what might have been a good time to check out some new titles has instead turned into a nice slow week where i can catch my breath (and not spend so much money): Batman #680 and Top Ten #1

mte, Monday, 29 September 2008 19:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I, and my creditors, look forward to the 6 SI & 4 FC books coming next week.

David R., Monday, 29 September 2008 19:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I like the inevitable strain of self-loathing disguised as self-depreciation that has entered these SHIP threads as of late.

R Baez, Monday, 29 September 2008 19:56 (sixteen years ago) link

BATMAN #680--how do you keep a Robin in suspense?
TOP 10 SEASON 2 #1--because I trust Zander Cannon
AGAINST PAIN HC--Ron Rege!
COMPLETE PEANUTS VOL. 10 1969-1970--Charles Schulz!
MY BRAIN IS HANGING UPSIDE DOWN--"My Sexual History," now with censor bars!

Douglas, Monday, 29 September 2008 21:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Firstly: now that Chip has gotten his props with a weekly thread, I hope Monk will as well. Well played, R. Baez!

Now on to 'business'

Batmorrison
Top Ten
Army@Love

and drooling at a bunch of trades I can't afford.

There is no Grodd but Mallah and Congorilla is His Prophet. (Oilyrags), Monday, 29 September 2008 21:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Batman #680
Sub-Mariner Depths #2 (and #1 if they have a copy lying around)

Will flip through the new Top 10 and see how it looks. Also will probably flip through new Meat Cake and then half-heartedly buy it.

arango, Monday, 29 September 2008 21:46 (sixteen years ago) link

PUNISHER MAX TP FROM FIRST TO LAST (finally back in print; contains the fantastic "The End" with Richard Corben)

This is stuff not in the big hardcovers then? Outside miniseries? Worthwhile?

MY BRAIN IS HANGING UPSIDE DOWN--"My Sexual History," now with censor bars!

That sounds kinda pointless! What else is in this, is it just a Deadpan/Mome collection or new (non-dream comic?) stuff?

Otherwise Top Ten (first Cannon-written comic this millennium?) and Army @ Love.

john della boscaoila (sic), Monday, 29 September 2008 21:57 (sixteen years ago) link

I made it to the comic store for the first time in three weeks.

Final Crisis Revelations 2 - This was pretty wicked how they have brought the spear of destiny and Vandal Savage together. The stuff with the Anti-life equation towards the end was great. Some of the colors were kind of dark, but I liked the artwork.

Action Brainiac pt. 4- Gary Frank's artwork is pretty killer and so far it has been a good read. The big new Brainiac kind of reminds me a bit of that huge android dude with the crome dome back in the old Star Trek episode "What are Little Girls Made Of?". (Note: I'm enough of a geek that I could figure it out from the wiki episode guide, I don't have that off the top of my head.)

Conan the Cimmerian 3- This book is a good read. The artwork is really excellent and I was happy to see that there was some more Richard Corben art in the flashback to Conan's grandfather. The coloring on this book is also fantastic.

Batman Confidential 21- Kevin Maguire's artwork has been really nice on this current story arc dealing with Batgirl and Catwoman. This story was fun, which considering how dark and weird the regular Bat books have been is something cool. The Blockbuster scene was really funny. DC should get Kevin Maguire on another regular title, he really uses faces well in his story telling.

All Star Superman 12/ All Star Batman 10 - Boy, you cannot get much different than these books. Morrison/Quitely's run is an instant classic, perfect in its execution. All Star Batman is such a weird comic. Jim Lee's artwork is really amazing, but what an oddball book. Has Jim Lee really done a 'classic' comic story? I know Jim Lee is popular as all get out, but is there a run on something considered an excellent read through and through? I've read Hush, but that is about it by him.

I probably won't end up at the store this week, but this is it from the list.

Batman 680
Doktor Sleepless 8
Nightwing 149

I'll probably either get the new 100 Bullets trade or the next volume of Y the Last Man (Vol. 6).

I hope to also find that Solomon Kane #1 (with the Cassaday cover if possible), which came out and sold out, even though it was on my pull list.

