OK, this LOOKS to be a "slow" week (see for yourself), but that's not stopping Mar-vell from shipping 5 X titles & 3 Spidey books (4 if you want to include Black Widow in the arachnid cavalcade) (don't tell DD).

Also: PLANETARY! And, hey, it's that Blankets GN I've heard so much about - isn't it supposed to be good or something?

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 23 January 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

After reading Titans, Wonder Woman, and Rucka's Superman this week, I'm thinking of adding some more DC stuff to my pull list (I like Rucka's WW and Superman more than his Bat-stuff! /blasphemy), but nothing this week jumps out at me except Flash and FF.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 23 January 2005 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Not so slow for me - this is the first week in a while where I'm buying more than one title. Well, two IS more than one, anyway.

I'm getting Legion #2 and the new FF. A week of Waid.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Sunday, 23 January 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

if "cryptozoo crew" is some hi-concept revisioning of captain carrott done up sneakers style count me in on that

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 23 January 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Plantery, yay! Aren't there only a couple more issues after this?

Also, reading Joe Quesada's hype column in last month's Marvel books was hilarious. He's all about the self-fulfilling prophecy. "And next month, BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT, the debut solo book of the WILDLY POPULAR mutant X-23! Straight from the pages of the SMASH HIT NYX!"

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 23 January 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Smash hit = we published two issues last year and we're not cancelled yet.

Hang on, NYX is written by Joe Quesada!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 23 January 2005 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm really liking Sleeper... it's basically about a double agent who's gotten in so deep that he no longer really knows what side he's on, except the sides are the superheroes and the supervillains.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 24 January 2005 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

FLASH #218
HELLBLAZER #204
LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #2
LOSERS #20
PLANETARY #22
FANTASTIC FOUR #522
ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #15

Wow. That's a super-light week. I might pick up that trade I was looking at last week now (although in classic style, I can't remember what it was other than thinking "I'll leave that for another week")

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 24 January 2005 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I am thinking (about Sleeper) that we know Brubaker is really good at setting up webs of distrust, and foreshadowing a great closer, but all that is really easy compared to actually having a great closer.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 24 January 2005 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Dang. I'm glad I didn't go last week, now I'll have the two from last week and the two from this week. Whatever they are.

Huk-L, Monday, 24 January 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Planetary ending at #24?

Daniel Cheung (fataltapper), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

#25 is the final issue, I think.

aldo, how is Hellblazer going? I find myself becoming more an admirer of Mike Carey's writing than a fan - I'm still getting Lucifer, but the underlying story's not sticking w/ me, and Hellblazer just wasn't grabbing me, either.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"TAROT WITCH OF THE BLACK ROSE DLX ED #30 (MR) $19.99"

I have never heard of this before this very moment, but a willing to bet money it is fucking awful.

Austin (Austin), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Hellblazer has been distinctly meh, probably since the days of Brian Azarrello (who all the Hellblazer fanboys hated). I only buy it for Frances, ditto for Lucifer really. The anniversary issue was quite good, and featured an excellent central idea that I thought Mike Carey could have spun-out for a decent 12 part arc, but apart from that... I also hate the artwork at the moment, and frequently can't distinguish somebody who was a major part in the previous issue from someone who has just been introduced.

In other words, if you're not buying it then don't, until I give you the all-clear.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

TAR0T W!TCH OF THE BLACK ROSE DLX ED #30 (MR) $19.99

That'd be J!m B@l3nt's big-boobed mystical comic thingy. We are talking bodacious ta-tas the size of wedding cakes bounding about in bikini tops about 10 sizes too small. I'm assuming the same things as you, Austin, but who knows what hides behind the mondo-sized breasts of witchy women?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Besides "more breast".

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I figured it was either a goth jiggle book or a goth book for depressed and alienated 14 year old Tori Amos fans (more likely the former with the dlx ed 19.99 stuff)

I just couldn't decide which was less appealing.

