Here's what I bought and read last night:

Planetary #19: It never feels like they really get a chance to dig into all that they could in each issue, but it's good, the art is some of my favorite anywhere, and I wish it came out more frequently.

Human Target: It took a little bit to get into this book since I hadn't read the previous run at all, but now it's one of the ones I look forward a lot. The constant bringing-things-around-to-9/11 might be a little forced, but better than nothing I suppose.

Wanted #3: Yes, instead of Clayface it's Shitface, how droll.

Batman: I think this was the last of the Azzarello run. Jesus, never before have I had such a hard time keep the characters straight from month to month or figuring out what the hell is going on. I really do like his actual writing, but it started to seem like more of a mess as it went on. I like Killer Croc's pimp gear though.

Kinetic #1: Meh. Maybe it'll be good, or maybe not.

I also wanted to get the second Hellboy trade, but they were out. However, I did read Pancakes in the store, and Leee was right - it is the pinnacle of modern letters. I even ate a pancake this morning.

The last things I purchased from my comic seller was:

Boneyard #13: [sigh] Why can't Paris and Abby just get together already?

Thessaly, Witch for Hire #2 (of 4): Yo... I used to think Thessaly was a no-nonsense badass but I'm beginning to think she's just a bitch.

Just purchased from Amazon: American Splendor anothology, Hellboy 3,4,5 and Morbid Drive: A Comprehensive Study of Pure Evil, Dieting, and the Undead (which looked really cute because it "reads like a spoof handbook for vamipes.") Should be here sooooooon.

Since Hellboy comes out tomorrow, I probably won't be able to read all the other trades before I see it. But that's all right because I think I got the jist from the first two trades.

Thessaly, Witch for Hire #2 (of 4): Yo... I used to think Thessaly was a no-nonsense badass but I'm beginning to think she's just a bitch.

No reason she can't be both!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

True, but I admire no-nonsense badasses and dislike bitchy control freaks. She's going to have to do something pretty sweet and/or impressive to win me back.

Leee was right

I like hearing this. :) Almost as much as I like spreading the HB love.

Quick note, though, is that there's a $0.25 HB short story called "The Corpse" on sale too. Another great single, Mignola actually wrote it in two page installments and it's quite breathless.

VG, you should do an HB marathon! They breeze by extremely quickly (except possibly Conqueror Worm, which plot I'm sure won't inform the movie).

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I got the Corpse last week. It reminded me how much I love Mignola's art. Wowza.
And I just read Ebert's review of the HB movie and it sounds sooo good. I'm excited.

three weeks pass...
Read Y: The Last Man #20 last night. My affection for this series is wearing thin. Nothing seems to be happening. Sure, Yorik gets tortured by some hott S&M chick in order to learn more about himself, and that was all fun... But when in the hell are they going to make it to San Francisco already? Why hasn't Yorik forgotten about Beth in Australia? Chances are if they can't even make it across the country in a year and half, he sure as shit can kiss an island continent thousands of miles away good-bye.

And also read Fables #22.a All the love I'm not giving to Y has been funneled into this series. It's getting good now, baby. Pinocchio might be an asshole but this issue made me feel for him.

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Thursday, 22 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Fables is rockin' it. It's a good comparison: Y is kind of treading water while Fables, even though it could have told stories about the characters for years without dealing with the Adversary, just keeps moving faster and faster.

Also, I love the idea of Little Boy Blue having thousands of years to practice trumpet and being a great jazz musician.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

So I take it that Fables vol 1 is the least of the the later installments?

SLeeeter Kinney (Leee), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know, it's all pretty strong, it's just getting especially exciting recently.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 23 April 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

VG - have you read the Survivalist-Militia story yet in Y?

I agree that Y becomes problematic in the long run.

I also wonder why no one has registered that a plague which kills every male in the world *simultanaeously* is almost certainly of MAGICAL origin.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 23 April 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: Fables - the first arc was OK, but a bit slow. I think the series hit its stride as soon as Mark Buckingham became the semi-regular penciler (not to poo on original artiste Lan Medina, who, BTW, is doing FANTASTIC work on Marvel's _Silver Surfer_ series) (oh, fuck, there's a pun in there). Has _Animal Farm_ been collected yet? Leeee, if you want to give Fables another shot, that's where you should go.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

animal farm has been collected and i read it last week and it was rubbish

tom west (thomp), Friday, 23 April 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

See? Tom liked it!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

-DV, yeah I read it.

All storylines are too compartmentalized in Y, I think. Yorik's sister joins the Amazons, escapes in the end. Men in space try to return to earth, don't make it. I don't know if this is to make for neater packages to make trade paperbacks from or what, but I want to read a series where I say, "No way!" and have to go back to past issues to find a clue I overlooked. You know?

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the way Y's written, form a narrative standpoint, is why I buy it monthly now -- serialized episodes that you can pick up and enjoy immediately after a 30-day hiatus, the exact opposite of an X-title. (HAH GEDDIT X-TITLE & Y, YOU KNOW CHROMOSOMES!?)
