Face front, true believers! In this grifing thread, we're gonna separate the bastiches from the poozers. Nuff said, bub.

Huk-L, Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh bloody nass.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

In the post-Neal Adams Green Lantern/Green Arrow series, Denny O'Neill had GA say things like "I'll bet dollars to donuts..." and "I'll bet diamonds to dirt..." and "I'll bet gems to germs..."

Huk-L, Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Holy cowchips, Huk-L!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

"Great Scott!" vs "Moons of Krypton!"

Huk-L, Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh god Wolverine circa the 80s and 90s to thread to bore the bloody pants off of every fanboy with his onanistic odes to his grimey grit.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

The Big Two should hire Fred Willard to create new catchphrases for all heroes. I suggest this because I want the Hulk to start saying, "WHA HAPPEN?"

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

"Great Rao!" - this is my favourite catchphrase.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

"Wha happen" single-handedly redeemed Fred Willard for me.

Huk-L, Thursday, 28 April 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

"WHO TOOK MY WITTLE WED WAGON" has Batman written all over it.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

"Avengers Assemble" never even made sense in the first place.

Although I think the all-time champion of this one is "Hawkaaaaaaa!"

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

"Defenders Defenestrate!"

(really, they do!)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

What was it that Nova said? I remember it was mind-bogglingly stupid, like along the lines of "GREAT CEASAR'S GHOST!!!"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Does Wonder Woman still say "Great Hera!" and such all the time? And surely Aquaman must have had some good Atlantis/fish related ones?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

I'm imagining Aquaman shouting "STINKY TUNA BAG!" and it's giving me giggletits.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 28 April 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

"By Neptunes Trident!"

Huk-L, Thursday, 28 April 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Oh my stars and garters.
I'm the best there is at what I do. Bub.
Did he actually ever say that, or was it just in his head?

It always bugged me the way the "International" characters in Claremont's X-Men spoke with handy foreign words scattered throughout their sentences. Banshee : Boyo. Colossus : Tovarisch. Gambit : Mon cherie, etc. Nightcrawler, Moira McTaggart, too.

Best catchphrase was Luke Cage : "Christmas."

David N (David N.), Friday, 29 April 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

SWEET CHRISTMAS!

kit, Friday, 29 April 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

Louisiana's International now?

Huk-L, Friday, 29 April 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

The scare quotes mean he's fibbing.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

Re: "...surely Aquaman must have had some good Atlantis/fish related ones?
-- Jordan (jordan...), April 28th, 2005"

He used to say "Suffering shad!" a lot; or maybe "Sufferin' shad!". One of those.

I think shad's a fish of some sort

David Simpson (David Simpson), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

I checked: it's a fish: "The American shad or white shad, Alosa sapidissima, is the best-known of the six species of shad and herring that swim in the Chesapeake Bay. This shad is a handsome fish, with a metallic blue-green back that lightens to silver along the sides and has a black spot at the shoulder, with several smaller spots trailing behind. The American shad can reach a length of 30 inches, and is the largest—and considered the most delicious to eat–of all the shads."

Lots more on shads at http://www.chesapeakebay.net/info/american_shad.cfm, where I got the above quote

David Simpson (David Simpson), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

BLUE BLAZES!!!!

The Ghost of God I Hate Nova (Dan Perry), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

My hometown holds a SHAD DERBY every year! It's a tradition! (It sucks.) (I'm biased, tho.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Do you put the winning shad on a shad rack?

The Ghost of Weak Beasties References A Go Go (Dan Perry), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

I SAID HOWDY
HE SAID HI

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Zarjaz!

Andrew J L, Friday, 29 April 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, didn't Green Lantern's pal Tom "Pieface" Kalmaku used to say something like "Jumping Fishhooks!"

Huk-L, Friday, 29 April 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

DA FUG!

The Yellow Kid, Friday, 29 April 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

If we could only include cartoons, he'd own this thread:

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

That S really doesn't line up with the CRAPPY, which is fitting.

Huk-L, Friday, 29 April 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

eight months pass...
YES JUMPING FISH HOOKS!

