Unsung Penciler / Inker Teams

Because I never knew that (according to the CAPTAIN AMERICA: C/D thread) Gene Colan ever worked w/ Joe Sinnott!!!

Granted, the only P/I teams I can think of right now are, um, Byrne / Austin & Kirby / Sinnott. So maybe this should be titled "Penciler / Inker Teams." But it's not.

Buscema/Sinnott is a good'un. Buscema/Palmer, too (though some folks think that Palmer's inks are a bit fussy and overdone).

Tom Palmer can fuss as much as he wants. The Buscema / Palmer team on Avengers was godlike, and comparing his inks NOWADAYS over JRJR's pencils (on Kick Ass) to Klaus Janson's JRJR tracing on his recent Spidey-work is like the difference between HDTV and standard def TV.

Penciler/Inker teams is one of my favorite subjects in comics. But I've gone on the record saying Tuska/Colletta is a guilty pleasure, so all my opinions can be laffed at.

I always thought Sinnott brought a sterility to Buscema that I didn't like. I have more opinions on the subject, but I'm going to try to get through the work day doing a little actual work first.

what is Tuska best known for? I have some of early 80s JLA and/or GL with his art, but those seem like one-offs.

Don Newton/Dan Adkins. Also, Gene Colan/Alfredo Alcala. And of course Curt Swan/Murphy Anderson.

Geo Tuska is prob best known for drawing Iron Man, but his career dates back to the 40s.

Like Rock, I'm going to return to this thread/topic when I have a little more time...

Dan Adkins was great over just about everybody as I recall -- esp. Barry Smith on Conan, Paul Gulacy on MOKF.

I'm gonna get laughed at but... Madureira/Townsend.

Those guys must have been during my hiatus. Never heard of either of them.

If you've seen any art from Loeb's Ultimates 3 series, then you already know them.

David R., Wednesday, 24 September 2008 17:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually, you know Madureira -- don't know if Townsend was on that series.

Speaking of X-teams -- the JRJR / Dan Green combo (who also worked on Roger Stern's Spidey run, IIRC) on Uncanny were pretty swank (when Green didn't overwhelm the pencils and make like a low-rent Janson).

I lovelovelovelove the way the MadMan/Townsend UXM run looks. It is just gorgeous; the exact right mix of anime-influence mixed in with clean, Silver Age lines.

Veitch/Bissette/Totleben. Totally forgot. Lurve the Virgil Finlay influence that Totleben brings to his work.

Buscema/Palmer AVENGERS is certainly a high water mark for the book for me, even with the crazy new superhero they were trying to spin off in the works. Rampage, wasn't it?

anyone/Nowlan

I think I posted in on one of the inker threads, but Alfredo Alcala's inks on John Buscema on the old Savage Sword of Conan books was really amazing. The stuff has that quality like old woodcarvings not unlike the artwork Berni Wrightson did for Frankenstein.

Some of those old school guys were pretty amazing how much they could turn out and still have high quality. From an article I read online about Alfredo Alcala writen just after his death (maybe by Mark Evanier), I guess the companies could not keep that guy busy enough, as he would obsessively knock pages out left and right.

Yeah! I think Alcala was the best inker Buscema ever had, better than Tom Palmer. And Savage Sword, being B&W, showed his work off better than anything with color.

Anyone/Klaus Janson, though more obviously Miller and the recent JRJR.

Nhex, Friday, 26 September 2008 04:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Al Williamson's inking looked really sharp on John Romita Jr. on Daredevil.

earlnash, Friday, 26 September 2008 05:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm glad Williamson had inking to fall back on when he developed his Artist's Block. (I can't find a citation for that, but I remember reading it in an old TCJ I think.)

Onto another inker: Pablo Marcos, C/D?
