Rumours of a new Spirit series...

...by Darwyn Cooke for DC!

I really hope this is true and that DC treats it sort of like their treating Kyle Baker's Plastic Man series, which seems to be very much hands-off and not too concerned with month-to-month sales, with a keen eye towards a long-term legacy of quality material and evergreen trades.

I hope the solicits are equally hands-off, too! I don't know what keeps DC from offering teaser synopses like, "Plastic Man's step-daughter is on a date! With a boy that came back from the dead! And Eel O'Brien ain't having that!", but bully for them and their well-worn thesaurus.

What are you talking about, here's the solicit for the July issue:
Part 3 of a 2-part story! No, really — we just had to stretch the story! Edwina's super-powered new boyfriend proves to be both a threat and a menace. Sounds like a keeper!

I seriously love the Mad solicitations. Hmm, I used to. Their February one was hilarious. It was all like, "If you read Mad, you probably don't have a Valentine." But it's offline now.
MAD isn't buying anything from the Warner Bros. Studio Store, while Donald Trump and diarrhea make a perfect pair in a double-sided pull-out poster. Plus, a tribute to legendary artist Kelly Freas, and two new Spy vs. Spy comic strips!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Whoa! All the solicits I've seen are totally plot-free! Yay DC!

Adding his two cents, Uslan said that if the film were being made a few decades years ago, there would be only once choice in his eyes: James Garner. Citing Garner, Uslan said that they’re looking to find someone with the same sensibility as Garner, along with good looks and a wry sense of humor.

SoooooOtm.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 19:56 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I would go see ANY Spirit movie, but I think this one has a much higher chance of being ENTERTAINING than a live action one directed by David Goyer or whoever.

Flash Gordon was the Spirit!!!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 9 February 2006 04:21 (twenty years ago)

Man, I've seen that, and I had no idea it was Flash Gordon. Of course, at the time I don't think I'd seen FG since it was in theaters. But still!

I had to do a ggl img src to find out who the hell Sam Jones is.

WHY YOU WANNA TREAT ME SO BAD

Boo.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 27 July 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

I'm trying to think of a team / creator that might keep me around for more Spirit shenanigans, but I can't think of any (spandex, indie, or otherwise) - the fill-in issue was a bit underwhelming, tho I enjoyed Kyle Baker's story.

David R., Friday, 27 July 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Moore & Gibbons?

(Me, I don't want anyone at all working on it. But their three stories were fun, you know?)

How about Mark Evanier and Sergio Aragones?

Looks like I'm not dropping this book after all.

Oilyrags, Monday, 10 September 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

I think I still am. Unless they get Jordi Bernet on art or something equally earth-shattering.

Matt M., Monday, 10 September 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

Could be interesting. They're certainly both equal to Cooke as comic storytellers, but it's an odd choice of character for them. Good that someone's giving them work, though.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 10 September 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

I was really hoping that Aragones would be doing the art :(

Dr. Superman, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 05:42 (eighteen years ago)

Me too. But I doubt they'd waste that writing team on some crapulous festering pile of mungbean-farts gripping a penknife, inkpad and potato.

Latest Spirit series - any good?

Flicked through an issue Wednesday - Hine can be brilliant and Moritat's good, but the coloring was awful, a mixture of muted and overly shiny that came across as just garish.

I can't wait to understand these arguments! (R Baez), Friday, 21 January 2011 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

Latest issue was really good, but was by far the best in ages.

I now have a complete set of the Spirit Archives. Yes, I am sad.

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Monday, 24 January 2011 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

I'd be sad too. But only that the thrill would be gone.

The thrill of the hunt, to clarify.
