And hopefully the shop will have managed to get the Bizarro h/c this week.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my shop has it. The jerks. It's like $50 Canadian.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine just didn't think anybody would want it. They didn't count on my stupidity.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's sort of...it's, um, like a fancy version of Mad almost? I mean, I don't think I'd ever buy a new Mad hardcover...I really want this too, but I have to show strength and wait for the trade pprbck.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

My strength comes by virtue of having no money.

Aldo, I'm surprised you don't have Captain America on your list - what gives?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, what I'll be buying:

GOTHAM CENTRAL #28 - holy shit, are we at #28 already! oh well, DEAD COMIC WALKING!
GREEN ARROW #47 - the Duke of Oil! Arsenal! Grooming tips!
JSA #70 - how on earth can a time travel story written by Geoff Johns be so boring?
NIGHTWING #103 - Nightwing, meet Deadman; Deadman, Nightwing.
OUTSIDERS #20 - Arsenal! Nightwing! Grooming tips!

xpost

So I guess Captain America is good or something, huh? If anyone wants to sell me on it, I'm receptive right now (ovulating).

Huk-L, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only read the 1st issue (DAMN YOU NAMELESS COMIC SHOP!), but 1) it's by yr boy Brubaker, 2) it features great artwork from Steve Epting (Epting = if Greg Land was less stilted & shiny), 3) starting w/ #2, Michael Lark is also in the book (drawing flashback sequences), and 4) it seems to strike a nice balance between the po-faced political heavy-handedness of recent vintage (cf. the ill-fated Reiber / Cassaday revamp), the gritty espionage shenanigans of mid-60s Cap (epitomized by the Steranko HYRDA run), and the Marvelous cosmic multicolored splendor that most folks expect from a funny book (cf. Kirby & the Cosmic Cube, Mark Gruenwald & just about every damn story he wrote, Robert Kirkman's brief reprise last year).

Also, SOMEONE DIES (and is still dead, according to the previews I've seen)! And yr boy Brubaker is the writer.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Of all of that, the only words that mean anything to me are "yr boy Brubaker".
I know nothing of Captain America. And not being American, I don't really have a problem with that.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I figgered as much. At any rate, reading this version of Captain America won't make you feel inferior for not coming from the land of Liberty and Freedom and All Things Fattening. There's a 6-page preview of the newest CA issue @ MileHighComics.com in the previews area (if you click on the ADVANCE MARVEL PREVIEWS link @ the top of the main previews page).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I struggled through the last relaunch while John Cassady was doing the art, but didn't even make it to the end of that. I find him kinda stomach-churning, not being American, and too much of the rhetoric comes off like a muscly Robert Kilroy-Silk analogue for me to take seriously.

Also, I suspect I don't quite feel the love for Yer Man Brubaker as much as the rest of you do.

I'll look at the preview though - but it'll have to go some way to top the Marvel Heroes Coach The Ryder Cup Team! preview about halfway down this week's LitG...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I just...Captain America...I don't see...me and him, him and I...different worlds...

Huk-L, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, those preview pages were pretty good (although I didn't go for the flashbacks at all), I might pick up the first trade when it comes out.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. I really liked the art. I just...the War of 1812...for nothing!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean it's not as good as Hulk #78 now, is it? (Hah! Despite having read the preview I still feel drawn to buying it to keep the run intact. I am sad and anal.)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I consider it more a statement of support when I buy the issue after reading the full-length preview. It really worked out for Warlock, lemme tell you!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a preview of GL: Rebirth up at Geoffjohns.com!
It's taking forever to load...it must be AWESOME.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

GUH! Still loading, wtf?
Anyway, there's JLA: Classified preview up at Popcultureshock.com too. It's classic Giffen layouts and DeMatteis running gags.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Huk, you're probably contending with the throng of fanboys & H34T members pinging Geoff's poor site. (I'll probably join the scrum in a few hours.)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

It finally loaded and it's pretty sweet. It's just one page, but uh, damn.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dibny is alive!

