he's six on saturday. because he's into dinosaurs i gave him my "xenozoic tales" 1-11 a while ago. but its missing no.2. plus i gave him a couple of other things.

we went to THE CITY yesterday and we dropped into a little second hand (music, books, a few comics) place. he was excited cos he thought he might find no.2.

no luck.

so he decided (why...i dunno) he was gonna collect marvel comics ROM. i know nothing of this title. he saw some issues and spent the next 1/2 hour on the floor looking through piles of CRAP comics.

i bought him a bunch that he found.

am i leading him into foolishness?

The best thing you can do is let him find his own way to the good stuff. Plus, if you're 6, ROM probably is cool.

THe new Spider-Man/Human Torch mini-series is pretty kid friendly. #1 came out last week, and it seems to gel with the Spider-Man from the 60s cartoon, which is a lot of fun.

Is it the Steve Ditko ROM? That's surely a door to old DR STRANGE/SPIDEY goodness.

Alternatively, and impossible-quest-ly, find that ancient UK ROM toy advert drawn by Ron Smith, featuring first use of "I don't know... I just don't know" in a toy advert. Then lead him slowly towards other delicious RON SMITH action, like King Cobra or the best of Judge Dredd. (A 1000% more impossible task than finding Steve Ditko but 1000% more rewarding as Ron Smith is the John Cleese of comics artists.)

Steve Ditko or Ron Smith. That's about all I can think of that's good about ROM.

it is NOT the ditko. pretty sure. 80's. he's stashed them away somewhere. there's a bunch of old 2000ads in my backwater second hand bookshop. i wonder if ronsmiths there? huk i aint buying him new comics yet...

Yeah, I understand completely.
When I was a kid, my dad used to take me with him to this used bookstore where he would be crime novels by the pound, and they had a whole wall's length of used comic bins that I would pore over and come away with a $5 stack of awesome adventures!

If the 2000ADs in question are made of cheap newspaper instead of glossy cover nonsense, grab 'em as they're bound to be worth it. And Ron Smith is more likely to be there.
