Moebius/Jean Giraud: s/d

It seems we've never have a thread about this guy, so let's have one. I just finished reading The Incal by Moebius and Jodorowsky, and it was pretty awesome! I'm not sure if Jodorowsky actually had any grand scheme when writing this epic or if he was just making things up as it went along, but the sheer amount of cool ideas and cosmic visions was still great! And the script was still more coherent than in many of Moebius' self-penned works (like The Airtight Garage), which sometimes get a bit too psychedelic. Out of the long-form stories Moebius has both drawn and written, I've liked the Edena series the most. Unfortunately only the first three books have been translated into Finnish, I hope they translate the rest of them too some day.

Feel free to talk about Blueberry here too.

I would recommend the Confederate Gold saga from Blueberry unreservedly.

my favourite strip written and drawn by moebius = 'white nightmare', a brilliant, slightly atypical slice of urban paranoia ('the horny goof', a much more typical sexy psych indulgence, runs it a close second)

'the long tomorrow',the collab w/ dan o'bannon, sorta anticipates the jodorowsky stuff and is also pretty gd

Has The Long Tomorrow been collected somewhere?

Yes, it was one of Epic's Moebius series in 1987, but long out of print.

Long Tomorrow also in late 90's Dark Horse reprint series "Moebius H.P.'s Rock City"

I just started this, having found the Epic Blueberry translations for cheap. First book was great; second is starting well.

I have those editions, they're gorgeous. I think the fourth book is my favourite.

Yeah, not the kind of thing that you want to read first thing on a Saturday.

But I'll tell a funny story. I'm at BEA, last year or second to last year of University, but really still just a big kid. BEA, by the by is the big publisher's/bookseller's convention, held not far from my home that year.

And I'm there, and I look up at booth and HOLY SHIT IT'S STAN LEE. And there's a smaller, slimmer, unmistakably French gentleman next to him, who Stan is introducing to someone (I want to say his wife, but not positive.) And Stan says, in a typically Stan fashion "And this is Moebius."

Just a common pleasantry between two of the gentlemen who were both big parts of my youth. Kind of a mind-melting moment.

First thing of his I read was Blueberry, the Confederate Gold saga. Not typical at all as I later discovered, but an awesome awesome story, and an evocatively dusty and grimy vision of the Old West.

yeah was looking at that in the shop, artwork looked a little rougher than usual...? couldn't tell if that was because it was maybe being reprinted bigger than originally or something.

haven't gotten a chance to get to it yet, been reading a friend's copy of The Metabarons, but I think you're maybe right about the art looking blown up

Just heard, this is really tragic

just started the incal. terrific so far, love the way he captures the story.

After seeing the new Dune and then the Jodorowsky doc and rereading some collected Moebiuses I acquired a while back, I got a bit excited asked for The Incal for Xmas. Luckily I didn't go overboard with the pre/sequels or metabarons as, we'll, it's not very good. Inane, overstuffed and repetitive without any of the charm of, say, the Edena stories.

Moebius is an unimpeachable talent but yeah, he has so much output and story-wise, often weak

Even if that floats your boat I wouldn't recommend the Humanoids 2020 paperback edition - the text is so thin and small I could barely read it except in the strongest light (lol old but I didn't think my eyesight was that bad); and the introduction is fatuous, vapid, and sexist (hmm maybe it's a good fit after all).
