The Losers

Now that the first trade is out, does anyone read this? I've only heard good things, but I picked up a random issue a few months ago and was unmoved (possibly because I had no idea who the characters were or what was going on).

I didn't know the first trade was out... I wasn't ever interested enough to pick up the comics of this series. It just seemed to be like an action movie in comic form. (And that's the same reason I wasn't too interested in 100 Bullets.) ...

That definitely seems true about the action movie thing, it also seems to be what they're selling it on.

100 Bullets is another book I've wanted to read for awhile, but it's got a lot more to catch up with. Is it really action-oriented? I've read maybe two issues here and there, and it at least seems like an interesting premise to tell a bunch of smaller stories within.

I'd describe it as an intelligent action comic with a strong 'Mission Impossible' flavour but with a subtlety of character that Hollywood almost always lacks.

Incidentally, has the time maybe come for an end to the comics/movie comparison? Now that the 'widescreen' days are done, they seem to be getting more into a TV frame of mind. (But good TV.)

BTW, 100 Bullets isn't "action", it's "noir". I jumped in mid-stream, and have been doing fine (though what I thought the series was about at first was quite misinformed once I figured out the series' conceit). I like it, but it's been a bit lackluster recently. _The Counterfeit Detective_ is swank, though.

There was a story in 100 Bullets that I heard was great. What what it... "Pool Connection"? Something like that? I think it was in the 2nd trade. My comic seller was telling me about it and a random customer chimed in, saying how great it was.

I've only been w/ 100 Bullets since issue #20, which is circa the 5th or 6th story, & haven't done much lookin' into stories prior to that point. But if you have a fondness for gritty B-movie noir shenanigans and LOTS of Chandleresque puns & similes, 100 Bullets is what you need.

And Vic's OTM re: The Losers, though I imagine it reads better in trade form than in single issues - outside of the technical expert (w/ glasses) and the female assassin, I had some trouble telling who was who on a month-to-month basis. (Please note I am notoriously awful @ telling characters apart if they're not wearing primary-colored spandex or have obvious / cliched character traits / flaws.) Reading the first 6 issues in one setting, though, everything crystallized beautifully.

I got the trade having read great things about it and its.....not bad.
It does read like an action movie in comic form. But if it was an action movie it would be an average one, with a couple of decent set-pieces, some bad dialogue and a really predictable plot. Jock's art is nice, though....

I had to read the trade 1.5 times because it ws only near the end that I could tell people apart. But it is good.

one year passes...
I read the whole run over the weekend. I really enjoyed it, even the totally stupid mega villain plan (though Vic had grumbled to me abt this in the pub, thus drawing its sting somewhat). Corny from soup to nuts, but good corny.

I read it religiously almost from the beginning, even though it completely sucked ass for at least the last year or more.

I didn't really mind the ending, I guess because I like absurd James Bond shit more than I like gritty covert action shit, so the transition from good gritty covert action to just-OK James Bond didn't bother me.

Who will give me my spy action comic which is not outlandish like the Losers ended up being, nor dead-ass boring like queen & country???
