Larry Alcala looks like an amazing mix of Will Elder and Gilbert Hernandez: http://www.alanguilan.com/museum/larryalcala01.html

Anybody know if any of his work has been translated into English.

Alcala's self-caricature looks a little like Peter Griffin!

This Gerry Alanguilan guy seems really interesting! His blog is a good read and I gotta make some time to try his book, 'Elmer'.

Full first issue is on his site for download.

yeah, the rolando a/work is very similar to the stuff that nestor redondo did over kubert layouts on things like RIMA from DC in the early 70s

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 23 April 2009 21:19 (fifteen years ago) link

based on that one piece alone, that's some pretty innovative layout work.

always had a soft spot for steve gan, whose artwork is kinda like john buscema inked by russ manning - great to see an original (even w/ the TERRIBLE mark wolfman dialog)

I wrote him to ask if he's sell me a run.

Here's what he wrote me back to say:
Thanks for writing! Unfortunately issue #1 is out of print ( but can be read online at http://www.alanguilan.com/sanpablo/elmer ). Issues 2-4 are still available. 2 and 3 are $2.95 each, and #4, being triple the length of the two, is at $4.95
The items total: $10.85
The shipping and handling from the Philippines is $12
Total is: $22.85, but let's just round that off to $22.
To make it worth your while, I'll include an original Elmer drawing with your package, along with a signed Elmer Gallo family photo.
I take Paypal here: gerryalanguilan at yahoo dot com

I went for it; I'm big on creator supported work, especially when they're smart and cool enough to give away milk so you come back to buy the cow.
Drop him a line and tell him john in NY sent you.

Got the Alcala book, it's fun! Good gag cartoons from a completely different world.

God yeah. It reminds me of Bolland and P Craig Russell. Lots of terrific stuff on that site, who knew?
