But not comics as such...

It could rightly be said that I'm not 100% in sympathy with what the average comics fan might respond to. So I'm interested in some feedback. I'm working on a comics-related Web site at the moment--I can't name it, as it's not 100% definite, though let's say 90%. Broadly speaking, I'm very happy with the design and contents ideas, but let's be speculative.

What kind of things would you like to see on a comics-type Web site? Let's say it was the Web site for a comics magazine, but we should think in terms of dynamic content that won't be seen in print. What would make you come back regularly? What would you find useful or entertaining... or even compelling?

As present the layout, roughly, is: current issue contents, Web preview section, subs info, editorial, reviews, questions & letters, news blog, mailing list, links section, etc. The news blog is my idea; small snippets from several writers posted regularly that won't go into print. There is also some thought of a Web comics section, though not definite.

So let me check your pulse. Tell me what would work for you. I can't promise to use anything--all content would obviously be subject to employer approval in any case--but nothing's ruled out at this point. Thanks in advance!

(Private e-mail replies okay too, BTW.)

All that sounds good, esp. the news blog.

Having a foreign comics correspondant or two would be pretty ace, just to get a sense of what's going on in the better part of the world. :)

I think a sense of community is always worth creating, so a message board is a good idea. Then it's worth offering an archive of worthwhile old articles and interviews, once the mag containing them is no longer on sale.

Archive = GOOD!
Exclusive artwork/rejected pages = GOOD!

...Let me get back to you with other thoughts...

Interview-y tpe things. It would be cool to have a comics version of the "blindfold test"...maybe showing a single panel from a comic and having them give their opinion and try to identify what it's from.

REMIXES

Wow, I'm now imagining a comics site where clicking on exclusive content triggers a sound clip of Missy Elliott shouting "REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEMIX!" You should include an option for that.

only instead of missy have it be solomon grundy!

SCI FI BOOBIES!!

Also, academic-ish articles, more on the critical than theoretic side. (e.g. Sure, the last xyz trade was hot stuff, but what of its depiction of qrs? How does its narrative argle bargle?)

And me (or any other, more worthy ILC denizens) getting paid to write such monstrosities.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 22:48 (twenty years ago)

Hear hear!

(not meaning me mind you, oh no)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 22:56 (twenty years ago)

I could've picked a better random sequential three letter sequence than "qrs."

Thanks. Some good thoughts, and in particular I think the foreign correspondent is a nice idea for the news team. My friend and colleague Mr. Gravett may be of help there.

There is an archive of older material I've been slogging through (no database access = cut & paste! = loadsa fun). No articles, really, but perhaps we can draw some Web-exclusive items from people involved.

Oh, and I guess we squeeze ILC into the links section somewhere. :-)

I'd like to see a list of comic writers/artists- and if you click on their name you see all the work they've done AND upcoming work. Like, "On the radar" or something.

I only mention this because I recently read Jack Lawrence's Darkham Vale and, through visiting his website, found out that he's doing the artwork for a 4-part series starting this month from Image called Lions, Tigers & Bears. So... having ONE place to go to, to read about upcoming stuff (instead of going to a million different websites) would be really handy.
