I have finally read A GENTLEMAN'S GAME (spoilers etc.)

It's really good! The end was a wee bit anticlimactic, but that's because I had in mind the gut-punching last panel from Saddlebags.

Rucka's prose is serviceable, but the story and dialogue were pretty mentalist once things got going.

Hooray!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

I remember the ending of the novel, but, uh, what how did Saddlebags end again?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Another negative that did NOTHING to detract from the awesomeness: Wallace's death, for me, was pretty goddamn apparent.

Crocker/Cheng sizzled more than the comics!

Landau! Borovsky! (I kind of hope that we'll get a Declassified of Landau.)

xpost - Crocker told Tara that she bollocked up the mission, and then she goes into the obligatory shower scene with a bottle of wine!

Le (Leee), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Haha, oh yeah!

You're right, Wallace was only there to die, but it still hit hard. And the Isrealis were awesome.

The most interesting part of reading it may have been how my mind would shift back and forth between visualizing the comic versions of the characters and the 'novel' versions that I would have pictured if the comic had never existed.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 16 May 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

The "terrorist's perspective" parts were alright, a good try at least, but the Crocker parts were my favorite, i.e. the hot bureaucratic action and the trust dynamic between him and Tara.

Hm. Either Rucka is incredibly prescient, or terrorists are incredibly predictable.

Leeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 8 July 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

I didn't want to mention it on any of the other threads, but this is exactly what I thought of yesterday.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 July 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Uhhh, I still haven't read it but I've had it since last Xmas. I actually picked it up from my bookshelf just last night, read the blurb and thought...no.

I Named Veal (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 July 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Is this really good? I mean, really? Or have I just been reading only dud Rucka comics? (i.e. OMAC and Supes)

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Saturday, 9 July 2005 04:33 (twenty years ago)

The prose is serviceable, but the story is full of compelling twists and turns, and the novel is in fact part of the canonical storyline of Q&C.

Leeeeeee (Leee), Saturday, 9 July 2005 04:57 (twenty years ago)

Chuck, I love Queen & Country. It is one of only 4/5 titles I read with any regularity.

I'm reading this now and really enjoying it.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Have you ever read the comic, Adam?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

I got it out from the Library last week. I haven't opened it yet. I also got KEEPER!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 22 August 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Have you ever read the comic, Adam?

Yes, I read the first 5 tpbs

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Great!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Greg told me (and a roomful of others) that there's a preview of the next book in the paperback version of AGG, and that it's a "Punch Greg Rucka"-worthy preview.

I finished it. it was good, I thought. Are they still planning a Q&C movie? I think I like Crocker, even though he's a BASTARD.

And I do find Rucka's use of British-isms and customs fairly accurate. He gets the weather down very well!

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 September 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Some of his best friends are British!

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 22 September 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

But he's never actually been there, I think!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 September 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

I think he has! I remember asking him and his wife about this very topic.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 22 September 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

You're probably right, that's just what Carla Sp33d McNe1l said.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 22 September 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe with some of the detail about Regent's Park Terrace and Vauxhall and Shoreditch that he'd never been to London (not that he rendered them so vividly, bu I BELIEVED that Tara might live in that part of Camden, for example) but he could be a very voracious reader of guidebooks I suppose.

There was quite a brave use of "mind your own" even though that is really only something said by grandmothers or soap opera actresses.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

I think I've read everything now except DECLASSIFIED or whatever it's called.

Cristal Waters (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 September 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

If you like Crocker, you should read Declassified. It was the first one I read, and so I still think of Crocker as the main character of Q&C.

The Yellow Kid, Friday, 23 September 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Me too, exactly.

RUCKA: STOP FUCKING WITH TARA FFS

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 21 October 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Was it just me, or did Tara nearly kill someone with no more than a rolled up magazine in AGG?

Leeeeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 27 October 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

She's the MacGyver of ass-kicking.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 27 October 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Do you remember what page/chapter that was? I'm totally stealing it for my magnum opus.

Leeeeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 27 October 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Dude, paper cuts are HARSH.

I think it was around Chapter 30ish. It was during her return trip to that place where the bad stuff went down.
