Ultimate Galactus OMG!

Just finished Ultimate Nightmare and I feel free to give away the shock ending (as Amazon already did this in their solicitation notes for the collected edition).

This one was a bit of a slow burner. Not a lot was happening and then in the fial issue it all kicks off. Firstly: the Ultimate Vision as Herald for Galactus - What the hell is Warren Ellis on and where can I get some? Secondly "There are many names for it...World Eater, Gah Lahk Tuss". My jaw hit the floor.

Okay the second series in the Trilogy, Ultimate Secret has just started with the introduction of the Ultimate Captain Marvel. And how! This is shaping up to be the best set of trad superhero miniseries of the year (and as a big[ish] DC fanboy I was as stoked about Infinite Crisis as anyone could be)

Whilst Ellis does have his knockers (Oo-er!), when he puts his mind to it he can do superheroics like no-one else. He pretty much kicked off the modern widescreen superhero trend on his own. (And in Stormwatch , of all things where no one in their right mind would have been looking)

Anyhow: What do you lot think?

I have to admit I wasn't too shocked by the shock ending (given that the Ultimate Universe generally re-spins classic Marvel situations, opening with alien words being wiped out screams "Galactus"), but I did like Ultimate Nightmare. Very slow paced but I liked the grimy atmosphere and I'm fond of these versions of the characters.

Ultimate Vision isn't the herald exactly is he, he's kind of a warning system? I wonder if there's an Ultimate Silver Surfer on its way, probably not given the Ultimate U's general aversion to goofiness.

This is something like the third re-telling of "The Coming Of Galactus" in the last 10-15 years but I get excited every time, much more so than by in-continuity appearances of Galactus: I think it's a story which lends itself to retellings.

Tom & Stone Monkey OTM - though I was pretty sure what was going on @ first, it was neat to see it unfold, esp. w/ the Vision popping up as a interstellar car alarm. &, yeah, the portrayal of the Soviet superheroes as tweaked Frankensteins was a nice touch. I am all for WE's mixture of pop science and leisurely paced storytelling - it allows for great visuals (cf. the AWESOME panel in Ultimate Fantastic Four), and it also feels like I'm learning something. (Monkey, have you checked out the "N-Zone" arc in UFF? It's got a similar vibe to Ultimate Nightmare. Anhillius as alien Dracula!) (The names of the Ultimate minis suck, tho.)

Tom, when / where was the 2nd COMING OF GALACTUS story you mention?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 11 April 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

I always have a problem with the "Coming Of Galactus", as he is huge and that's gotta be more than your standard 10CC. I only hope he has a policy of not eating on what he has wanked on.

Coming Of Galactus re-tells:

- Marvels #3 (Big G surely least suitable character for Alex Ross ever! But the flaming sky and floating rock bits were really well done)
- Heroes Reborn (Can't remember much about this - G keeps winning and Doctor Doom keeps pressing the time travel reboot)
- Ultimate Nightmare

Surely the living shall envy the dead in that scenario, Pete.

there's also the silver surfer graphic novel lee and kirby did in the 70s which retells the galactus story, only without the FF! never come across this one tho.

I'm liking it...But that was probably always going to be the case.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Monday, 19 December 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

There's also the Moebius/Lee SILVER SURFER 2-issue miniseries. Not to mention the origin of the Silver Surfer himself which has Galactus drawn by John Bucema. JOHN BUCEMA!

BUSCEMA

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

When is comics going to follow B-movies by using people with the same last names as "A-Talent" to sell crap? Like some shitty T&A sci-fi movie I saw many years ago, which starred Carl Sheen, Rupert Stallone, Waylon Brando and, um, Jerry Mathers.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

You say "Buscema" and I say "posting too early."

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 19 December 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

that "heroes reborn" version sounds pretty sweet!

dave k, Monday, 19 December 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I'm just old school, but if the artist that's on board to draw the entire series could make it through the entire series, I'll be a happy fanboy.

Oooh, I'd like to see Boo Cook working on this.

When is comics going to follow B-movies by using people with the same last names as "A-Talent" to sell crap?

Comics have been putting people called "Moore" on the cover with no first name for about twenty years. ABC is even leaving the Steve off Steve Moore on the INSIDE now! See also Harris' hiring Steven Grant to dialogue over Millar & Morrison's abandoned Vampirella plots so they could put GRANT MORRISON MILLAR ARTIST INKER on the covers. Possibly see the ease with which a hopeless anti-talent like Jim Lee got hired at Marvel in the early '90s.

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 19 December 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

And we've had the Authority with MORRISON on the covers for the last while. Is no one going to suggest that this is how Sal Buscema got so much work? Of course Stan Lee's actual brother went under the real name rather than switching to Lee.

i have such a weakness for "surprise XXXXX" stories

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

How many times has Ellis recycled the hybrid/alien/cybernetic warriors thing now? I mean, it was already there when he arrived with Stormwatch, but he had that going in Excalibur before that and had a Global Frequency there too... not to mention the Desolation Jones angle with a government testing on humans.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

having never read any of that stuff... it's all cool with me!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 23:07 (nineteen years ago)

How many times have funny books recycled the hybrid/alien/cybernetic warriors thing now?