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, didn't you get the memo? Identity Crisis is an Elseworlds Kingdom Come prequel. Nothing to get so uptight about.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the gritty espionage shenanigans of mid-60s Cap (epitomized by the Steranko HYDRA run)

I don't think that was Cap - wasn't that Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

The Yellow Kid, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Nick & Cap were both drawn by Steranko @ one time (right?) - I might've confused the two runs.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I will just be getting JSA - it had better not be too boring though or I will be forced to mutter darkly to myself.

Is the GCPD buke a reprint of the one that came out already? why don't they get on with it and release volume 2???

Mark C (Markco), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the GCPD buke a reprint of the one that came out already? why don't they get on with it and release volume 2???

Looks like it. I think DC hates this book. Now that Brubaker and Lark are gone (both recently signed exclusives with Marvel), I can see DC putting GC trades even lower on their priority list. I fucking hate DC this week.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Because they're in mourning over Ed Brubaker making his Marvel? (angered Huk-L xpost!)

Really, I have no idea - DC's TPB release philosophy is all sorts of wacky, though that mostly pertains to their Vertigo collections. I think I'd prefer their sporadic release philosophy over Marvel's "GOTTA COLLECT IT ALL" mentality, where they TPB any damn thing regardless of quality or demand. (Then, again, Marvel's range of goods pales in comp. to DC's, so if DC actually DID TPB every damn thing, it'd be a more welcome glut.)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

JSA 70 spoilers a go go - this storyline is still rumbling along with the speed of a glacier. It looks like Deathstroke is asking Black Adam to form a new Injustice Society as part of the Villains United shenanigans. Cool, it is about time the JSA fought some proper supervillains instead of their own legacy angst etc. Mr Terrific stumbles across a kkk meeting in his continuing "oh my god, the past was racist" storyline. of course he does. There is something about Roulette - only 3-4 years after she first actually appeared. Maybe Geoff johns has been studying at the Chris Claremont school of loose end tying uppery.

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Roulette was also in the Formerly Known as the Justice League.

Is the Deathstroke/Black Adam thing just the two pages seen in the preview?
I'm strongly considering dropping JSA, there's only so much reminding of the power of legacy I can take. Especially when you consider how shitty those old 40s comics actually were.

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the BA/Deathstroke thing was just that page from the previews. Black Adam says something like "Society has rejected me" and DS says something like "time to form a new SOCIETY, hint hint".

Yeah, I'm thinking of dropping it too. It is quite boring these days and I am just not that interested in discovering how the 1940s Two Fisted Avenger can be shown to be related to the present day Dr Fate's gardener or what have you. I would probably still look at in the shop though, for old times sake

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

also I looked at Young Avengers for fun and it seemed to be about 16 pages of other people talking about the Young Avengers and a brief fight at the end. Thrill power a plenty. Also they are all boy Young Avengers. How lame is that?

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I love spoilers for DC titles that I'm not going to read. They're so much more fun than other spoilers.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought there was a Young She-Hulk?

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooooh, it looked like a boy hulk to me

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 10 February 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you saying I don't know the difference between a He and a She?

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only really looked at one cover, so I'm probably wrong.

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

S/he-Hulk

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 10 February 2005 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

REMEMBER ME? Wherein our intrepid co-mod kills the work day by posting intermittently about stuff he's bought recently (and wonders whether this should be its own thread) (but also wonders when lunchtime is):

GOTHAM CENTRAL #28: Lark's replacement = top notch. (I'm gonna mulch his name - Stefano Guardiano? Very Lark-like, of course, yet not - Lark was more of a 2X4 panel guy, wasn't he? SG's more willing to break stuff up, spread things across 2 pages, use different sized panels, etc.) HUK-L alert - the villain of this story is a Flash Rogue! Greg Rucka's pushing things along nicely, doing more Montoya-related character development. A nice little start, probably the best issue of GC I've read this year (ha).

