The best memoriams I've encountered have been David Brothers', Charles Hatfield's, and Chris Sims'.

aw man i remember cracking up to that 'pro file' in the david brothers link, and damage control. seemed like the very coolest dude working there

This Tim O'Neil piece on McDuffie really makes me want to search out his Deathlok run.

i remember reading his pro-file as a nine year old kid, and not knowing what it was he alluded to doing when nobody was looking.

"He also has a complete set of Icon there. He showed me the leather binder he keeps them in."

"Binder."

"Some of them were out, though. He has his clerks indexing them."

"Indexing?"

"He has them go through and pull out quotes of things Icon says that he agrees with. They mark them with Post-it notes. That way when he wants to use them in his speeches…"

"I beg your pardon?"

"He quotes Icon in papers and speeches. Rather, since you write those lines, he quotes you."

Dwayne McDuffie learns that frickin' Clarence Thomas is a big fan of Icon.

Man, I was only vaguely aware of McDuffie's work, but all this stuff of his (like the column above, and that memo) really makes me want to seek out his work. Where to start?

start with Icon!

I can't speak for much, but I always knew I was in for a treat when I was watching Justice League and Dwayne McDuffie's name popped up as writer. S

Season one of JL is way off-kilter - they clearly hadn't found their grounding - but season two through four (3 and 4 renamed Justice League Unlimited) are just amazing. Perfect pieces of superhero entertainment.

I really want to get my hands on some of his Milestone work now.

Milestone was seriously great.

That second season finale, Starcrossed, which he wrote, has probably my favorite Batman moment ever:

Milestone was seriously amazing. I was mostly into Blood Syndicate at the time but got into everything else after the fact and it was pretty much uniformly amazing and excellent.

I'm afraid my "superhero comics? that's kid's stuff, man" phase coincided with the Milestone era - I've got some serious catching up to do.b

Picked up ICON: MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION - diggin' diggin' diggin'.

Coincidentally, when I went to pick up a copy at my lcs, two guys we're reading the trade aloud to each other, enacting scenes out at the counter. Awesome.
