Aquaman: The Movie!

Okay, no such thing exists, but I watched The Jacket last night, and I firmly believe that Kris Kristofferson should play Aquaman, like NOW.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 4 July 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

there's a show called Entourage on Yankee TV which I believe is some kind of sitcom based around movie stars. I know for a fact it involves a running subplot about a terrible Aquaman film that's ready to be made.

Vic Fluro, Monday, 4 July 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

What is this fascination on (North) American TV with itself?
It's all been downhill since Larry Sanders.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 4 July 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

All comics about writing comics to thread. Also Stephen King.

Vic Fluro, Monday, 4 July 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, Kris Kristofferson should totally be cast as some grizzled old superhero (unless he already has been in that dreadful looking Kurt Russell pic), and yeah, I know about Blade.
Hell, maybe he could be Green Arrow.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 4 July 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

He'd make a really great Green Arrow...

Kristofferson as GA = genius!

TS: Kris Kristofferson vs Viggo Mortensen

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Viggo Mortensen for Aquaman or Green Arrow?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

And Mark Wahlberg is Guy Gardner, clearly.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Ewwwwwwww. Only because I kinda like MW Theee Actore. Vince Vaughn, however, is total GG material.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

And with Jon Favreau as Kilowog!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

What about that kid from Problem Child? He must be grown up enough to play Guy Gardner. Or maybe Wesley from Mr. Belvedere?

TVGuide.com says YES to Aquaman Smallville Spin-Off!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 10 November 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Hal Lindsey predicted this.

But seriously, if it's the same actor, it's as himbo (mimbo?) as the Tarzan show, and doomed from the outset. Plus, it has to live up to Patrick Duffy's legacy, and how's that possible?

scamperingalpaca (Chris Hill), Thursday, 10 November 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

There's even a pithy article about this in today's National Post!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 10 November 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Holy fuck, they are really actually serious about this!

waitwaitwait - 'as he comes to realize he is something more than human'???? did aquaman go thru his adolescence and stuff thinking he was a normal dude and stuff and then suddenly look around one day and go 'hey wait a minute - i've been underwater this whole time!'

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

i don't get how aquaman (boy?) showed up in smallville in the first place. isn't smallville landlocked?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Clark Kent superdug a canal from Atlantic Ocean to Kansas.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 14 November 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I watched this episode of Smallville because it looked like it was going to be very funny. AND IT WAS. Aquaman suddenly turned up out of nowhere in a LAKE in Smallville and was there to battle Lex Luthor, who had some sort of weird weapon that threatened to wipe out all of the fish in the ocean. Aquaman had a really bad Boston accent and was kind of like a bad Matt Damon crossed with an Abercrombie and Fitch model. I guess the show is going to recast Aquaman, which is too bad because this guy was a hoot. He made the rest of the cast look accomplished.

KSTFUNS (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

So is Smallville Lex evil now? I thought he was good-bad-but-not-evil.

Vic Fluro (Vic Fluro), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

He's...kind of evil. He has these plans for world domination (he's running for the senate), but then he still ends up helping Clark now and again (like last week when Clark was hallucinating that everyone was turning against him).

KSTFUNS (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

That strikes me as classic modern Luthor (also posibly classic classic Luthor, but I haven't read much) - always gauging a small victory now versus a mindfuck in future. Also weirdly protective of Superman in that no-one else should get to kill him.

OMG: Ving Rhames cast as Aquaman!!!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

From AICN - "The trades are afire with news that Ving Rhames has been cast opposite male model Will Toale in The CW’s “Aquaman” pilot."

Guessing Ving will be either mentor or arch nemesis. Black Manta, if they're going literal.

And doesn't "male model" fill you with hope? Though Welling's also a model, and he does okay, though they don't stretch his range much on "Smallville".

scamperingalpaca (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

smallville aquaman was kinda funny... a real bro

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

i love the aquaman stuff in entourage (best show on tv)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

There was an episode of Smallville where Clark and Papa Luthor switched brains and Wellington actually got to ACT, and did a very good job.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

Similar to Boreanaz on Angel, Welling shines when he plays Red Kryptonite Clark or alternate personality Kal-El. He had a nice emotional breakdown after the recent death, too.

Entourage is on my library hold list. Looking forward to seeing that show.

scamperingalpaca (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

entourage is like crack

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

Entourage is surprisingly fantastic, and the second season was actually better than the first. They just increased the order for third season, too.

The Aquaman episode of Smallville might be my least favorite since the "X-Files before the aliens" days of monster-of-the-week. Some of it was so terrible I thought I had accidentally flipped over to the Gong Show. I mean, I didn't, but if it'd been thirty years ago and I was stoned, I might have.

So the spinoff will, at least, be better (and I know it's not actually a spinoff). And Ving Rhames, come on. I can already sense the "does Black Manta look like a bitch?" .signatures.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

He'd better have a waterproof bandaid on his neck.

No one looks like a bitch standing next to Aquaman! Except maybe Vibe.

i know! i'm thrilled!

i really think it's one of the best-made (as in written, acted, and directed) shows on tv.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

I was real iffy on the guy playing my boy Vincent Chase at first, but he grew on me: it kind of works that he seems bland compared to everyone else on the show, whether that's deliberate or not. And Bob Saget's cameo alone ... I mean, getting laughs out of a Bob Saget cameo might be the easiest thing in the world, but that doesn't make it any less great.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

i think that's absolutely deliberate. it really seems like a realistic potrayal of what a successful actor star's personality would be like... totally charming but somewhat blank and passive at the same time.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

i wish i was watching entourage right now

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

it's sort of like a webcomic [...] only there's no pictures, just words

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

totally charming but somewhat blank and passive at the same time.

Yeah, exactly -- and with the exception of the Mandy Moore thing, almost detached.

I love the fact that Kevin Dillon's best/most memorable role may always be that of failed actor Johnny Drama.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

yeah the mandy moore plot was a good way to tease out a little more depth from the character, especially that streak of irrationality he has.

kevin dillon is so great in this!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

See, when has anyone EVER said that before? At a screening of True Crime? Okay, Platoon, but he's a little overshadowed there.

But he IS great. I don't mean to be dissing him, but I don't remember ever being impressed by him before, much less thinking he was this funny. I don't know if that's shitty luck or if he just found the one role perfect for him, but it makes it even better, that meta element.

(I'm also a sucker for the Ralph Macchio episode.)

To bring it back to Aquaman, they did a great job of picking the perfect superhero for that arc -- hokey enough that you can understand Vince's problem with it, well known enough that the people at home know who he is, not made-up like some dumb "Astro-Man" or "Star-Helmet" or something like most shows would do, and a great match for James Cameron. If it was Batman, you'd want to kick Vince for not doing it, and if it was Speedball, you'd kick him for even thinking of it. I think when I said "surprisingly fantastic," I'm going to retcon to say that I meant not only "I am surprised at how good this show is" but "the way in which it is good often involves moments that surprise me."
