All about the AUTHORITY

I've read the first 5 ishes of Authority: Revolutions, and yes it's very good. But, what arc did this Jenny Quantum and her dad get fleshed out? I only read up through Millar's first arc, which I remember being the one that introduced JQ.

Could you clarify the question, Mr. ILC Sir?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

In what arc/under which writer's watch (haha geddit?) do we find out who Jenny Quantum's pa is? And is that Robbie Morrison's run worth bothering with, just to catch up with the story?

Leeeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Ok with no help from youse guys, I can say that this stuff is "on the hook!" Even if Brubaker is turning this into Stormwatch again, the 'new' Jenny Q is a stroke of the genius.

Leeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

I would guess that Robbie Morrison fleshed out them out. I didn't read his run so can't say for sure and I don't remember Millar doing much to develop her during the rest of his run, apart from her ageing a little.

I wish I had the spare cash to pick this up.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

I've never read the Authority!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

Jordan, if you like Planetary (you like Planetary, right?), you'd like this, which is similar but more BOOM BANG WHOMP to Planetary's HMMM DO YOU SEE NOW? It also helps to have read Ellis's run on Stormwatch, which is the Authority predecessor.

Brubaker's run is very good so far, although the entertainment value is a wee bit disposible.

And: I really can't stand Millar's run. Everything that I dislike about him (reductive politics, one-dimensional characters, bad to cheesy dialogue), I found on his run.

Also: Dustin Nguyen is probably the best artist to work on Authority, including Hitch & Quitely.

No, do tell! I hope they outline a popular dance. "He was doing.. the foxtrot!"

i read a bunch of this... well pretty much all of it, and i thought v1 was awesome, v2 was ok, and v3 was pretty ok.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 21 April 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

i like a) that it's in a different superheroverse than i'm used to (w/o billions of years of continuity) and b) the big-budget scifi feeling

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 21 April 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

I've only read volume 1 but yeah it was supercool... i thought it was supposed to get even better once millar/hitch came on; is that not the case?

dave k, Friday, 21 April 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Millar/Hitch was also great, just different.

I haven't touched v3 at all!

Dan (Shocking) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 April 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

I much prefer the Millar stuff, although the Ellis part is definitely the most non-intolerable Ellis I've read.

I can Hitler the Brubaker run, if anyone fancies.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:13 (nineteen years ago)

(don't let ILM know that Hitler is the new why-ess-aye)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

That's okay, the word "Hitler" doesn't generally draw attention to itself.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

The Brubaker run gets pretty good in the second volume.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

yeah definitely my favourite ellis stuff. he does it well. and my favourite millar stuff for that matter, too.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

BIZARRO. I couldn't stand Millar's run. I dug Ellis' run. I actually like Broob's vol. 1 a lot, though vol. 2 is great minus the mehnding.

c(''c) (Leee), Friday, 21 April 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

Loved Ellis' run. Millar's run kinda lost it towards the end - the "Evil Doctor" story was sorta fun though. I had a look at Morrison's (Robbie, that is) run and it seemed like pure shit. Brubaker's stuff has been fun in a trad superheroics way.

What I'm absolutely stoked about is the thought of Grant Morrison writing this - all the insanity they'd never have let him get away with in JLA in one juicy monthly package.

ps. The reason that I appear, to the casual observer, to be GM's bitch; is that I am.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Monday, 24 April 2006 11:09 (nineteen years ago)

Get in line :)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 24 April 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

I finally read the Ellis run a while back. Meh, it's alright. The big problem with the Authority is they are all such annoying characters with their smug self-satisfaction and we-know-best-for-you-ness.

Has anyone done a story in which they turn out not to know best? That is, they barrel in to some complicated Earth situation, do something decisive, and then realise after the fact that i) they have made the situation worse and ii) the problem is not fixable by someone coming in and kicking someone's arse? This kind of thing is the problem with that whole superheroes-in-the-real-world shtick (which I am amazed people aren't bored of yet, given that it's been a big superhero trope since at least the early 1980s).

The other narrative problem with the Authority is the way they typically kill their enemies, leaving no room for "So Mr Hawksmoor, we meet again" moments.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 24 April 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

The Authority aren't anything like the real world!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 24 April 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

OTOH, in Ellis comics there should be lots of

"But...but... you're DEAD!!!"
"No, my cigarette-smoking friend, that was Superman Analogue #341. I am Superman Analogue 43-A2! Prepare to DIE!!!" moments...

Ray (Ray), Monday, 24 April 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

The Authority aren't anything like the real world!

yeah, but it's all billed as "Amazingly powerful heroes interact with world in away that Superman doesn't". Because Superman isn't annoying.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 24 April 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

How many Superman comics do you own, exactly?

It's the other side of the coin, innit. Superman does the virtuous thing and it always works, The Authority does the unvirtuous thing (within reason) and it always works.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 24 April 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

Has anyone done a story in which they turn out not to know best?

This was pretty much the basis of Brubaker's run.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Monday, 24 April 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

i like vol 1 way better than grant morrison's jla stuff.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 24 April 2006 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Someone explain this Wiki entry to me. (I.e. Is it vandalism?)
Authority Vol 2.

Apollo was mainly neglected as a character during this run, although the Engineer does reveal to Apollo that she once had sex with The Doctor, something she has never told her lover, Jack Hawksmoor.

This also marks the appearance of the infamous canopied four-poster bed. In the most intimate scene between Apollo and The Midnighter yet, the pair wake at dawn in their bed on the Carrier. Some fans found this scene objectionable, especially on account of the canopy.

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

The Authority wants hen fap.

occasional mongrel (kit brash), Saturday, 7 October 2006 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

oh, maybe people thought that a four-poster bed with a canopy is, like, totally faggy, and thus insulting to the characters' uberbutch nature? or something similarly stupid.

occasional mongrel (kit brash), Saturday, 7 October 2006 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

The Midnighter's the butch one, Apollo's a total queen...

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Monday, 9 October 2006 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

I think people just thought the four-poster bed was stupid.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 October 2006 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

I am more than reasonably certain that that is not me.

Isn't slash usually about folks who actually aren't shagging in the originating text?

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 08:49 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, the Engineer/Jenny Sparks fic was sorely disappointing.
