I've not been around here for a while, but some probably remember me. Even farther back, I used to edit a comics fanzine called FA, which was well regarded in its day. I am toying with the idea of starting a website to do some of the same stuff - reviews, articles, news, interviews and so on. I'm looking for potential contributors and ideas. Can you email me from here now? If not, martin dot skidmores at btinternet dot com.

Hi Martin, nice to hear from you!
― Tuomas, Thursday, 5 August 2010 21:36 (fourteen years ago) link
I'd volunteer to contribute to your new site, but I don't think my English is professional enough.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 5 August 2010 21:37 (fourteen years ago) link
I have nothing to contribute except to say that over the years I have always enjoyed your posts here and at freaky trigger and your opinions about many of my favorite singers and writers such as Tyrone Davis and M. John Harrison. Good luck!

Hello, Martin. Long time no see.
I could possibly be talked into some writing but am woefully out of touch with what's hot and happening.

Just posting to welcome you back, if you're planning to stay. I missed you.

Let me add to the chorus of welcome backs! I'd be very interested in reading such a site, but am afraid my writing is probably not up to snuff.

Another very welcome back, and hope you stick around and post some.
If not a comics webszine, I imagine you could at least make some decent money off a dot com with the unabbreviated name of FA...

― Ward Fowler, Friday, 6 August 2010 07:55 (fourteen years ago) link
Thanks for the welcomes!
Tuomas, your English has always seemed good to me, and this is NOT going to be a professional enterprise.
Matt, I'm kind of out of touch myself, to be honest. Obviously if you don't read comics at all now, you are less likely to have anything to contribute, but don't let a lack of the big picture deter you.
EZ Snappin, I have no idea what your writing is like beyond that post, but I am keener on people who have interesting things to say than those who write beautifully (though both is best, of course).
Don't know who ACKACKETC is, but I dropped the full name very quickly when I took over FA, since, as you suggest, Fantasy Advertiser sounds less like a comic fanzine than a contact mag.
One final point: I am still just pondering this, but it is looking more likely as more people show interest. One regular contributor to the old mag who is still a very good friend is now a web designer, and he has offered help, which is a big step in the right direction, as I am a rubbish designer.

Hi Martin! Very glad to see you here. What are you reading these days?I will be glad to read, and maybe someday contribute.
― Well, because whatever happened changed him. (Dr. Superman), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:57 (fourteen years ago) link
Hi Dan!
I don't read so many now - some manga (Black Jack and Nana are huge favourites), a few writers in the US mainstream (Morrison, Millar, Bendis), some of those nice cheap reprint collections (most Showcases, the occasional Essential, the Dredd collections), less cheap comic strip collections (recently Bringing Up Father and Captain Easy), other things by old favourites like the Hernandezes or Bagge.
― Martin Skidmore, Friday, 6 August 2010 22:38 (fourteen years ago) link
Oh man, I am fiending to get more Black Jack
― elephant rob, Saturday, 7 August 2010 01:15 (fourteen years ago) link
I'll take this under consideration - heaven knows if my writing is worthy (currently esconced in Life, A User's Manual, which every few pages causes me to lay my head down for the hubris of ever considering my prose decent), but I may submit an idea or two sometime in the next few days (presuming I don't get distracted by something shiny).
Also, if I may add to the chorus, very nice to see you back (which sounds strange, considering I'm kind of a dilletante on this board myself).
― R Baez, Saturday, 7 August 2010 17:19 (fourteen years ago) link
Hi Martin, good to see you back.
Tuomas, your English has never struck me as being problematic.

R Baez, I think we're all dilletantes now.
― Well, because whatever happened changed him. (Dr. Superman), Saturday, 7 August 2010 20:50 (fourteen years ago) link
If you've expressed an interest in maybe contributing and haven't received an email from me, please send me an email (address in the question above) so that I can send some more info.
― Martin Skidmore, Saturday, 7 August 2010 21:12 (fourteen years ago) link
I'd definitely be interested in reading, though I doubt I'd have anything worthwhile to contribute. My only comic writing so far has been a dismal blog that was unceremoniously abandoned before starting even one of the long-form articles I had meant to use it as a venue for.

Don't know who ACKACKETC is,
It’s Kit in Australia, if you remember me at all. I actually ran into C3fn Rid0ut at the Opera House afterparty on Saturday night and thought of you and this thread! But I dunno if you guys did know each other, and he was talking about the difficulty of getting paying editors to commission pieces, so didn’t say anything.
^unhelpful post
― Teddybears.SHTML (sic), Friday, 13 August 2010 01:18 (fourteen years ago) link
I wish I were a paying editor again! Not that FA paid much, but it did start turning a profit so I paid contributors. Since my costs are so tiny in starting a website, I am not even thinking about money for it. I won't be thinking about anything like advertising unless it gets big, and we haven't even started yet.

Is that Arabic Teen Titans the comic about the rather large team of superheroes where each one embodies one of the 500 virtues of God?

My article is online now, you can find it under "revies":
http://comiczine-fa.com/
Some of you might notice that the article is partly based on a discussion we had here on ILC: Why do so many male comic artists draw women that look like each other?
The is beginning to look quite nice! I loved the new comic strip ("The Receiver"), you should check that one out.

DMZ #60
Berlin #16
I took so long to write the first of these that the following issue had already come out by the time I submitted it. Ho hum.
