PHYSICS: DENIED!

Yeah, there's probably an archived thread that would be a better place for this, but whatever, it was my birthday yesterday, & this is my present to myself (& you):

ROB LIEFELD'S SHATTERSTAR (drawn by Marat Mychaels) (I kinda miss Brigade right now) (help me)

Look at that first panel. I wish my hip did that. (And I would wish the editors of such books weren't taking siestas or undergoing Lasik treatment whenever this stuff crossed their desk, but I don't want to wish for too much - I'm still waiting on the "world peace" thing.)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:35 (twenty years ago)

And I know the thread title isn't that appropriate, but, c'mon, it's a cool thread title. 2000AD, looky!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:36 (twenty years ago)

HAPPY BIRDTHAY, DAVE!!

And that hip action is some kind of beautiful, I have to admit.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

Maybe that is why the mystic lady is weeping a single perfectly formed tear - imagining the pain involved in dislocating your hip socket and making your leg face the wrong way round, just to kick someone in the head.

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 3 February 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVE!!!

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 3 February 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVE! Did Batman spank you yet?

Huk-L, Thursday, 3 February 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

I have to finish giving this thug a colonoscopy through his pants first.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 3 February 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Who knew Shatterstar was a female porn star?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 3 February 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Who didn't?

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 5 February 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

"I have heard the word anatomy once, long ago, but I do not know what it means. Perhaps Anatomy is a small dictatorial sheikdom. Also, what are 'linear perspective' 'drapery' and 'genitals'?"

Man, I love how the outfit he's wearing is tight enough (and both guys are apparently at 0% body fat) to show every seperate muscle delineated on the body as a hard black line, yet the crotch is completely featurless. And what is up with that wall in panel 3? How high is it? How far back is it? Do the ends curve toward or away from the viewer?

Austin (Austin), Saturday, 5 February 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

I like the symmetry-based commentary on how all religion is the same thing under different guises. I hope it ends with "You know, Zeus, we are in truth just two sides of the same coin".

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Ultimate Jesus Smackdown!!!!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

I have to say that when this thread got revived, I'd forgotten that it was about Liefeld's genius and assumed it was about Lady Death or something.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 31 March 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

But instead, it's actually something so much better.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Thursday, 31 March 2005 02:41 (twenty years ago)

The Jesus/Zeus throwdown is great and all, but d00dz, wot about the story below it???

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

There was something below that?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Can some good peep cut-n-paste the item below the JC throwdown into this thread for those of us that can't view crappily-coded ad-heavy sites @ work?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Liberality, He Wrote

One more Easter item… because it wouldn’t be Easter without some wacky neoconservatives!

And by far, the wackiest thing to come out this week was from this thread on the Byrne Robotics message board (by way of Fanboy Rampage) A man named Mike Mackey, whose goal is to put out the “world’s first conservative comic”, posted a synopsis for his project, Liberality For All:America’s future has become an Orwellian nightmare of ultra-liberalism. Beginning with the Gore Presidency, the government has become increasingly dominated by liberal extremists. In 2004, Muslim terrorists stopped viewing the weakened American government as a threat; instead they set their sites on their true enemies, vocal American conservatives. Terrorist assassins have thinned the ranks of the vocal Right. The few conservatives that survived attempts on their lives have been forced underground by the oppressive 'Coulter Laws' of 2007. In order to further their cause, they have joined forces and formed a powerful covert conservative organization called 'The Freedom of Information League', aka F.O.I.L. The New York City faction of F.O.I.L. is lead by Sean Hannity, G. Gordon Liddy and Oliver North, each uniquely endowed with special abilities devised by a biomechanical engineer affectionately named 'Oscar'. F.O.I.L. is soon to be joined by a young man named Reagan McGee. Reagan was born on September 11th, 2001. Reagan has grown to manhood in an ultra-liberal educational system: being told, not asked, what to think. With personal determination, which alienates him from his contemporaries, he has chosen the path less traveled…the path to the Right. Two decades of negotiation with the U.N., and America’s administration of 2021 (President Chelsea Clinton and Vice President Michael Moore), has culminated in a truce with fundamentalist Islamic terrorists, or so America is told. The honorable ambassador from Afghanistan has come to NYC to address the U.N., his name is Usama Bin Laden. Although, Ambassador Bin Laden has announced that he will publicly apologize for the 'misunderstanding' of the events of 9/11. In actuality, he intends on detonating a tactical nuke that is contained in his private diplomatic briefcase. It is a race against the clock to save NYC from a nuclear holocaust and the world from liberal domination. Only with F.O.I.L.’s help, can 'Liberality For All' once again become 'Liberty For All!'Well… It made me laugh. I’ll give him that.

If Mackey is serious about putting this out (and he insists that he is), then I think I’ve just found my Civilian Justice.

This Has A “F.O.I.L.ed Again” Factor of One Out of Ten

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Bah, ILX's anti-Jon Williams measures have quite fucked parts of that.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

OMG. I had skimmed that via another comic blog, but sweet crap! "Reagan McGee!" And his best friend, Eisenhower Smith!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

"The New York City faction of F.O.I.L. is lead by Sean Hannity, G. Gordon Liddy and Oliver North, each uniquely endowed with special abilities devised by a biomechanical engineer affectionately named 'Oscar'."

This would be the best comic evah!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 31 March 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

OMG and FOIL's nemeses, the Liberal Armada of Mech-Endowed Robo-Sapiens, could employ Oscar's brother, FELIX!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Well, I've been looking for a title to drop from my list. I thought it would JSA, but good grief! That's awful.

