what's the best way of doing this?

just sayin, Monday, 12 July 2010 12:12 (fourteen years ago) link

CloudReader (free app on iTunes store) and CBR files, IMO. There are a few CBR apps, but this is the simplest/most usable I've found.

Thanks for the recommendation. This works pretty well. I was using bookman which is spotty at best.

If you get a CBR reader, will the Ipad allow you to upload p1rated CBRs?

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:23 (fourteen years ago) link

I use ComicZeal on the pad and read a whole bunch of CBRs just fine. I keep FLEX MENTALLO on my pad so it's close to me at all times.

Does ComicZeal still kind of lag when flipping pages? It seemed like it was a little better if you ran files through their app to "prepare" them, but other apps seem to just work better.

If you get a CBR reader, will the Ipad allow you to upload p1rated CBRs?

Seeing as no companies have released legal CBR files outside of those way far out of copyright, yeah!

I haven't noticed the page-flip lag too much, but then I imported my CBRs through the app so that might explain it.

are there sites yet that are optimized for ipad so that it appears to operate as an app for reading CBRs, but the CBRs are all stored on the site?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 17:06 (fourteen years ago) link

No clue whatsoever. I don't even know where to track down .cbr files online. All my old ones are from USEnet years ago.

five months pass...

I was bought one of these for Christmas -- I wouldn't say they're essential but it's certainly a fun toy. So -- does anyone have further recommendations for comic stuff? I've downloaded Cloud Readers, which seems totally fine, but is there anything better?

Have added my 2000AD Zenith cbrs, am psyched to finally read it for the first time in 20 years...

Is Cloud Reader still the best way to go for CBRs?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 29 August 2012 10:40 (twelve years ago) link

I've stuck with it so far. The front end isn't the prettiest, and wi-fi functionality is forgettable, but the all-important reading-the-comics part is really good. Super easy to use, keeps a consistent zoom level, and there's no annoying page-turning animation effects.

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 12:42 (twelve years ago) link

I use ComicBookLover, but I bought it years ago for my Mac. The free ipad version syncs with a slightly cumbersome app they made, but as I'm already in the ecosystem I didn't feel like going elsewhere. But I have no idea if the ipad app works on its own.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 12:47 (twelve years ago) link

Cloudreader works for me.

Nah, there's a better one that CloudReader now... don't have my iPad here, but I'll check what it is later if I can't find it now.

Here we go, ComicFlow: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/comicflow/id409290355?mt=8

Doesn't have problems with some files like I've had with CloudReaders, still free, and has some more functionality.

Just bought an Ipad Air, primarily, er, for music and comics reading. It's GREAT. Downloaded about 300 comics onto Comic Zeal in about 5 mins. Even the Marvel Unlimited app works well!

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

Just signed up for Marvel Unlimited to read on my laptop when I'm on the road. Will eventually be getting an ipad retina, I think, not sure when. At this point, the weight from dragging trades with me on the plane is too much.

Ha, although iPadding it is effectively swapping back pain from carrying for neck pain from reading

Neck pain is easier to "exercise out" though...

I've gotten some freebies off of Comixology, their panel to panel system works really well on the iPad even when the comic jumps to a full page or double truck spread.

Did this last week and had a good experience. Seriously considering getting one for an ereader

Comic Book Lover isn't compatible with iOS8 so I'm looking for a new reader. Needs to be relatively painless to transfer from mac to ipad, or at the very least can open stuff from dropbox or something.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 28 September 2014 01:55 (ten years ago) link

Comic Zeal works well for me, if you do't mind transferring on a cable via iTunes.

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 29 September 2014 11:33 (ten years ago) link

You can open files from Dropbox via ComicZeal too.
