RONIN HOOD?

tom west (thomp), Saturday, 7 May 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

I got a huge haul of around 30 free comics today, INCLUDING Ronin Hood. It was like christmas

Slumpman (Slump Man), Saturday, 7 May 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

I got my haul like 2 weeks cuz I did a big feature on it. The Flight Primer and the Toronto Comic Arts Festival books are my favourites. D&Q's The Adventures of Paul is also sweet.

I reviewed all of this year's at http://www.salon.com/books/feature/2008/05/02/free_comics_2008/ .

Short version: go for All-Star Superman, Love and Capes, Marvel Adventures Iron Man/Hulk/Spider-Man, Hellboy, Neotopia, maybe Comics Go Hollywood and Gyro Gearloose. Bring a kid.

I hit two comic stores. The one is Astoria was totally laid back and said I could take one of each. The one in midtown was crazy and you had to get in line and personally request 5 comics. They were really nice though.

I got: Incredible Hulk/Iron Man, Ignatz, Owly, Amelia Rules, Caroona Palooza, Ironman/Hulk/Spiderman, Bongo, Shonen Jump, Transformers, Superman, EC, Tiny Titans, Walt Disney's Gyro Gearloose, and Jughead. Also: an Ironman poster/calendar, Chronicles of Narnia poster, and a Wall-e poster. My students better appreciate these!

Picked up that EC sampler - what a bargain! You get a beautiful Alex Toth/Kurtzman war story, a Johnny Craig werewolf strip, an Al Feldstein Sci-Fi and, best of all, one of Wally Wood's most intense and fetishistic crime twisters - superb!

eleven months pass...

What's supposed to be good in the '09 selection?

O Bama, Up Yours! (The Yellow Kid), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 04:20 (sixteen years ago)

No big surprises. I'd go for Avengers, Savage Dragon, Love & Capes, Nancy & Melvin Monster. Maybe the Owly if that's your bag, maybe Blackest Night. I'd be more excited about the Love & Rockets thing if it weren't just excerpts from the forthcoming TPB.

Douglas, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

... forthcoming TPB?

thomp, Friday, 10 April 2009 13:13 (sixteen years ago)

I assume he means the annual format that got started last year

Nhex, Friday, 10 April 2009 13:18 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, exactly.

(And is there anyone else here who reads Love & Capes?)

Douglas, Saturday, 11 April 2009 03:34 (sixteen years ago)

what is?

If Snotboogie always stole the money, why'd you let him play? (Dr. Superman), Saturday, 11 April 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

DC's putting out an exclusive "Blackest Night" prelude if you're riding the GL Johns jock.

Manuel Doritos (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 11 April 2009 17:48 (sixteen years ago)

remember when preludes were shorted than what they preluded?

three weeks pass...

Bump!

Off to the Sheffield Space Centre. I normally make an obligatory real purchase but i am sort of broke atm...

Slumpman, Saturday, 2 May 2009 09:05 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, and to answer Dr. Superman's question, Love & Capes is a sitcom-ish thing about superheroes and their love lives. Very sweet, and I find the visual style really appealing: http://www.loveandcapes.com/ Plus he puts out like three issues a year, and one of them is always the Free Comic Book Day issue, which is considerate.