Austin (Austin), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite like a lot of the Mike Carey Hellblazer, though I may be reaching my lifetime limit for "how can John talk his way out of this tricky situation with only his Liverpudlian quick wits and some misdirection?"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 24 January 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm so amazed that Constantine has held a title as long as he has. Really, only Wonder Woman, Superman and the Flash (at DC at least) have gone 200 issues in the modern era (though Legends of the Dark Knight must be close too, and Green Lantern--well, fuck Green Lantern, as least as far as this discussion goes). I read it up to about #50, and honestly, I sort of gave up because Constantine really felt like a hollow character (as opposed to the bounteous tapestry that is Superman). Maybe that's why he's been able to last so long, because he's just vague enough that writers have room to stretch with him. But like, he knows everything, and he's a smart-arse. How has this managed to sustain itself for 200+ issues?

Huk-L, Monday, 24 January 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It is remarkable. I don't think I've read it since 50-ish either, maybe some of the later Ennis. Anglophilia?

I read an interview with Mike Carey which has really put me off reading anything by him at all - his basic line was "Yes, my mission in this world is to provide detailed monthly marginalia upon the offerings of the Great Neil". Though I suppose that kind of fill-in-the-blanks mentality is hardly unique to him.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 24 January 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you misread him. People who don't read Lucifer keep acting like it's just written between the lines of Sandman; it's a Sandman spin-off the way Good Times was a Maude spin-off.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 24 January 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(The other stuff was, I suspect, more a matter of "if you want to pitch a miniseries for Vertigo and aren't a brand name, your best bet is to use the existing setting material, most of which is Sandman, just as much as your best bet with Marvel would be to propose something involving superheroes.")

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 24 January 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I read Hellblazer as long as whatsisname was drawing it. Shit, I can't think of his name now and he was really fucking badass...

(google search)

Sean Phillips! As for the writing, well, I think it was pretty good under Jenkins and Ennis. I haven't looked at the book in ages, though. Constantine seems to be a pretty handy way to describe political events through a metaphor of supernatural whackadoodle. You know: politics, uh, I mean magic, is this permeating yet invisible force in all our lives. You can affect it somewhat if you have some specialized knowledge, but there's almost always someone out there with tons more juice than you've got who's jerking your strings to make you dance, and often as not you don't even know who that is! etc. Hellblazer is the fantasy that there's more than just the illusion of free will in the face of this scary mysterious force - if you're savvy enough, you can duck it entirely. But by neccesity that means being somewhat alienated from the rest of society.

Austin (Austin), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Constantine works best in the long term when he's basically a Cryptkeeper/Elvira/Abel & Cain/Rod Serling figure, standing on the periphery of the story. Every now and then it's good for him to get involved, but for such a miserable git of a character, he sure redeems himself a lot, which sort of dampens the impact of needing to be redeemed.
I loved the Lung Cancer storyline, but had a hard time reading past that (though I did for another year or something). I think the Vampire King story (was that #50?) sort of turned it off for me. Like, sure, Batman and Superman can never be allowed closure or true character growth, but they're mythic icons, so that's okay. Constantine, on the other hand...he's just bloke, innit?

Huk-L, Monday, 24 January 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The interview's in a book called something like 'Writers on Comics Writing', Vol.2 - published by Titan over here. Al owns the copy that I read. Most of the interviews were quite interesting, actually - but Carey's was particularly striking, not knowing anything about him or Lucifer beforehand. He may well have overplayed his links to Gaiman and his work himself, though, out of modesty.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Or to help sales, maybe -- I think if Lucifer had guest appearances by Barnabas the Talking Dog and Death, it would sell a lot better. His only Sandman-related stuff I can think of uses stuff-Gaiman-got-from-myth, and focuses on the original source material over the Gaiman takes. You can read the whole of Lucifer without having ever heard of Sandman, and not miss anything -- the fact that he's given up running Hell is important, and some minor characters show up, but it's (for better, for worse, whichever) much more of a Machiavellian and Miltonian Lucifer than Gaiman's guy who quits and goes to the beach.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

One major character (Mazikeen) is from Sandman, but you don't really have to know more than "camp follower". She's given a makeover almost immediately.

I'm surprised that Hellblazer has made it to 200 with so many writers having long runs on him. He'd be perfect for Judge Dredd-type stories where something exciting happens every week and in the end nothing changes, but so much actual continuity is dizzying. Although part of the secret might be Paul Jenkins run, which spent ages tying up old plot threads in a masterful fashion (if you like that sort of thing) and then it turned out that he didn't have anything very impressive to say for himself.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man--the last issue of We3 came out! And the last issue of Luba! End of TWO eras!

