Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale

I just read Long Halloween and I found it an eye-rolling mess. The dialogue would veer into awkward exposition and would sometime force Batman to talk strained "toughguy"-speak. And Sale's physiques for Batman and Catwomen are hideous. It's funny that I hated it so much, but forced myself to finish it until early morning. So um I thought these guys were supposed to be good?

Shut up.

Good answer!

I enjoyed most of Long Halloween, but you've spurred me into rereading it with an eye cast at the dialogue--yeah, this is the same guy who has run the parallel int. monologue into the ground over in Superman/Batman, so I can believe there's some awkward shit in there.
I think I have another Loeb/Sale Batman trade, but I can't remember which one. Their Daredevil: Yellow was pretty sweet.
And I think because of his, um, licentious take on anatomy, Sale often works much better as a pin-up or cover artist.

They did some Batman: Legends story about a Zorro-type (Blades?) that I remeber being pretty great.

Oh yeah! I read that AGES and AGES ago. It was collected along with a Bat-mite story and another one in a cool little trade.

Huge plot-hole stupid twist ending, BOO.

Leeenge de Bruijn (Leee), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Was it Jason Todd again?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

re: Long Halloween, I only wish it were Jason Todd!

Long Halloween seemed to me a loong excuse to get as many Tim Sale pinups and splashes into one series as possible.

But I liked Daredevil Yellow, too. And A Superman For All Seasons.

Spiderman Blue is a bit by the numbers for me, though. Generally, even the stuff f theirs that I like all feels a bit "so what'? There is no sense of urgency to these retold stories, it all seems contrived.

Didn't James Robinson write "Blades"? Which would explain why its better than most of Loeb's stuff.

I've got a few issues of their Challengers of the Unknown series, and I remember that it was pretty good...

David N (David N.), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Robinson did write "Blades"!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 14 April 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

maybe it was solo sale. he did some grendel too?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 14 April 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

He was on Grendel. I think Dark Horse reprinted his run (w/ new material).

Amazon was Seagle & Sale I think

I re-read the first chapter of Long Halloween last night (and then switched if for some groovy Batman in the Seventies action), and was similarly put off by some of Sale's Bat-Physiques. I was expecting him to go the other way, but Batman's musculature was hyper-articulated and looked hideous!

Huk-L, Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad I ruined something for you!

Leeenge de Bruijn (Leee), Friday, 15 April 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

James Robinson is normally pretty awfule, right?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 15 April 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Actually, not really! But let us save that for:

James Robinson: S&D