Huk-L, Thursday, 28 April 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

OMG

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

What happened to Cyborg?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Liefeld happened. (If you're talking about the gun hand.)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised he doesn't have giant, pointy boobs.

Huk-L, Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

I think it's disgraceful of DC to allow artists to post obvious spoilers. The thrilling plot twists of Cyborg's doubling in height and Kid Flash's strange limb growth have been ruined for me now.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

It's so sad; Liefeld can only draw torsoes, so he spends all of his time drawing one, making it ripple and bulge with all sorts of imaginary muscles only to go "OH SHIT DEADLINE" and slap on some chicken legs and a grunting constipated head on it then copies it all over the page.

It's also quite funny that he can do abs but he can't do breasts.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

I was almost gonna buy this (oh Gail!), but you guys are totally making me give into peer pressure.

What IS the deal w/ Cyborg's gun hand, tho? It's almost as big as Kid Flash!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Are you suggesting that Rob Liefeld has never seen a breast Dan?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

I can say with some certainty that he's seen canteloupe.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

More Liefeld action http://www.newsarama.com/DC/liefeld/LiefeldTitans2.htm

Huk-L, Thursday, 28 April 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Is there any evidence from the last ten years that supports the idea that Rob Liefeld can do anything but hurt the sales and shipping schedule of a series?

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 28 April 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Aw, that's the new DC Way, anyhow.

Huk-L, Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

What the hell?

1) "Hey, I know - I'll draw Robin LEAPING!"
2) The THIRD LMP (Liefeld Mouth Position) has been revealed - it is CLOSED MOUTH
3) Dude says that his X-Force work shows he can deliver on time - yeah, it's real easy WHEN YOU RECYCLE WORK.

I don't know why I'm being such a fucker about this, tho, as I probably will buy it. (SAVE ME.)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Robin's also had his right arm beaten clear out of its socket by the Joker's crowbar.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Dear Rob -

Feet exist.

Love,
Austin

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

When did Robin get genespliced with Toad?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I love the way Rob says, oh yeah, I'm 8 pages in now and I really think I've pretty much worked out how to draw Cyborg.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Yes! "I have every confidence that I will figure out how to draw these characters after the series has finished!"

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 29 April 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Always in the last place you look - funny how that always happens, ain't it?

Say AAAAAAAAARGH! (popshots75`), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Oh for the crap of crap, will someone just tell that blue jean commercial motherfucker that he's sitting around all day drawing naked muscle men who happen to have weirdly-pigmented skin that mimics the patterning of a costume, and maybe he'll freeze up long enough for someone to slam a big glass over him.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Somebody's going to be inking him, though? Right? RIGHT???

(ps, for more hot hot Liefeld action, see the Message Board Post of the Day thread)

Huk-L, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

I can't stand the way he makes people's foreheads wrinkle between their eyes when they're upset. It makes everyone's face look like a badger.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

And yeah I know people's foreheads actually wrinkle in real life, but not like that! not so vertical or something.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

Not to mention, in real life no one would wear a spandex mask so skin-tight that it would actually wrinkle WITH your forehead. (I know Liefeld's not the only one who does this, but he does it blatantly and a lot.) If it weren't for the magical codpieces of superheroland, he'd have a chart reminding him of the number of wrinkles in Wolverine's balls vs Youngblood's balls vs Robin's etc., because his crazy costume physics would demand drawing them.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Noses. That's my core problem I think. He learned how to draw triangles and obviously got distracted for the rest of the lesson.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

The funny thing is: if you saw his first "pro" work (on a 5-issue Hawk and Dove mini-series), it looked pretty good! In hindsight, you can see some of these disquieting tendencies sneaking into the work, but it was A-OK! For the luvva - HE DREW DIFFERENT FACIAL EXPRESSIONS! AND FEET! (Of course, Karl Kesel on inks probably had a whole lot to do w/ that.)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

Toood McFarlane's early stuff on Infinity Inc and Detective was pretty okay. By the time he did this Batman cover (which aside from being a sign of shittier things to come), however, he was clearly headed toward the dark side...
http://www.comics.org/graphics/covers/141/200/141_2_0000423.jpg

Huk-L, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Haha, McFarlane's stuff is like cape porn.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

(Of course, Karl Kesel on inks probably had a whole lot to do w/ that.)

Yeah, Kesel is widely known to have pretty much redrawn the whole series as he went.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 26 May 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahaha - if Kesel had just turfed and did as little as possible, Liefeld's career probably would've gone pffffffft.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

The comment that sums up my feelings: "With the exception of Dove's neck not lining up with her crotch (which it should) in the second preview page......I kind of like 'em. Very full of energy."

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

I would also include Wonder Girl's hella ripped 6-pack in the WTF? file, too.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

I think my impulse to buy this (damn you Ms. Simone!) also belongs in the WTF? file.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

I've got no such impulse. Don't give a crap about H&D, don't give a crap about RL, GS has plenty of decent stuff with decent art. This would be the perfect time to drop Teen Titans. I probably won't, of course, but it's the thought that counts, right?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Can someone explain how Robin made a Batarang teleport through the gun and hit her hand from the opposite side? Oh yeah, it's a Batarang, ergo it hit her on the return trip. But why is the gun falling forward?

Now, #27 had some serious re-order activity, as additional copies popped up the next month adding to the overall total. The drop off to the next month is valid and I will step up and say that it's a result of the first issue not being very good.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

But seriously when you let your best writer, Jeph Loeb, walk away, how serious are you about competing?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Of the TWO COMICS I drew ALL YEAR, even I'll admit one of them wasn't very good. WHY DIDN'T DC PROMOTE THE FUCK OF IT?
