I came here really expecting to find a Phonogram thread

I have read exactly one issue (#6 of the second series, came out yesterday) and I am not sure what to think of it at all. I might hate it but I still want to read more.

I mean, I might love it too, I need to read the first trade and get in the world a little more, or something.

The trade (Rue Britannia) is good. I mean, come on, Luke Haines as that angel from the Inferno, what's not to like? The art is nice, and there is a generally entertaining feel to it.

I'm not so mad on the second series (of which I have only seen two episodes). The stories seem a bit bitty, and colour does not really suit the art.

thus say I.

It's enjoyed by friends of mine with otherwise quite reasonable taste, but I've always found it a bit grating and try-hard. The writer is apparently a top-notch bloke, though, according to a friend who's met him.

Luke Haines, 'Das Capital'

I remember reading the first issue and was pretty turned off, similar to what Chuck said. (See also: FreakAngels.) Kind of a shame because I do like Gillen's writing about video games.

I find the first bit of Rue Britannia quite affecting, all the stuff about the friend who no longer likes music and her ghost etc.

don't know anything about this; anybody got a link?

I just finished rue britannia and liked it, so maybe I'll pick up some more issues of the second series. It might be one of those that reads better as a trade, the single issue I got had practically nothing it it, it seemed like. Other than a lot of going on about Dexy's Midnight Runners (which was pretty funny really).

[so the deal with me is that I'm getting back into comics after being out of the stores for 10 years or so and I'm just kind of plowing through lots of stuff old and new, it was funny to read Phonogram and realize it was on Image; the thing I read before this was also on Image but it's the Image I remember from high school--DEATHMATE, it was such a hot mess that I couldn't put it down, thank god it was only a 32-pager.]

The whole transformation of Image into a leftfield indie publisher is strange.

I read two of the Singles Club, and liked the second more than the first, partly because it was about Dexys rather than some lamer indie band, and partly because it refernced the previous issue in a way that made me think the whole collection would do that thing of showing you the same events from loads of different points of view.

Just picked up a few of these (Singles Club). One of my ex-housemates does guest art in one of them! Brilliant.

It *could* be insufferable (I mean I'd still enjoy it) without the laid-back glossary etc. It kind of distances some of the characters from the writer (a *bit*).

Still missing a few from the series, tried to get the trade but left it too long and it's sold out on Amazon so just picking up the individuals when I find em.

two months pass...

I got the second tpb and the single issue I had picked up before makes a LOT more sense. I think the first is still better though. Would really really like to hear more ilxor opinions on it!

I wrote about it over at Techland: http://techland.com/2010/03/26/emanata-one-chord-wonders/

^ agree with the point about the lyrics. I always wish the issues were longer, too!