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Crap, I'm not sure I have We3 on the pull list, and I'm not gonna make it to the store until mid-Feb.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I HAD We3 on my pull list! And it wasn't there when I went yesterday! Yeesh.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It's goooood.

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of Morrison, does anyone know if the Seven Soldiers series are all going to have the same trade dress? i.e. if I put "Seven Soldiers" on my pull list, will they remember to put all the series in? The guy who does the pulling doesn't work the register, and seems to go purely by title ("everything Morrison" didn't work).

Morrison stuff always sells out here by the next week, I may see about finding a store in Louisiana.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 27 January 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Tep, your bestest bet might be to go the interweb mailorder route, which is what I'm contemplating (again). My main reason for not having done this already = I'll miss the routine & romanticism of going to the store on New Arrival Day & getting my stash out of my wee little slot. Getting stuff in the mail obviously wouldn't be the same.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's a good plan, though -- where's the best place to order new issues these days? Mile High?

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Otherwise I'm totally gonna be sitting there at the Mardi Gras parades going, "Well damn, how're the killer animals going to get out of this fix? If only the store had my We3!"

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine Mile High is a safe bet. I was actually looking @ Midtown Comics, as they're closer to me (NYC --> CT = less wait time!) and their site's easy to navigate (unlike some other online subscription-offering retail sites I've tried to spelunk).

I think Leeeee started a thread about this stuff way way back.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Legion of Superheros

yay, this was really good fun. Lots of dorky science fiction wackiness and fite action (though I don't like the sound of the big war coming up. zzzz). Brainiac 5 and Dream Girl are the main characters and Dream Girl is really well written and not a ditzy slut with deus ex machina powers like she always was back in the day.

Flash

Filler with Heatwave trying to catch Murmer. You'd think that man with flame thrower vs gimp with knife would be quite a mismatch but no, Murmer uses his superhuman weaselling away powers again. Nice art though.

I am v lucky as their a comic shop between home and work and about three others a short bus ride away.

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 27 January 2005 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Not too long ago: Online retailers: RFI, S/D, C/D

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Friday, 28 January 2005 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I picked up the first two Legion issues today, and they are really fun. I'm not super crazy about the art, yet Kitson does have a certain Curt Swan quality that I guess I can appreciate. I'm probably hooked on this now.

Flash - Filler, intermission. Yeah, the art was good. I didn't care for how skinny Captain Cold was in this issue though, in his last few appearances he's seemed a little stockier, or at least more substantial. But Johns is making him into my favourite supervillain.

Adventures of Superman - Identity Crisis tie-in. Luthor's back, Superman is cypher for post-9/11 America, with Wonder Woman as Blair's England and Batman as Canada. Okay, that's stretching it. Batman is probably the least likely superhero to ever have anything to do with Canada. They misspelled Rags Morales's name on the cover.

Teen Titans - more IC aftermath. I felt a little uncomfortable reading this, like I'm too old for this bullshit, but there was a Green Arrow cameo, so I felt better. Luthor's back, and Robin continues to struggle to not be like Batman too much.

Daredevil - Fuck, end this story already. Though this was the most enjoyable chapter so far.

JLA Classified - A disappointing conclusion to GM's return to the JLA. There were great moments, but there just seemed to be too many gaps in the narrative. I keep thinking I had turned an extra page (like how did Batman get loose? or was that even Batman on the spit?).

Huk-L, Friday, 28 January 2005 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Almost forgot:

Outsiders - hmmm, curious end to the America's Most Wanted crossover. John Walsh stops short of advocating killing the child abductor, but not by much. As Kyle Baker moves Plastic Man into his own comedy corner of the DCU (where he really belongs), Judd Winick seems to be moving Shift (the Metamorpho skin graft) into the shapechanging yukster of the DCU. Change is good.

Huk-L, Friday, 28 January 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The end of We3 is very bittersweet! Aw.

Also New X-Men is way better than it has any right to be.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 January 2005 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

This was an awesome week. YtLM, We3, Planetary, Sleeper, Powers (or was that last week?), and that second issue of X23. Basically every series I follow came out with a new issue this week.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 28 January 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

And oh shit Losers 20! I don't have that one yet...

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 28 January 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)
