Ew, streaking Martians.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 December 2004 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Although he is the heart of the Justice League, no one in the universe is more alone than J'onn J'onzz

Sad.

Chrchuckis Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 27 December 2004 15:38 (twenty years ago)

BTW, who is Shemp?

Chrchuckis Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 27 December 2004 15:39 (twenty years ago)

I think I liked J'onn best as the JLA's recruiter/frightener of middle-school bullies in Animal Man.

Did he ever have a solo book?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 December 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago)

J'onn J'onzz got some props in Patton Oswalt's pretty good JLA: Welcome to the Working Week last year, something about how Superman is Elvis and MM is Dylan (though, um, no).

xpost,

He's had a few since the late 80s. He was awesome in DC: New Frontier as a soft-boiled cop (to Slam Bradley's h-b). I'd love to see more period Martian Manhunter stuff like that, sorta Sci-Fi Noir.

Huk-L, Monday, 27 December 2004 15:48 (twenty years ago)

If Superman is Elvis, Martian Manhunter is, um, Johnny Cash, maybe?

Huk-L, Monday, 27 December 2004 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Shemp is the Forgotten Stooge.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 27 December 2004 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Wonder Woman: Joan Baez
Flash (Barry): Bobby Darin
Green Lantern (Hal): Pat Boone
Hawkman: Barry Sadler
Zan, Jayna, & Gleek: Peter, Paul & Mary

BONUS!
Deadman: Screaming Jay Hawkins

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 27 December 2004 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Isn't the thing about the Martian Manhunter that although he gets no respect, he could basically wipe the floor with all the JLA members that don't rhyme with Booperman? Unless they were on fire.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago)

The real thing about MM - he's a Conehead. From France.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 December 2004 22:40 (twenty years ago)

He's an old favourite of mine. Predictably, I thought Grant handled him well, positioning him right at the heart of the JLA, with Supes and Bats, and making good use of the abilities he has that none of the others do. He's never had a successful title of his own, and he looks alien, which Supes doesn't, so it seems unsurprising that he won't get a movie.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 00:05 (twenty years ago)

He's been handled really well in the cartoon as well. I thought (of course I thought this) that he was done great in the Giffen/DeMatteis League too. With him and Batman (and Black Canary early on, and occasionally Mr. Miracle) acting like they were the only adults around.

OMFG!!!
JLA #119!!!
FUCK FUCK FUCK

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Wha'happen????

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

WHAT WHAT WHAT?

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Dead like Donna Troy!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

MEGA FUCKING SPOILER, btw.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Wow that certainly is SHOCKING. So SHOCKING that it'll surely be twelve whole months before he comes back to life.

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I haven't read it yet, but got spoiled while perusing the Geoff Johns msg bd.
I really, really hope that his death is NOTE FOR NOTE the same as Spock's death in Wrath of Kahn, with Superman as Kirk.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Thanks to this thread title, I keep imagining Samantha Fox as Martian Manhunter with Full Force dressed as the rest of the JLA.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I think I used to have a poster with Samantha Fox wearing a close approximation of Martian Manhunter's "uniform", minus the collared cape.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

If they'd 'killed' him in IC itself I'd have said five years, but in plain old JLA? Watch out for that 'mysterious character' in 52 kids!!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Well, how did they kill him off?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

DID HE GET FIRED?

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Was it lizards?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh for fuck's sake.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 29 September 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

superman killed him! i am hoping that he's not really dead (it's a little vague, no brains splattered cross a floor) and he'll pop up DRAMATICALLY at most opportune moment in infinite crisis

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 29 September 2005 06:23 (twenty years ago)

Well obviously for heroes must be EDGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Thursday, 29 September 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

So really now, what does Didio and/or Johns have against the Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League? It seems like they only ever kill those characters now! Fire and L-Ron better watch out.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 29 September 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Tsk, of course he's not dead - they just show him going "gasp! what's this!" and then the building he's in blows up.

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 29 September 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, those Geoff Johns msg bd ninnies are a bunch of, well, ninnies. There is absolutely no evidence of MM even being scratched. Sorry for echoing their alarmist Chicken Littleisms.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Superman killing would surely be a comparably big deal with JJ dying.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 29 September 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

But it's quite obvious that it's not Superman. It's somebody that the JLA computer would recognize as Superman, yet still J'onn J'onzz can plainly see that it's not Superman. Probably Red Tornado.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 30 September 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

four months pass...
So word is that the FINAL issue of Gotham Knights ends with a blurb for a new Martian Manhunter series by the Gotham Knights crew.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 20 February 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

oh wow

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I've ever read an issue of Gotham Knights (except maybe in a cross-over Batfiesta), is this going to be bad?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not holding out hope for the team that brought back HUSH.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe they'll introduce the Martian Manhusher.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:45 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe Hush's Kryptonite will be Oreo!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

WILL J'Onn get his eyebrows back?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

This is probably a question for the Weights & Measures department, but: has JJ ever gone manhunting?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

Well one of his identities is a cute Brazillian chick so possibly.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 20 February 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

BARRIONUEVO at Comicon.com's The Pulse on his influences for the Martian Manhunter book: It’s odd, but what really influenced me, and I see it now, in terms of design for the book, is “Speed Racer’s big brother”, Racer X.

???

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

furthermore: BARRIONUEVO: As I just said, I didn’t know J'onn J'onnz so well, I just thought the character was another kitsch extraterrestrial, but researching a bit, and reading the script for the preview, I discovered a very interesting character. An entity of HUGE physical power, but what makes him very different from another famous alien, Jonn has another side darker and full of sadness. This completely changes the notion of a character that at the beginning can look like “just a muscled green guy”, and makes him a being of real flesh and bones. That vulnerability he shows is what attracts me to superheroes that are much closer to the common humans. We are much more affected by rejection and indifference than by a chunk of green rock.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

Translation: "I saw in J'Onn J'Onnz the tiniest glimmer of suckage and I want to bring it to the surface"

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Saturday, 25 February 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

Well, judging by the last episode of Justice League Unlimited

**SPOILER ALERT**

[scroll down for rest of message]

As I was saying, judging by the last episode of Justice League Unlimited, that version of J'Onzz got not just love, but a whole family to go with it.

David Simpson (David Simpson), Monday, 27 February 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

I give this new costume less than twelve months. In fact, that gives me an idea for a thread...

Keywords: revenge, knife, granddaughter, demonic-possession, rock-star, eel (Aus, Tuesday, 6 June 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus fucking christ. Was that last image the cover (or a cover)? What the fucking fuck? Seriously. Jesus. That looks fucking retarded.

WHY DOES PRACTICALLY EVERYONE AT DC WANT EVERYTHING THEY DO TO SUCK AND BE LAME???

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Do you guys think that a 5'9", 160 pound adult could fit into a child's Large sized Martian Manhunter costume?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

I think of it as the poster for an action film starring one of Santa's elves.

Richard Baez (Johnny Logic), Wednesday, 7 June 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

I was referring to the Newsarama article, by the way. I wish the image above were the cover. It'd be rad if Martian Manhunter was always drawn very blatantly as a small child wearing a shitty costume.