PUNISHER MAX TP FROM FIRST TO LAST (finally back in print; contains the fantastic "The End" with Richard Corben)

This is stuff not in the big hardcovers then? Outside miniseries? Worthwhile?

The three stories collected in From First to Last- "The Cell," "The Tyger" and "The End"- were released under the MAX imprint, and fit in with Ennis's MAX run in tone, but don't take place in that series' continuity. They were published as separate one-shots, then collected in a hardcover that's been out of print for a while.

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 00:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Those Ennis' Punisher stories are all pretty good. I don't see why The Cell or The Tyger along with the Born miniseries wouldn't fit with the other MAX stories or at least there is nothing in there to contradict them. I'd actually like to see Ennis do some more Punisher stories actually set in the 70s or 80s.

The Cell - This it the Punisher MAX tale of Frank Castle getting revenge on the people that were directly involved with the murder of his family.

The Tyger - This story is in flashbacks from when Frank Castle started his war on the mob and features a tale of him growing up in Brooklyn. I think it may be the best single Punisher story that Garth Ennis did and has some really great artwork by John Severin that fits it perfect.

The End - Like the other Marvel 'The End' stories, this one is a last Punisher tale taking place during the Apocalypse with some gritty Richard Corben artwwork.

um, just Batmoz for me, which is totally worth a stop at the comic shop on Wed. The hard part will be to escape w/0 buying anything else. Like last week, when I got the very excellent M. Leotard book.

In other news, I'm getting rid of more comics. email me for ebay sales, or just whatever. I'm basically just trying to get them into good homes. Lotsa Showcase Prez.

Dr. Superman, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 06:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Batman #680
Red Mass For Mars #2
Cable Vol 2 #7
Boys #23

Um. I guess that's it.

Mordy, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 06:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Lotsa Showcase Prez.

You mean SHOWCASE PRESENTS, not SHOWCASE PRESENTS: PREZ, right?

David R., Tuesday, 30 September 2008 13:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh man if only

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 17:05 (sixteen years ago) link

except you'd be paying for 80 pages of comics and then 460 completely blank pages!

john della boscaoila (sic), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 02:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Or those 80 pages reprinted an additional 5 3/4 times! Think positive, man!

Also: Batman dang oh dang

Does BowieJoker's speech pattern remind anyone else a little of Roast Beef Kazenzakis?

How good was Batman? Holy cliffhanger. Even Daniel's art seemed to work.

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 2 October 2008 16:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm the only person here reading New Warriors, right?

i am the small cat (HI DERE), Thursday, 2 October 2008 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh you betcha -- heard some not-so-great things about it (and the Underworld taint doesn't help). How is it?

David R., Thursday, 2 October 2008 16:43 (sixteen years ago) link

It's... okay. I mean, it's a book about depowered mutants using technology to emulate superpowers; it's probably just about as good as you'd expect.

They just killed Stacy X in it this week, though! It also has probably the best iteration of Jubilee I've read since 1994.

i am the small cat (HI DERE), Thursday, 2 October 2008 18:46 (sixteen years ago) link

It also has probably the best iteration of Jubilee I've read since 1994.

Could there be more qualified praise?

James Morrison, Thursday, 2 October 2008 23:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I was reading New Warriors, but it sucked really bad. I dropped it about 6 months ago.

Mordy, Thursday, 2 October 2008 23:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Could there be more qualified praise?

You'll have to wait until Michael Chabon's Maggot & Mammomax miniseries to find out!

David R., Thursday, 2 October 2008 23:44 (sixteen years ago) link

MaggotT

WhateverR

David R., Friday, 3 October 2008 14:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Honestly, I would not be reading New Warriors if it didn't have Jubilee and Jono in it. I really could not care any less about the other characters (except maybe Angel and Beak).

i am the small cat (HI DERE), Friday, 3 October 2008 17:51 (sixteen years ago) link

will pick up Batman and that Sub-Mariner thing this Wednesday, hopefully.
