What's the name of your comic book store?

The Funnybook Factory, owned by Tom.

(Tom is actually really good friends with my housemates, so he's always over playing video games, etc.)

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Capital City Comics. My girlfriend and I go there because she's been going there for like 10 years, and it's ostensibly a charming little store. Lately, however, we won't go in for a couple weeks at a time and they'll have not pulled any of our books for us, which defeats the whole point of going there. Especially since the owner's EX-WIFE'S COMIC BOOK STORE is like five minutes from our apartment. It's big and impersonal but very well-organized and stocked.

We're considering a defection.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The name of my comic store might end up being Midtown Comics (in lovely downtown NYC), as my local place (run by the guy that used to work @ my hometown comic shop!) tends to:

A) miss some of the less-regular "indie"r stuff on my pull list (cf. Goon, Berlin)
B) semi-discriminately pull stuff related to my list based on CHARACTER not CREATOR (cf. I like Wolverine = I want Wolverine/Captain America NO!, and I mistakenly still pull Incredible Hulk = I want every piece of crap Hulk thing out there HELL NO!, but I like Alias + USM + Daredevil + Powers != I desire The Pulse & Secret War??? YOU POXY FULES!)
C) allow ransacking of the weekly shipments every Wednesday by stragglers as they open the boxes & do a quick inventory (which might be why A) always happens to me)

Irksome, to say the least. I blame his employees. Boo hiss.

Or I might just drive the 20+ minutes and make Buried Under in Manchester, CT my pusherman.

x-post!

How do you "break up" with your comic store? Do you honestly and frankly go through the list of reasons, or do you meekly offer some lame-o excuse and take your business elsewhere?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't broken up with The Funnybook Factory, but I see other people (namely, a big brute named Amazon). I don't mind getting comics from Tom but I can get my graphic novels 30% cheaper at Amazon (and that's a lot of bread to be saved).

Tom knows I'm obsessed with Gaiman, so he'll pull anything and everything Gaiman's touched, colaborated, thunk up, etc. Usually it's graphic novels and I feel obligated to buy them.

But Tom gives me 10-15% off my purchases all the time, so that's really nice.

Reader's, not a great name, but they have a really great website:

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Believe it or not, Lee's Comics.

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

And when I was in Berkeley, I split time between Comic Relief and Comics & Comix (which was 3 blocks from where I lived at the time, and where Diana Schutz (later to be Marvel & Dark Horse (I think?) editor) worked and at one time MET FRANK MILLER).

Haha, we tried to do this yesterday. He was apologetic enough about missing our stuff, but in kind of a, you know, patronizing comic book store owner way. Thing is, I know other people who literally go there about twice a year and having everything on their list waiting for them. We did let him know that if it keeps happening we're taking our business to his ex-wife (snap!). It was totally like trying to break off a relationship though, suprisingly hard to do.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never got into this thing of getting comic shops to keep things for me... no, I don't want that.

my comic shop is Sub City. In Dublin. Because I am *shy* I have never really got into being friends with the Sub City people, who all seem like very likeable fellow who are into their comics and not in a wankery comic store bloke kind of way. I bumped into one of them on the big anti war march last year, so he's obviously a sound kind of bloke.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 1 April 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to go to SubCity when I lived in Dublin. I bumped into one of them in a club one night. He was pissed. We did the usual polite nod we always did in the shop anyway. The End.

I've never got into this thing of getting comic shops to keep things for me... no, I don't want that.

I thought that was the point of comic shops? I don't have the time go to a comic shop every single week to keep up with what I want to read, much less go every Wednesday to insure I get them before they sell out. I do enjoy the ritual of it, but sometimes I've just got shit to do, yo.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 1 April 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I get my issues from Forbidden Planet, because they frankly have more of them, but buy Graphic Novels from Sub City because y'know, support the indies and so on.

Was it tall SC guy or bald SC guy on the march?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 2 April 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I also frequent Comic Relief in berkeley. Stand-up guys, but their filing system is nuts.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

GOSH!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 3 April 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I go to Gosh! too - it's five minutes walk from where I work, and is just opposite the British Museum. Also an old pal of mine named Tony works there, so that's an extra reason.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 3 April 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan, do you live in Madison, WI? Or is there another Capital City Comics out there somewhere?

I've just started up again with having a pull file at Collector's Edge, which is a small chain around here (Milwaukee, WI).

Chris F. (servoret), Saturday, 3 April 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I was just going to ask Jordan that. If you do live in Madison, have you checked out the Blue Dog yet?

otto, Saturday, 3 April 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I do live in Madison. I grew up in Milwaukee though and went to Collector's Edge, and one of my friends used to swear by it.

I went into the Blue Dog once when I lived downtown, but they had just opened and weren't really set up yet. How is it?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 5 April 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I go to GOSH because it's about 2 minutes from my walk, but then so are loads of other places - mostly I go because it's a nice shop run by human beings, seems to have human beings shopping there, and ISN'T packed with awful statuettes and action figures.

I've never asked for a "pull list" tho, for that way lies MADNESS. Since I got back into reading comics after a 10 year absence I have tried, and almost succeeded in NOT buying every issue of ANYTHING just because I always have done... as a youth I bought "Alpha Flight", for instance, for YEARS without ever wanting to, and this must never happen again.