WOLVERINE #24 / ULTIMATES 2 #3: Who's up for some cynicism? It's in these books, and it's in the following blah blah, too! Last time I pitched an anti-Millar fit, it was about his handling of Spidey's supporting cast (MJ, mostly), which was less about making salient critiques and more about fanboy pouting. But, now - in Wolverine, 2-3 pages of Logan's interior monologue concerns his jealousy (yeah, JEALOUSY) over Daredevil's ability to score w/ the XX assassin types. And then in The Ultimates, there's Betty Ross banging against a glass pane, desperate to kinoodle w/ Mr. Banner's schluppy self (after showing BB the high hat and the Freddy Prinze last "season"), there's the brazenly promiscuous Black Widow thankfully sighing something like (and I paraphrase, but not really), "God, and to think I almost THREW myself at that freaky hippy", and there's Ms. Van Dyne, ever the submissive, suffering, meek victim standing behind her big strong American gladiator and saying sweet FA during the whole issue. (There's also Jarvis' expression of libido re: Thor's musculature, if you're looking to be real catty about everyone being in heat.)

Maybe this is just needless kvetching - clearly Millar's established from the outset that these characters are super-flawed exaggerations of their lesser qualities and/or flaws (Banner's meekness, Pym's obliviousness, Cap's jingoism, Iron Man's jet-setting proclivities, even Jarvis' fey & cultured Britisnness), and sometimes this works as meta-commentary on what these characters are & what they represent & how messed up these books & characters are at their foundation. But, then, he's also reveling in this debauchery to the point that he's not showing any sort of scruples with regards to making these critiques and then feeding into the stereotypes he's critiquing, and brazenly using the most ridiculous exaggeration of these stereotypes (manly men with barrel chests paired w/ busty shapely women in need of a man and a good rogering and not a damn thing else) to sell his wares. This is seemingly what Millar's MO is nowadays - to beat the reader over the head w/ notions like, "YOU BOYS & MEN ARE REALLY MESSED UP FOR READING THESE VIOLENT OVERSEXUALIZED ANTI-MORALITY FANTASIES [but please buy the Director's Cut next week] [& look at the boobies!]".

I don't know - this is me just thinking aloud & spouting out stuff that probably says more about me than the work. I'll still buy these books (for the art - Romita & Janson & Paul Mounts on the former, Hitch & Co. on the latter - and for the story aside from the character bits I just blathered about), but it's a little disquieting nonetheless. At least, in The Ultimates, the characters aren't just devices for spitting out plot points - you could probably switch dialogue balloons between DD & Elektra & Wolverine & not have it make a damn difference (excepting the few times where Wolvie offers a "bub").

Oh, and about the stories - the Hand got their target, and Bruce Banner is now Hannibal Lecter.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

the villain of this story is a Flash Rogue

I'm picturing a hot Mississippi lass in a full-body red jumpsuit moving REALLY FAST while trying not to touch anything.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 10 February 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Guaradino the new regular artist? I was thinking of skipping this week's comics, but now I'm getting excited.

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he is!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

FURTHERMORE, a Flash tie-in is actually a pretty good fit, despite the fact that Flasher is a big bright superhero and in a million ways the anti-Batman, because Johns has really fleshed out the Keystone City Police Dept, so there are some characters already there.

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

YOUNG AVENGERS #1: Yeah, most of the issue is of folks (JJJ, Jessica Jones, a reporter) talking about the Young Avengers, with a charmingly crap real-time appearance by the team in question in the 2nd half of the book. But I don't know what else you'd want from a 1st issue - it establishes the premise, it introduces the characters, it shows said characters in action, drops a few hints, and it ends on an intriguing cliffhanger. This is really, really well-done - bless you, Jim Cheung - and (more importantly), Allan H. wrote this in such a way that you can hop on board w/out knowing a damn thing about Marvel.

The premise: Daily Bugle writer & Ms. Jones (actually doing something besides crying and yelling for the first time since either the first few issues of The Pulse or the last Alias arc) are sent out by JJJ to investigate these young carbon-copies of established ex-Avengers. Meanwhile, JJ also hooks up w/ Cap & Iron Man to do a little super-powered sleuthing. Yes, it's a boys' club right now, but it's understandable, given that the YAs are made out to be super-geeky fanboys. The Legion of Super-Heroes began as a tribute to the heroes the Legion idolized, right? This concept's pretty similar (in more ways than one), and, like I said, it's done rather well. Not worth the uber-hype (as if anything is), but definitely worth a look.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

>> I don't know what else you'd want from a 1st issue

people doing non stop impossible bendy kicks like in X Force, dammit!

