Best Current Vertigo Title - Summer 2009 Edition

Unwritten, Mike Carey's new book, is really good. So what else from Vertigo's current line-up is worth reading? I like Air, and of course the Fables stuff is classic (despite troublesome Willingham politics), and sometimes check out DMZ. How about all this other stuff tho? Was it a mistake to drop Northlanders? Could Greek Street + Sweet Tooth possibly be good, or are they both going to be as awful as they sound? Whatever happened to Un-Men, The Vinyl Underground, and Army@Love? (Not that I liked any of them.)

Wow--I just realised I'm not reading any Vertigo at the moment, now that 100 Bullets has finished, Might have to use this poll to get back into it.

That "Viking single combat" issue of Northlanders really was pretty ace. But I'm really liking Young Liars now... just in time for it to end two months from now. Oh well.

That Fables/Jack of Fables/Literals crossover that's happening at the moment looks mighty entertaining too, although I haven't gotten to read any of it yet.

Scalped is great in trades; I think single issues would drive me batty. The first few DMZ trades are good as well, but I've been kind of lukewarm on it as a continuing series. Unknown Soldier is not as good as all the hype but is solid. Gave up on Fables, Hellblazer and Northlanders a while ago.

I gave up on Fables after the great war saga thing, but then picked it up in the middle of this cross-over thing and it hasn't disappointed. Very entertaining. For what it's worth, I voted for Air which is the most ambitious of the bunch IMHO

Def. Air, although I haven't actually read most of the rest. Fuck Willingham.

I've broadcast my current fondness for YOUNG LIARS elsewhere. Nice to see a series that so willingly goes off the rails in terms of tonal control and doesn't aspire to be anything like a cable tv series.

I've read the first two trades of JACK OF TRADES and enjoyed, but felt no compulsion to pursue further.

I'm currently reading Air, Fables, and Young Liars in floppies, plus Scalped and Northlanders in trade. Young Liars is pretty great, but I think Air is the one I'm most excited about these days.

I am only reading Unknown Soldier and Unwritten, and could easily drop both of those. Where did all go wrong?

DMZ- I really like the first few trades, but the last one about the election didn't really catch with me. The cover design and look of the book is always pretty sharp. It is definitely a book about setting as much as plot.

Northlanders- I caught up and have been reading this one monthly. I really like Northlanders and wish there were more historically set comics.

Scalped- I think this title has gotten better as it has gone on. It is a really dark and angry comic. I have to figure it is a bit over half way through the whole series, as they finally filled out the back story on the res. chief/main gangster. There is still some background to fill out on a few other characters (especially the FBI agent), so those will probably be a couple of arcs and then a couple of arcs to tie and build the thing to a conclusion.

Young Liars- This comic is just insane and it is sad that there isn't enough sales to finish it out the way it was planned. Totally different vibe, but if you like something like The Invisibles, I would think there could be some similar appeal as it is just as druggy and strange.

That's all I am reading.

Air looks interesting, may have to invest in the first trade.

The artist is better at ugly old folks than pretty young folks. So am I, so I am sympathetic. But it is a kind of a problem.