MJ Hibbett, Monday, 5 April 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only switched to having a pull file since I've found that comic book stores these days seem to go out of stock on the things that I actually want to read surprisingly quickly-- randomly bopping into a store every three or four months doesn't really work for me anymore. I know what you mean about buying things that you don't really want though; I think I'm already dropping a couple of the titles from the list.

Chris F. (servoret), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

My local comic store is the Beguiling in Toronto. It's seriously the best store I've been into. They organise regular lectures and signings (Tomine, Seth, Sacco, Chester Brown all in the past 6 months, Grant Morrisson soon), and they seem to be the *only* comic store I've been into that has all the indies on the ground floor, and relegates the superhero stuff to a small annex up top. (Not that they make you feel embarassed for buying that stuff). The only disclaimer: it's not really the sort of store you can pick up 6 comics and stand an read in for an hour.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, at least I know where to do comic shopping if I'm ever in Dublin or Madison.

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Gosh is ace, but they didn't stock the Louis Riel h/b. Neither, as far as I can tell, did any London comic shop. I got it from amazon within 4 days. Nuff said, true believer.

G., Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The Blue Dog's alright so far as new titles go, but it's thin on back issues. My take is it's more RPG than comics oriented.

otto, Friday, 9 April 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

If you'd asked for the Riel book at Gosh!, I'd imagine they would have got it in for you. I do have a list with them, albeit a short one, so that they don't sell out of the comics I want - I can't be bothered going in every Thursday to get the new things, or indeed every week. I feel like I don't buy enough for that to be worthwhile.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 9 April 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

eh, either go to
Fat jacks, in center city (philadelphia) because they have hard to get shit and there usually is a lack of ass clowns floating about. If it is new comic day I will venture to showcase comics (which is on south street in philly) but that is only when I am desperate.

Hello Lea and welcome, don't forget to introduce yourself!

SLeeeter Kinney (Leee), Thursday, 22 April 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Austin Books and Comics. When I lived in England my local was The Cartoon Shop in Basildon. I'd forgotten all about Gosh, used to love that place.

rw, Wednesday, 19 May 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Von's comics and movies. They have a great collection of old and new single issues, but the TPBs are right by the cash register so you can't browse without being stepped on or overhearing loud smug conversations from the guys behind the desk or the people renting the anime p0rn. So sometimes I go to Borders so that I can sit and read in a comfy chair while drinking coffee.

Jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Comickaze. Good store, too.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, trades are cheap at amazon.com. $10.95 for the Queen & Country trade I paid $14.95 + tax for the other day, they might have to be my new comic book store (for trades, anyway).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Amazon is great for that, especially if you're already getting something else and end up getting the free shipping. The Essentials are cheap enough as it is, but with the Amazon markdown ... sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, feeling stupid for not having bought some of them yet.

Okay, not really, but still.

Speaking of online buying, I've been happy with Mile High Comics for back issues -- I got a couple of Ambush Bugs the other day, and the "Rocky Grimm, Space Ranger" post-Secret Wars arc of the Thing, all for good prices (mostly because I went with like VG and F because all I cared about was reading em).

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Mile High has my you know what -- but it'd defeat the purpose of the Quest!

Leee's a Simpson (Leee), Thursday, 27 May 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but Martin this is CHESTER BROWN! They stock all the Drawn and Quarterly stuff, and they used to have them all at the front of the shop. I just don't understand why this wasn't an obvious ten copy order, at least. Surely people still like Chester Brown.
(Forgot about Chet </emimem>)

g., Saturday, 29 May 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
If anyone was thinking of buying something from Mile High Comics -- I've always been very happy with them, since back in the day when they had the yellow advertisements in comics and there was no internet shopping -- the "secret codeword" to type in is BARGAINS in order to get an extra 30% off this week. (At least I think it's all week. It doesn't seem to say, in the email I just got.)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

> Mile High has my you know what

ha, oddly that's the only one of that storyline that i have, bought for the mignola art. i kinda gave up on lotdk early on but then started picking them up again when i saw them in the 4 for a pound bins.

so, is there a thread here where we post things that aren't particularly rare but which we've been looking for for ages?

koogs (koogs), Friday, 25 June 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The closest thing would be this thread, but yo, feel free to start one.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 25 June 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

seven months pass...

I shop at the Comic Cave here in Winnipeg, which is sort my neighbourhood's equivalent of Gosh, I suppose. It's a little farther away than other shops, but they give 25% off cover price for subscriptions. But I really miss Forbidden Planet, if only because you can stand there for eight hours reading the entire Preacher and Swamp Thing collections and nobody bats an eye.

Oblivious Lad (Matthew Lazowski), Sunday, 13 February 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

nine years pass...

Sad to hear the one of the local comic book stores of my youth is closing down after 22 years. Alternate Realities was probably the last comic book shop in Westchester to survive the comic book boom and bust of the '80s and '90s. Lotta good memories, though I haven't really been back there more than a handful of times in the past 15 years. The owner posted a bitter screed on Facebook about how what killed him were the handful of terrible customers who would reserve books and never pay for them. I'll miss Steve!

Nhex, Monday, 2 February 2015 00:23 (ten years ago)

Grew up with The Great Escape, had a few others between, I guess Desert Island is my spot now? Really more a mix of internet/amazon/ebay/Strand Bookstore.
