For the last month I've been drooling over The Spirit Archives (thanks to my local library the first 13 Volumes) and they're really genius.

That sucks. A Life Force is one of my favourite books ever, and Dropsie Avenue's scope and depth is astonishing. The depth moreso: he was a fantastic cartoonist, knowing how much of a character needed fleshing out, and how much can be read from a few drawn lines.

Yeah, he was a great cartoonist, and consistently interesting. I met him and talked to him for a couple of hours, years ago, and he was extraordinarily enthusiastic about the medium, for a pretty old guy.

87 years is not bad, but it's still sad. Sometimes it felt like the guy was gonna live forever, watching over comicdom like some benevolent god.

I'm sorry guys, I'm not very familiar with his work, but I just assumed he was already dead because he has an award named after him!

So so so fucking awesome:
Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries have just posted full copies (145 regular issues; 5 special issues and 14 index issues) of the Army publication 'Preventative Maintenance Monthly', illustrated by Will Eisner and covering the years 1951 to 1972.
