I was thinking Baxter paper came in around 1982, 1984, and low-cost printing tech had improved a bunch before then. Also at that time BIFF POW SUPERHEROS WEREN'T JUST FOR KIDS ANYMORE, and so aside from fears of full-stops being lost in shitty printing (the reason it became stylistically entrenched), it became aesthetically desirable to write dialogue and captions in styles that didn't come off like you were shouting at retards... I'm sure most Marvel & DC comics would read better these days if they were suddenly forced to end every sentence with an exclamation point again!