PIEFACE tossed in some other one referencing the Aurora Borealis, but I can't remember it in light of JUMPING FISH HOOKS!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

not really a catchphrase, but whilst reading showcase JLA I was prepared to slap Aquaman if he referred to his "finny friends" one more time.

Mark C (Markco), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Just in case the other thread gets swallowed by Alex (David R.) Luthor:

I actually like this one, but I've noticed that in both the Superman and Green Arrow Showcase volumes, "Great guns!" gets a lot of play.

"IMPERIUS REX!!!"—Subby

veronica moser (veronica moser), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

"Titans together" is cringeworthy not only in and of itself, but also as GIANT WINKING BROTHER EYE.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Re: "...surely Aquaman must have had some good Atlantis/fish related ones?

Also: GREAT GUPPIES!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

That was Namor who said 'Sufferin Shad!' He also shouted 'Great Gar!' and I'm pret-ty sure 'Holy Halibut!' as well. And then he caught the Shakespeare off Thor, but didn't have all those Norse Gods to swear with so all he ever shouts is 'IMPERIUS REX' as if we're meant to be impressed.

Vic F (Vic Fluro), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

I always thought Great Rao! and Great Moons of Krypton were sort of weird because they make superman seem like such a poseur. I mean he grew up in Kansas, right? It's like people who do yoga and start speaking with an Indian accent and riding elephants. Okay maybe people don't do that.

kenchen, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Also, in Jimmy Corrigan, he says "Chiggers!" a lot.

And in World's Funniest, Evan Dorkin kills of Perry who goes to heaven and meets and the exasperated ghost of Great Caesar!

kenchen, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I always thought Great Rao! and Great Moons of Krypton were sort of weird because they make superman seem like such a poseur. I mean he grew up in Kansas, right?

THAT Superman I think had a few years on Krypton as a toddler, and Super-Race-Memory etc.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Does he still do it? I think I've seen it in recent DC comics, like JLA.

Hey, did you see the Sandman: Endless nights trade? I mean, whatever you say about Sandman, it was cool seeing Rao as a character.

kenchen, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

No way!
The only Sandman I've ever read was an issue set during the French revolution where Johanna Constantine (which is not a French name in any dreamworld fantasy) carries Sandman (or maybe his son?)'s head around for a while.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Well, whatever you think of Sandman (it was my favorite comic in high school, but now I think it's brilliant, maximalist, pretentious, badly written), you should read this in the store. I think I already gave away the gimmick, but Gaiman's very good at doing interesting things w/ mainstream DC characters. Actually, probably all the British invasion authors are (I feel) better playing with other people's toys than w/ their own. (Controversial statement?) There's a story by Frank Quitely too!

I think Johanna Constantine was duchess of Pembroke or something and just adventuring in gay Paree!

kenchen, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:00 (twenty years ago)

I got pretty sick of Storm's "Goddess!" and Nightcrawler's "Mein Gott!" after a while. I guess catchphrases are easier than actual character development.

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't Collossus constantly invoking the spirit of Lenin? Or did I make that up? I know for a fact he said 'tovarich' more than was stricitly neccessary (for Claremont nationality=character).

Hahahahaha I clicked on this thread to bitch about Nova. Um.

Dan (One-Note) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:23 (twenty years ago)

That's a beautifully drawn panel.

chap who would dare to no longer work for the man (chap), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:25 (twenty years ago)

A beautifully drawn panel ABOUT LENIN.

I wonder if X-Men Unlimited would be in the running for a story where Colossus finds himself torn between Marxist and Leninist doctrine! it is a tale I would call "This Colossus -- This Commie!!"

Vic Incognito (Vic Fluro), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:40 (twenty years ago)

"Must resolve inner conflict before I face the menace of... Kapit-Al-Ism, devourer of proles!"

chap who would dare to no longer work for the man (chap), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:46 (twenty years ago)

there's a classic claremont xmen comic where colossus gets brainwashed by Arcade pretending to be the politiburo. As a result, he changes his name from Colossus to COMRADE and beats up the X-Men!

kenchen, Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:47 (twenty years ago)

His name was The Proletariat! it was ace.
