A new Gotham Central trade, hallelujah!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 23 May 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Flash, LSH and also the Gotham Central trade - no stinking chapbooks for me!

Mark C (Markco), Monday, 23 May 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Flash, Gotham Central trade!, Outsiders, OMAC & Captain America!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Also, I think Batman #840 and Green Lantern #1 are supposed to ship this week, and you bet your ass I'll be buying those.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Return Of Donna Troy #1: In case the big "COLLECTOR'S ITEM" label on the cover didn't warn you, this is a giant snoozer.

But Flash and Green Lantern (and Batman) are great.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Return Of Donna Troy #1: In case the big "COLLECTOR'S ITEM" label on the cover didn't warn you, this is a giant snoozer.

Awwww. Even the art?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 May 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

The art is sorta nice, if you like scenes of the Titans of Myth intercut with Tamaranean warriors and don't mind a bazillion word balloons over top of everything.

Huk-L, Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Runaways = !!!!

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

MAR051912D SECRET WAR FROM FILES OF NICK FURY $3.99

MAR052336C SECRET WAR THE SENATE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE INVESTIGATES WHY THE FUCK THIS SERIES ALWAYS SHIPPED SO LATE: I MEAN FUCK IT'S NOT LIKE IT DEPENDED ON COMING OUT CONCURRENT WITH OTHER MARVEL BOOKS, SO WHEN YOU'VE GOT SOME DAMN DUTCH MASTER PAINTING THE THING WHY DON'T YOU JUST WAIT UNTIL HE'S DONE? THERE'S NO WAY YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD SHIP ON TIME CHRIST THE STORY WASN'T EVEN ALL THAT INTERESTING TO BEGIN WITH $5.99

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

That reads almost like a Star Wars crawl. Only you forgot to begin with: WAR! SECRET! SECRET WAR!

Huk-L, Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

EPISODE VII:
BUY ALL TWENTY COLLECTORS CUPS
YOU SUBLITERATE LEMMINGS

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

EPISODE VD:
THE CLAP! THE CLAP HAS BROKEN OUT ACROSS THE REPUBLIC!

Huk-L, Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Batman #640: Slow burning killer of an issue. With Red Hood making friendly with Onyx and Batman quizzing Superman on what the fuck is up with all these people coming back from the dead. Probably my favourite issue of Winick-writing, the dialogue & characterizations are tighter than Alfred's butt. No Mahnke/Nguyen loveliness, though. But fill-in penciller Somebody Lee (but not Pat or Jim or Jae) is okay, though uneven. There are a couple of really, really brilliant panels though.

Return of Donna Troy #1: I'm Donna Troy. No, I'm Troia. No, I'm Troy. No, I'm Wonder Girl. I'm a Titan of Myth. No, I'm a Teen Titan. I'm gonna talk about my memories for-fucking-ever and bore the pants off Huk with absolutely ZERO chance of getting back into that sexy scoop-neck Go-Go outfit from the 70s.

Green Lantern #1 (Pacheco cover, if you must know): Cool. Cool. Cool. Hal's back in the Air Force, but not flying. Yet. Except for when he is flying. Makes up for the NON-events (plotwise, gotta gotta love the Darwyn Cooke Gil Kane stuff though) of GL Secret Files. Yellow weaknesses are for pussies. Bad guy aliens and something from the past!

the Flash #222 Best Geoff Johns action issue ever. I like Johns, I like him a lot, but he usually drops the ball on issues like this, where all the cool tension he's been building up finally explodes (witness, The Secret of Barry Allen). But it's cover-to-cover chaos as the Rogues continue their war, sides are switched, brainwashes are reversed, the corpse of Captain Boomeran, pere speaks, and Captain Cold should change his name to Captain Stone Cold.

The OMAC Project #2: The art stinks. I think it's the inker's fault. Too thick. Greg Rucka proves he's got the DCU down with Identity Crisis follow up, Booster Gold with b-a-l-l-s, and a big fat smooch for Batman.

Day of Vengeance #2: This is Fables Bill Willingham, not Robin Bill Willingham. Weird, chatty, cheeky & human. Ragman gets played by Enchantress and pwned by Blue Devil (who's sort of a douchebag), and Detective Chimp is the coolest ape around. The art is pretty sweet.

Outsiders #whatever: After learning last issue that the traitor was Shift, now we learn (well, we learned last week in Teen Titans) that the traitor is actually Indigo, which should be no surprise to anyone. Indigo, revealed as Brainiac 8 (have we ever seen Brainacs 3, 4, 6 & 7?) (or 8-12?), kicks everyone's ass. It looked like she was gonna kill Grace, which would have been awesome, but everyone survived. Indigo returns to her master, Braniac 1, who's hanging out with Luthor and his kid, Superboy. It's like Eight Is Enough, with Luthor as Dick Van Patten.

Huk-L, Thursday, 26 May 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

OMG SPOILERS MY EYES ARGH

j/k; the Outsiders thing was spoiled, but I'm on the verge of cutting bait anyway. Suck for 'Morpho, tho.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 May 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

DUDE, it's the freaking cover shot!

Huk-L, Thursday, 26 May 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

OMG DC! YOU SUCK!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 May 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm gonna drop Outsiders too. Who am I kidding? I don't like Nightwing!
Teen Titans isn't doing it for me anymore either. Needs more Time Travel stories. I think maybe from now on, I'm only going to read Time Travel comics.
JSA, I'm losing interest in too.

Huk-L, Thursday, 26 May 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Some Johns fan YOU are. ;)

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 May 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh, it was too hot an affair to last, and we both knew it.

Huk-L, Thursday, 26 May 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

(plus, I keep adding Marvel titles to my pull list)

Huk-L, Thursday, 26 May 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

IT'S OKAY OUTSIDERS, I STILL LOVE YOU!

