Wot no Bialya?

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 11:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Borduria as depicted in The Calculus Affair is a hilarious and spot-on parody of a Stalinist state, so that.

I for one would love to live in an idealised pre-industrial Eastern European nation ruled over by a nutter in a high-tech suit of armour and a green cloak.

DC has Qatar and Santa Prisca as well - prob. more. DC def. has a lot of fictional cities.

Qatar is imaginary?

WmC, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 16:44 (fifteen years ago) link

oops, Qurac

Velma can stay (Oilyrags), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 17:16 (fifteen years ago) link

or Qarac? Something like that.

Velma can stay (Oilyrags), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 17:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Santa Prisca!
From that Batman Annual where he busts Two-Face out of Arkham! Batman guesses that whoever it is he's looking for is a cop in Santa Prisca because the way the guy's hair is flattened out suggested the cheap hats Santa Prisca cops wear.

no Savage Land though? really?

Test Tube Teens from the Year 1754 (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 19 January 2009 02:44 (fifteen years ago) link

The poll was based on the Wikipedia list of imaginary countries, so anything missing from that list is missing here too. You could argue that Savage Land is no technically a country though. Other imaginary locations that are not countries (like Atlantis or Mu) are missing from the list too.

I'm a huge x-guy, but I went Latveria over Genosha. Why? Cause Genosha got blowed up by Morrison.

isn't Corto Maltese a country?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 13:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Corto Maltese is the protagonist of the Hugo Pratt comic of the same name, not a country.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 13:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Frank Miller made Corto Maltese the name of a country in Dark Knight Returns.

WmC, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 14:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, I don't remember that bit. I guess it was a tribute to Pratt.

does wakanda have any distinguishing characteristics beyond generic africa stand-in?

genosha is kind of confusing to me. without looking at wikipedia, i think it was a fascist island run on mutant slave labor, which later got taken over by magneto and became a mutant nation? and then got blown up?

It is one of the most technologically-advanced countries on the planet along with Latveria.

Isn't Wakanda an anomolously wealthy country due to their rich natural resources (Vibranium) and their leade's ridiculous economic protectionism?

the wakanda wiki is very illuminating.

Tracy Michael Jordan Catalano (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 January 2009 18:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's a really fascinating country that often gets glossed over because all people generally see is "oh black people in Africa, got it"

selections from "enemies of the Black Panther"

The Soul Strangler - An evil supernatural creature that referred to itself as the master of the Ku Klux Klan.

Dragon Circle - A multicultural hate organization.

Achebe (later known as Reverend Achebe) - A poor farmer somewhere in South Africa, Achebe sold his soul to the demon Mephisto. He is portrayed as a grinning, unpredictable, lunatic, warrior-mystic, regularly talking to his mannequin Daki without delusions that it's truly alive, and engineering complex plots of social unrest for profit or entertainment.

# White Avenger - Leader of the Azanian Supremacists, blindly patriotic national symbol. His powers included superhuman strength and durability, flight, enhanced vision, infravision, and hyper-awareness.[2]
