlet Witch we know is into jazz and tradiational music from home

but what abt all the others?

yer thots here

H (Heruy), Thursday, 2 December 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I can definitely see Dr Doom looking out upon his kingdom from some tower in Castle Doom, with Wagner booming out of a space age sound system.

And Peter's definitely indie. He would have become a music geek in high school if he'd had time, but with no time for shows or record stores, his tastes and collection ended up really eclectic. He's probably constantly discovering bands for the first time and asking Mary Jane, "Have you ever listened to these 'REM' guys?"

Not sure about the Hulk, but I'll bet Joe Fixit was a Frank, Dean, and Tony fan.

Hal Jordan is on record (in the O'Neil/Adams GL/GA days) as liking Dixieland. His successor, Kyle Rayner, was wearing a NIN shirt when he got his power ring. Whataschmoe.

Huk-L, Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think with the timeline crunch, it would now be Hal Jordan listening to Nine Inch Nails (blasting "Ringfinger" on the road with Ollie), and Kyle would be wearing a Nellie McKay T-shirt.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 2 December 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Early 70s, Ross Andru era (Killer Conway script? not sure): Peter is enthusing to Mary Jane about a great new Ella Fitzgerald record he just bought. Mary Jane is incredulous.

I Am Curious (George) (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 2 December 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete stole Steve Rogers' LP!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 December 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Mid 80-s, Roger Stern era (Frank Miller pencils maybe?): Spider-Man sings an Elvis Costello song as he web-slings.

The Yellow Kid, Thursday, 2 December 2004 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Daredevil: pass

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 2 December 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Penny Century likes L.A. punk! (ducks)

J (Jay), Thursday, 2 December 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as ILC goes (on ILE it would be different, because they don't understand superheroes like we do), Batman doesn't listen to music. He's too much of a hardass to indulge in something pleasurable like that.

Huk-L, Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hrm. Noise."

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

HOWEVER, as a young teen he studied with piano virtuosos in Europe and could be the finest composer since Mozart, but he only studied so that he could learn enough music theory to be prepared for theme villains, and he hasn't tickled the ivories since. This all comes to light in SING A SONG OF SIXPENCE, a sixteen-issue Loeb/Sale storyline about the Penguin, the Riddler, and the mysterious new villain SHHHH, who OMG WTF turns out to be Batman's TOTALLY BEST FRIEND FROM PIANO LESSONS who's tone deaf and has devoted his life to the science of acoustics and heretical Basque mysticism that makes him one with sound.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Is SHHHHH's henchman named G-CLEF?

"Hrm. Piano forte."

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 December 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

SHHHH has a small army of henchmen who look like run of the mill henchmen in nondescript jumpsuits except that their heads are giant stylized music notes. Robin gets all weirded out by it, but Batman's just like, "Hrm. I've seen this before." And then we jump to the flashback, where his piano teacher was killed by noteheads in Prague thirteen years ago, the month before he became Batman.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

... and SHHH's girlfriend is a singer who can SHATTER GLASS WITH HER WARBLING under the nom-de-villian Cacaphony. Hmmm, and at the same time as Batman battles SHHH, Bruce Wayne falls for a sultry night club chanteuse - could they, in fact, be one and the same person. eh? eh?

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

(I bet Gambit out of the X-Man likes Shania Twain)

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I see SHHHHH wearing an ensemble similar to the main villain in Ninja Gaiden (the super-terrific XBox version), complete w/ tri-corner hat & cow-catcher grill, BUT with a baton! Lots of scenes w/ sheet music scattered in the air. Cathedrals. Phantom of the Opera homages. Lots of chandeliers & ballroom dancing.

Hell, you take away all the bits that scream, "Oh Jesus Christ, WTF was 'Hush'?", this could be wicked! (Gerhard on the backgrounds!)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

(if I don't see Gambit getting down to popped-out zydeco sometime in the next 6 months, I'll stop eating jumbalaya 4evah)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

At the end, Cacophony has to save Batman somehow, or sacrifice herself, or show signs of being good at heart etc -- just before she gets impaled on SHHHH's baton!

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"She may not be fat, but this lady's definitely sang."

"How right you are, chum, how. right. you. are."

Huk-L, Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Dario Argento's awaiting a treatment, folx.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yes, she obv has to die at the end to give Batman more angst.

SHHH also has little shuriken that are shaped like musical notes, yet are surprisingly aerodynamic.

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

You open with scenes of the ballroom dancing intercut with Bruce-and-SHHHH's classmate (now a piano genius preparing for big concert) BEING intercut. Like, with a knife. To death.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I eagerly await the loving Moog stabs from Goblin.

Can we start working on the Captain America Big Band love story now?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It is WW2 - Captain America arrives on the frontline in the eastern european kingdom of Fauxeuropovia to help some weary American soldiers who are pinned down by Red Skull's crack troops - also pinned down are a USO entertainment troop led by three foxy Betty Grable a like singers, wholesome american girls - OR ARE THEY???

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine this could also be a WWII-era No Way Out, where Bucky turns out to be a Nazi. Rita Hayworth lookalikes are U&K. Also, we need a FIVE MINUTE scene involving Gene Krupa.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 December 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'm 'In The Mood'...for smashing Krauts!"

Cap lurrrves the Elvis! "It's like music of the future - today! Only not uncomfortably in the future, like all of this crazy 'beatnik' stuff my fellow Avengers like!"
Spidey likes Goldie Lookin Chain.

Re-reading this thread reminds me of the ENORMOUS controversy on Usenet when the rumour went round that some Green Lantern flashback issue or something was going to reveal that Kyle Rayner was ON ECSTASY when he got his power ring. Or his girlfriend was. Or something. I can't remember what they did reveal. Maybe I dreamed it!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

!! That would have to lead to the Fingers of all Fingers in the next GL/GA teamup.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like to think Cliff Steele's into Magma & Ruins & Lightning Bolt & stuff like that, & pipes that stuff while beating up Scissormen & Mr. Nobody & The Chief.

Everyone on the Teen Titans listens to Daniel Powter ALL THE TIME.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

Aunt May & Jarvis like to spend their quality time alone, relaxing to the Doors' "Riders on the Storm" - Jim Morrison's fat-man voice does a certain something to Mizzzz Parker.
