Was it?

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Sunday, 24 April 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

yes, actually

i was thinking of starting a thread on it a while ago: somehow linking it with this thread about lethem and the new comics mood: because of how it uses the reader's knowledge of the fantastic four to do this end-of-the-50s story in a way that really isn't about comics fans not growing up

but i couldn't really explain it; also i wanted people to tell me about his other comics.

blount links his diary at salon in another thread i can't get up: he's teaching a how-to college course on comic books, which is good, i think.

oh and also the thing with unstable molecules is that i can't see marvel having published it anytime in the past, although i'm kinda a neophyte & could be wrong

it and the golem's mighty swing both feel kind of like the first fifty pages of very, very long novels, but this might just be me. has he actually done anything else?

above and below came out last year, collects 'the revival' and 'hundreds of feet below daylight'. i thought it was pretty great.

j blount (papa la bas), Sunday, 24 April 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

he also had a miniseries from Fanta in the '90s called The Cereal Killings, about product mascots being killed off or something (never read it).

The Comics School is offereing a week long course this summer...

http://www.cartoonstudies.org/summer/index.html

Sturm can is teaching it w/Steve Bissette and James Kochalka.

It's open to the public. If anyone wants to take the course (I'm thinking about it but am wondering of my $650 might be better spent on a trip to Amsterdam), you can stay at my place rent free! ... As long as you're not a killer. And as long as you tell me everything you learned in the class.

White River Jct. and the Upper Valley area are really cool! Come visit!

Vermont Girl (Vermont Girl), Monday, 25 April 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

The Cereal Killings is great, and a far superior first effort than Ware's Floyd Farland or Clowes on Psycho (etc etc), but easily eclipsed by Sturm's history trilogy and Unstable Molecules.
