I have D$ve S@m's Fax Number...

Despite being told by comic shop owner A in T*ro*to that D$ve S@m would "literally kill" them if they gave me his number, comic shop owner A in T*ro*to has given me his fax, a la Chester Brown/Louis Riel. I'm hoping to interview him for a local paper I write for. Which brings me to the question: What should I write in the damn fax to persuade him to talk? I stopped reading C*r*b*s around issue #170 (before "Reads" and "Tangents", luckily, so the whole DS is crazy thing passed me by...)

Be nice. He's generally pretty approachable.

But he probably won't talk. He's pretty crazy about his time (not that he's not just pretty crazy in general).

And I have his address.

:)

Now Dave has finished Cerebus, you might find that (praying aside) he has a bit more time than he did before. That said, he might well be starting work on the Latter Days Vol 2 Phonebook so he can do it at a slightly more leisurely pace - plus he's already signed up to do Following Cerebus with the guys at Win-Mill.

As to what to ask him... not having read some of the stuff puts you at a slight disadvantage (had you read it all, I'd suggest a good opening gambit might have been "Why do people who haven't read all of Cerebus have the strongest/most vocal opinions about it?"). I'd buy and read Jaka's Story, Rick's Story, Going Home and Form And Void (possibly Latter Days as well) before tackling Dave. A good question might be "Why is Rick's Story overlooked as the lynchpin book to Cerebus?"

"Because it's not as good as High Society."

Sorry, had to.

I think it's because, at the time, it seemed so insignificant, and still often seems a departure from most of the rest of the series; that the latter (what, third?) of the series relies on it, I think, doesn't mean it's necessarily that much more important than what comes before it.

Also, it signals a switch in the focus of the series, from focusing on parody with occassional psuedo-religious/philosophical rants to religious/philosophical rants with occassional parody.

But then, I just got my copy of Latter Days yesterday (almost done, though), so I can't contribute too great an analysis.

I think you're right, that's exactly why it's the most important book (if we accept the hypothesis that Dave always intended the book to be a deep exploration of religion and gender - started in Church & State) - it does exactly mark the change from a 'funnybook' to 'thoughts of Dave'. It doesn't seem like a big deal when you're reading it, but it permeates all through Going Home and Latter Days.

But then Guys is my favourite book, so what do I know. :-)

"Why do people who haven't read all of Cerebus have the strongest/most vocal opinions about it?"

Perfect! Thanks.

I've been told by others that he's actually a decent guy.

When I was 15 he sent me a Diamondback deck w/ a cute little "Merry Christmas" sketch on it, featuring Cerebus in a Santa Clause hat; the cards hadn't been re-issued yet, and my mom wrote him looking for a set (this was almost ten years ago), and he mailed me one for free.

I also used to shop (up until last April) at Now & Then Books, where Dave used to work, and where he still shops, and though I never ran into him there, all the regulars and staff said he is really a decent guy in person.

Hooray! Interview all set, albeit for as-yet-known date. So this thread now becomes: What questions would you like to ask Dave Sim?