Mark C (Markco), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw previews of #2* - you'll be pleasantly surprised.

* (tee-hee-hee)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Vinmanarama! It's good.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot about Vinmanarama when I went out yesterday! Damn!

OUTSIDERS #19 & #20: Perfunctory downbeat resolution to the John Walsh kidnapped kiddie storyline - Arsenal's kid is scarred for life, kiddie-kidnapper has crap punched out of him (over 3 pages!), lots of glowering & weeping. (Carlos D'Anda's art looks MICH better in #19 than the previous two issues.) And then, in #20, robot sex in Outsider vehicle leads to throwdown w/ pre-GM Doom Patrol villanous mort Shrapnel. And it's Batman's fault, the cheeky bastard! Next month's cover = Nightwing giving Brucey the stinkeye.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it really Batman, though? See the cover of the next-next issue!

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

MICH

FABLES #34: Nice! Nice guest art by David Hahn (previously of Bite Club) Jack Be Nimble (w/ wee li'l Jill) goes to Hollywood w/ truckfull of treasure, & then name-drops Peter Jackson while making me nostalgic for The Player. And, of course, TO BE CONTINUED.

CAPTAIN AMERICA & THE FALCON #12: Priest's run of getting snakebit by subpar artistry continues, as Joe Bennett runs to the greener grass on DC's side of New York, leaving the book in the hands of some chap that tells a decent story, but doesn't exactly impress w/ his draftsmanship. (Anyone remember Tom Grindenberg? Would-be Neal Adams clone that drew folks a bit lumpen & misshapen? Yeah, like that.) And, of course, what you want when you're concluding a 5-part story (that's actually part of a story that began w/ the first issue) is a jarring shift in artistic style for the final chapter. Because, y'know, THAT sort of continuity doesn't mean a damn thing. Dan Jurgens is on board for the final 2 issues of the series, & then lord knows what.

re: Outsiders - I forget who's on the next next cover; all I know is I got to type "stinkeye", so I'm happy.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Next cover is Nightwing/Batman stinkeye, suite is Arsenal being crushed by a Batman-looking-thing while tugging on this BLT's face in a way to suggest that the face is not really a face.
I enjoy the covers more than I enjoy the comics. This goes for the whole world. Double.

Huk-L, Thursday, 10 February 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

ULTIMATE X-MEN #56: More fun in Mojoworld (AKA Genosha)! For those at home not keeping score, here's what's been Ultimated for this arc:

1) Longshot is now a persecuted mutant on the isle of Genosha for a crime (an assassination, actually) he didn't commit; still a lucky SOB, despite his bad luck re: getting INTO messes
2) Mojo is now a plus-sized TV executive producing a reality show where mutants are hunted down & killed for sport; bless you & your dubious morals, Genosha! (&, of course, you can guess who's being hunted, & you can guess that you-know-who is making like Ken Jennings) (&, yes, this is a Brian K. Vaughan book, so the KJ reference was acounted for in the first part of this arc)
3) Arcade is a video-gaming geek turned gadget-happy bounty-hunter brought in to try & take down you-know-who
4) Spiral is, um, Spiral - 6 arms, lots of weapons. No funky helmet, though.

Half the team is there to rescue Longshot & perform recon; half the team is there to exact revenge & kick some oversized albino ass. Art by Stuart Immomnen (sic?) - very nice. Cliffhanger this issue involves a nod to Fall of the Mutants (&/or x-ploits involving the Morlocks). I'd like to think BKV's run on UXM is easily appreciable by folks that don't know mutant from mute ant, but I'm entering Year 20 of Severe X-Story Damage, so I can't say that for sure.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 10 February 2005 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

AQUAMAN #27

Bleh. I don't understand who's who any more or what's going on.

