Is it bad that I'm enjoying this more than the Whedon run?

Dunno about bad, but weird. I was all set to enjoy it but I've been bored, bored, bored. No feel for the characters, who seem to speak in generic Ellis anglicisms. The one big idea we've seen so far is fun but not exactly game-changing. I'd love to be persuaded otherwise though...

Legion of 3 Worlds
Rogue's Revenge
Justice Society of America ---- Tri-Johns Wednesday!

Amazing Spider-Man -- end of the JRJR story, and the end of my time with the series until the next Slott storyline comes around.

Mighty Avengers -- oh, my like/hate relationship with the Bendis Avengers...

Uncanny X-Men -- sigh.
Astonishing X-Men -- yeah, I dunno Douglas, you probably should feel weird about liking this more than the Whedon run. At least Whedon cared. At least Cassaday could tell a story. So far this is just flashy hackwork. At least it's not actively awful, though.

FINAL CRISIS LEGION OF THREE WORLDS #2 - Wow, it has been awhile on this one. I'm probably going to have to re-read the first one again.
FINAL CRISIS ROGUES REVENGE #3 - I wonder where this is going to leave off. I sure hope they don't do something stupid and like kill off Captain Cold.
SCALPED TP VOL 03 DEAD MOTHERS - This comic is killer and good thing is that I just read the first two trades a few weeks back.
CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #4 - The first four issues (counting the zero issue) of the new title were all good reads with some really excellent artwork and colors (beyond even the flashbacks by Richard Corben). The Dark Horse Conan comics are pretty good. I'm about up to the end of the Busiek run and it is also quite well done.

I might get the Jimmy Olsen special, but really after the first three issues of James Robinson's Superman run, I just don't care much.

Oh. OK. Anybody seen this stuff? Worth a look?

His first story (Ridgway art) was a two-parter set entirely inside the TARDIS, and was really good.

His second story (Ridgway again) was a three-parter bringing back Geriatric Jamie McCrimmon and was THE BEST DR WHO COMIC EVER but total continuity-porn.

His third story was a one-off and drawn by Bryan Hitch, and was pretty bad. It was also the first McCoy strip IIRC - the other two were Colin Baker with Frobisher. And Peri, I think.

AGE OF SENTRY #2 (OF 6) -- Look alive, fans of 1963! (and yr boy Paul Tobin, Douglas!)
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #573
ASTONISHING X-MEN #27 -- would be so much better w/ a different artist that, like, thought about flow between panels
GUARDIANS OF GALAXY #6 -- FUN FUN FUN (even if AbLan seemingly stole their dog-Skrull thing from Herc)
HULK MONSTER SIZE SPECIAL #1 -- OK enough w/ the drawer-emptying one-shots
IRON MAN DIRECTOR OF SHIELD #34 -- this has been OK-plus, but make w/ the Pak series already!!!
MIGHTY AVENGERS #19
SECRET INVASION FRONT LINE #4 (OF 5) -- ungh; this mini gives me migrane
ULTIMATE ORIGINS #5 (OF 5)
UNCANNY X-MEN #503 -- Greg Land, you hopeless tracer, may your lighttable forever need maintenance

Best Dr. Who ever sounds pretty good, total continuity porn not so much since I don't know much about the show. For example, who the hell Jamie McCrimmon is.

^^^ really great character

Praising Whedon's Astonishing run over Ellis's with "at least he cared!" shows a fundamental lack of cognitive skills.

man, I haven't hit the store in weeks now; is this the end, again?

GM, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 21:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Very weird and confusing thing: the new issue of Uncanny was not bad! I mean, there's a couple very annoying bits, and the art is still by Greg Land, but it was okay. Maybe Fraction can get it under control, and up to the standard of his work on Iron Man and Iron Fist.

I thought the Jimmy Olsen special was alright, better than the opening arc in Superman by Robinson. I'm kind of curious to see now how the story eventually ties in with the 7 Soldiers series. There was some cool stuff setup with the Vigilante being back from the dead (and young again), this new Guardian and the Cadmus Project. There was plenty of story setup in the special.

I also finally picked up the first Essential Tomb of Dracula. I've been looking at that one for a long time, as it is some classic Marvel comics I never read back when I was a kid and was always curious about. I've read through the first four issues and it is pretty good so far. Gene Colan's artwork looks great in black and white.
