Golden/Silver Age Love & Rockets Poll!

How better to celebrate/appreciate Fantagraphics recent supplanting of the cluttered early catalogue (all those thin and rather pricy (from a gotta-get-em-all viewpoint) trades from which a page or two inevitably fell out upon the twentieth perusal) into a handful of cheap, thick and awfully purty paperbacks than a poll? And a subtler version of the Jaime vs. Beto debate, at that - simple, eh?

I had to check FB's website to see what was in which volume, but after doing so, it's def. The Girl From H.O.P.P.E.R.S.

I just bought the first two Gilbert volumes at my local comic store, on sale, twenty bucks the pair. Never read them before. Excited.

My reading of this stuff is waaaaaaaaaay too spotty.

twenty bucks the pair.

Wow, I'd definitely be buying the whole set at that price. In fact, I may buy them anyway and give my daughter my copies of the big Locas and Palomar hardcovers for xmas.

I have all of them except Amor Y. I got 'em all on amazon for like 6 to 9 bucks; they're my most favoritest books I own and I'm madly in love with them. I think all of them have been lent out at least once.

I read all of these (except for Amor Y Cohetes) over the course of six weeks or so a while back, and I've got to go with Perla La Loca, though Girl from H.O.P.P.E.R.S. is excellent as well. I didn't get as into the Gilbert stories, though I enjoyed Love and Rockets X a fair bit.

Human Disastrophism is basically Blood of Palomar? OK, I vote for that.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Sunday, 14 September 2008 15:48 (sixteen years ago) link

it's Blood plus about 200 pages of other stories.

I went for Perla La Loca, just 'cause it's got "Wig Wam Bam" in it. What an amazing story...

i read half of "new stories" or whatever it's called last night, good stuff. nu-gilbert continues to be pretty violent + surreal (which i guess it always was, but both those elements seem to be emphasized?)(speaking of which, did 'speak of the devil' finish?).

Jordan, Thursday, 18 September 2008 14:33 (sixteen years ago) link

It did, getting more violent (& surreal) every step of the way. Collection comes out early November.

Douglas, Thursday, 18 September 2008 16:36 (sixteen years ago) link

cool, i just need to pick up that last issue.