FABLES #34

It's nice to get away from the main characters for a bit. This could be a lot of fun, but needs developing before I'm completely hooked. The Player comparisons are OTM.

GREEN ARROW #47

Back to the meh. Despit emy scepticism, the Mia HIV story has been really well handled, and last month's Titans issue was great. This is just... wallpaper as Roy joins in.

VIMANARAMA #1

It's 1988 again! This looks and feels straight out of Deadline and is none the worse for it. WELCOME TO THE FUTURE, 'MERKINS!!!

INCREDIBLE HULK #78

Bang, thump, bang, thump, bang. Hulk FITE! With himself! This island is very, very strange and PAD throws in a couple of nods to King Kong to show us what we should be thinking. I can't help loving where he's taking us though.

MARVEL KNIGHTS 4 #15

The first story in a new arc shows Franklin beginning to manifest strange time-changey powers. The time detective thingy is kinda naff, but I really like this book so I'm prepared to ride with it.

MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN #11

Boo! Other heroes turn up and save the day! BUT OMG!!1!!WTF!!1!!!!11 THE LAST PANEL!!!!1!11

THE PUNISHER #17

A bit of a cop-out to get out of the corner the last issue had written itself into, with the little martial artist despatched with no difficulty in the end. Guns, blood, shooty-kill. Then a decent last couple of pages leading to a thrilling conclusion next issue! I hope. Fury is very badly written here.

ULTIMATE X-MEN #56

David R has it spot on. I've never liked the X-Men much (there, I've said it), but I enjoy UX-M just fine.

ULTIMATES 2 #3

Bleh. At least the art is nice. This isn't a patch on Ultimates 1.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 11 February 2005 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

INCREDIBLE HULK #77-78: FING FANG FOOM! I would be loving this book just for the Weeks / Palmer art (& I hope they stick around). PAD's a nice bonus, though. I vaguely remember something from PAD's first run re: the Hulk as Banner's pre-gamma alter-ego / imaginary friend, which is addressed here. Also, GRAY & GREEN FITE! Fun smash & bash, nice supporting characters, and MONSTER ISLAND A GO-GO! (YAY SHIFT KEY!) Though the last page (of #78) kinda makes that notion suspect. (Bad thing: I might go back & check on what Bruce Jones did to conclude his run just to get myself up to speed.) Actually, Aldo - does the end of BJ's run have any impact on what's happening w/ this arc?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm. BJ ended his run by revealing the whole thing was a FIENDISH PLOT BY THE LEADER and using mind-control and stuff, so it's entirely possible - but the PAD flashback sequences to Broooooooooce as a child and young man make me think he's got something else up his sleeve.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah - there was also the guy in the chair (hidden from our view) being used as a meta-aware narration device. It looks like The Leader (of course), but I'm hoping for THE SPACE PHANTOM!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait a sec - does The Leader's mind control shenanigans also include the Absorbing Man's out-of-character behavior AND his jumping from person to person? Hmmmm....

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Vimanarama is really good! Deadline indeed. It also appears to star Matt DC (okay, not really).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 12 February 2005 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Gotham Central was really, really good. Guadanio (or whatever) is really good. It's like Lark never left! And I'm more into Rucka now than before (maybe cuz I've read Q&C vol. 1?), so fuck Brubaker. He's dead to me.

JSA bleh. The best thing was the first page (which I had mystifyingly remembered as two in the preview).

Green Arrow Tom Fowler's art has tightened up since last issue, and I think he's finding his voice for GA. I think things are gonna be all right. While I appreciate the relationships focus that Winick has brought to GA, it's feeling a little exploitative. I don't mean the HIV business, I mean he plays all the sidekicks/children as mere angst-fodder for Ollie.

Nightwing bleh.

Outsiders I can't believe 3 out of the 5 comics I read this week featured either Nightwing or Arsenal, and none of them turned my crank. The art was a nice step up from last issue, but the whole Winick relationshipsploitation gimmick is wearing thin on me today. Normally, a comic about relationships at least pretends to be about something else (cf: New Teen Titans, Wolfman/Perez), but Winick is at best writing stories that pretend to be about relationships but are really about relationships.
