Uh, was it supposed to be? Doesn't politicizing ALL black characters amount to one-dimensional storytelling?

1) Why do (white) people think racists only exist in the South?
2) Does he not have an editor?
3) Judging work from previous eras by the standards of the current era without understanding the moral climate of those bygone eras is sixth-grade critical analysis at best.

Although its better not to get too theoretical here [though if you are interested in this line of argument, take a look at my article on NASCAR and economic class in Studies in Popular Culture (October 2002)], the larger point is perhaps that there is racism and then there is racism.

The country boys are leaving the sport but isn't it interesting that the ride NASCAR takes us for remains "white knuckle" in every sense of the word?

I wouldn't press/argue this point too strongly, but would mention that (IMO) the history of Asian representation in Marvel comics – as opposed to recent controversies involving the movies – is more slightly complex than implied in that HuffPo piece, or the Gizmodo article linked therein (cf. Shang-Chi, for starters).

...But point totally taken that it's *today's* Marvel that is both pulling the tone-deaf movie moves, and apparently shrugging its shoulders at this guy's appalling history.