The reveal disappointed me a bit, though.

Day of Vengeance #1 was one of those ones where it could've gone either way, cool or suckass, (despite the monkey), so I'm glad to hear #2 is solidly on the Fables end of the Willingham spectrum.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 26 May 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it was flirting with suck for the first half (Atomiclipso!), then veered towards neatness w/ the whole bar scene.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 May 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to think that BW was just pushing out the first part of the issue (w/ Eclipso) so he could get to the bit he really wanted to write (tho I think there's an online interview where he said he had fun writing the one-sided dialogue) (like he'd say otherwise) ("gee, yeah, that first part of the issue, I totally mailed it in, KA-CHING style; the crap w/ the ape and the hot witch, that's my jam.")

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 May 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

Also, I haven't read Captain America #6 yet...

Huk-L, Thursday, 26 May 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Legion, Milligan X-Men, and Ultimates 2 for me.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Superman #217: OH YEAH GRATUITOUS PRE-INFINITE (finite?) CRISIS CROSSOVER! Actually, it's an OMAC PROJECT x-over, as the Omac-O-Tron shows up and kicks Superman around for a couple of pages. In the meantime, new writer (and Smallville writer) Mark Verheiden sets about re-establishing Supes' status quo. There must be a memo going around where all Superman writers are being told to show Clark & Lois getting all lovey-dovey, because, yet again, we see those wacky kids getting jiggy w/ it. And there's some stuff involving a village and a new Fortress of Solitude and a flood and Ed Benes' bootylicious drawrings. Not bad (and not just because of CLEAVAGE).

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 May 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

Ultimates: lots of fun. We meet the Ultimate Defenders, and they are pretty much the Legion of Substitute Heroes of Ultimate Marvel...

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 27 May 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

Oh, hey, when's the Giffen/DeMatteis Defenders coming out?

Huk-L, Friday, 27 May 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

I think starting in June.

Speaking of - the last issue of I Can't Believe It's the Justice League Classified! Pathos! In a story about flipping burgers in hell! The heck!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 May 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's why I nominated Guy Gardner in the best character poll.

Huk-L, Friday, 27 May 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

CITY OF TOMORROW #2

This is actually quite a good Chaykin book, imagine it as a cross between Black Kiss, American Century and his Challs book and you're most of the way there. A pleasant surprise. Not as majestic as the first Flaggs, but getting there.

FLASH #222

The Rogue War is really hotting up, what with the Top going round setting all the people FREE, but OMG! Dead Boomerang speaks! Lots of fites! THE LONG THREATENED RETURN OF ZOOM! Don't miss this, funny book fans.

HELLBLAZER #208

Why do I buy this? (Actually, I know the answer, it's for someone else) Blah blah blah, I'm in Hell, blah blah blah Nergal blah blah blah. Shite.

LEGION OF SUPER HEROES #6

ACTUAL PLOT INSTEAD ON PIECEMEAL STORIES SHOCKAH! Superb stuff though, I see it all going wrong very soon. Great character in... oh, what's his name...

LOSERS #24

The Roque/Max doublecross is becoming more complex and there's a huge bit FITE that sees Kennedy (? The computer guy) left behind. The ending is well done, even though you know you're being misled.

FANTASTIC FOUR #527

JMS starts, and lays his stall out well. It'll be interesting to see this one develop. You can only eat 17 hot dogs, apparently. (Ken C >>> The Thing, obv)

INCREDIBLE HULK #81

The Monster Island thing finishes (of sorts) with more bluffs, double bluffs and OH NO! twists than the whole of the previous Leader thread. Works, kind of.

ULTIMATES 2 #6

Admit it, who else is wondering if Hank pulled the same trick on Valkyrie as he did on Janet in that issue of Avengers. It would explain why he's wearing his helmet... and am I the only one that wonders how her skirt stays on? Marvel's best comic, still.

X-MEN #170

I can't remember a thing about this, which is never a good sign.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 27 May 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Captain America #6: What's that you say? My long-dead teen sidekick has returned from the grave all growed up? And he's working against me? And he's struck violently against my vilest nemesis? And a former love interest who's now working with a top secret extra-governmental espionage agency is back too? And there's a shadowy figure from a previously undisclosed part of my past seeking revenge on me? Holy Synchronicity, Batm--er, Cap!
But you know what? This story is kicking major ass anyway..

Huk-L, Friday, 27 May 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Has no one bought Runaways?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 27 May 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

I have, but I haven't read it yet - it's near the bottom of my HOLY CRAP-sized 2-week bundle.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

BTW - any of you folks that are liking Reggie Hudlin's work on Black Panther might want to skip his work on Marvel Knights Spider-Man Featuring A Superman Analogue And Some Questionable Scene Blocking From Billy Tan. The whimsy would be fine were it not for the really really really ungh-inspiring art. Mike Allred (or anyone that'd draw "!!!!" over a character's head) would've been PERFECT for this. Buy Marvel Team-Up instead. Or, y'know, some stuck-up artsy-fartsy thing, like Captain America.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

OR BUY SPIDER-MAN/HUMAN TORCH: I'm With Stupid, which is entirely the best comic book I've read in 32 years.

Huk-L, Friday, 27 May 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

I may be exaggerating, considering I'm 12 days short of 28.

Huk-L, Friday, 27 May 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

YOU'RE ONLY 28?

Holy fuck in a fuck basket. I thought you were MY age.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

What's your age?

Huk-L, Friday, 27 May 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

30. *SUPER BIG WINKY*

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 May 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, you are old.

Huk-L, Friday, 27 May 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Can it, punk! *FINGER*

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 May 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)
