Daredevil #75: What? "The Decalogue" only has five chapters? Nice one, Bendis. Is Daredevil a ninja? How did he train to be a ninja AND go to law school? I'm pretty sure even Bruce Wayne didn't finish college because he was too busy training to fight crime.

Detective Comics #808: I like the art, I don't like the art. Excellent story, picking up from last issue, with Batman not appearing in Batduds again. But I really like Lapham's Robin, because, y'know, Robin's a kid. I guess this might be pre-Identity Crisis as well as pre-War Games, since little Timmy's blissfully angst-free (but Batman sure makes up for that--which is sort of the point of Robin: balance, no?). AND THE RETURN OF PROBABLY MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE CHARACTER (though not really, since I didn't nominate him in the ILC poll), JIM GORDON!!!

JSA: Classified #1: I didn't ask for this, but my comic shop put it in my file, so I bought it. I really like the art. Mainly because Power Girl has big boobies. I am the first comic nerd to notice this.

Teen Titans #26: The entire issue was tainted by the Liefeld image in the "Next Month" box. GROSS. Superboy has soul, but he's not a soldier.

Defenders #1: Maguire inks himself and it looks good. The lettering was pretty good. I mean, it's no Bob Lappan, but it was pretty okay. So I guess Wong is going to get raped and killed and then Silver Surfer will get shot in the head by, um, Rick Jones (I don't even know who that is, except that maybe he's sort of the Snapper Carr of the Marvel U???). Anyway, I like it.

Day of Vengeance #4: The art was really good in this issue. I like it when monkeys fart. Hee hee.

Some of the stuff I read last night...

Lucifer:

Good shit, it seems like it's really building up to something. I find this title somewhat mystifying in that I've been reading it for a year or two and I STILL don't quite know who all the characters are, and yet it doesn't bother me! Every issue feels like it's the first time I've picked it up and I'm saying, "Ooh, this is good, what's going on?"

Astonishing X-Men:

They're still fighting the Danger-bot? Really?

Walking Dead:

Continues to be a good zombie-soap. If it continues on for another few years like this without getting any better or worse, I'll be perfectly happy, I think.

Shaolin Cowboy #1:

Entertaining! I love the 8 page panorama. Maddie bought the first four issues and I'm looking forward to reading the others.

That Danger-bot is a tough hombre!

I bought one issue of Shaolin Cowboy (#2), and it was OK, and the art was OMG!, but it just struck me as sorta meh. Stupid crab and pony talked too damn much. Jordan, plz report on whether this (and Doc Frankenstein, if Maddie got those as well) are really worth a ding-dong.

I get my schwag today in the maily mail! Wheeeee!

Did anyone else see the weirdly offensive/amusing Battle Pope? I can't figure out what sort of audience it's catered to.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 21 July 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Need: Battle Pope.

Worth a ding-dong: Shaolin Cowboy, if beautiful art and eight-page spreads (I might be exaggerating there) distract you from all the talk. But I just gave up on Otherworld this month due to word fatigue; Shaolin Cowboy seems like a model of concise dialogue in comparison.

Okay, the trend is wearing thin now: Deadworld. I gather it's a relaunching of an old zombie title (wow! Just like Romero, but for comics!) but do you know how many zombie comics I'm buying each week?

Madolan, Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I may actually be able to get my boyfiend to read comics (other than manga) if they are about Shaolin stuff or zombies. There seem to be a lot of zombie comics out right now, including the comification of Shaun of the Dead, last week.

jocelynhasgotnogrammer (Jocelyn), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

There ARE a lot of zombie comics out now. I haven't read any of the ones with Romero's name on them, or the Shaun of the Dead one (which on first flip looked to be a straight-as-a-board adaptation of the movie).

I don't know if Maddie or I mentioned Zombie Tales on another thread, but it's got some amusing short stories in it, with contributions by Mark Waid and Keith Giffin (writing AND drawing).

Ooooh, I should look for that when I go back to pick up my Superman "Sacrifice" bs.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 21 July 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Sacrifice got a little better this week.
I haven't been keeping up with any other "BUILDUP TO ULTIMATE CRISIS" stuff other than Omac project, though, so maybe the shockah isn't so much of a shockah after all.

ESSENTIAL KILLRAVEN is ACE right up until Bill Mantlo replaces Don McGregor for an issue and Killraven has to fight THE PIMP OF THE FUTURE. And a tribe of embarrassing seventies blaxploitation people IN GRASS SKIRTS who call him 'honky'.

WTF OF THE WORLDS Bill Mantlo!

"Did anyone else see the weirdly offensive/amusing Battle Pope? I can't figure out what sort of audience it's catered to"

I suppose I was part of that audience back when it was first released (pre death of JPII) Since I had a catholic education, I felt curious when I saw it lost in the middle of that No Man's Land that is the indie comics section of the Previews.

I should admit it was a bit funny for someone in his late teens who was in a very good mood for the most of the time. Funny enough for me to buy two miniseries, a one shot, and a spin-off (starring Saint Michael) But I don't know what would I think if I gave it a read now.

I think that saying that must have made a huge fool of myself.

Lucifer's not bad at all. I can't bear any of Sandman's spin offs, and sometimes I can't stand re-reading old Sandman issues either, the cliche's become so dry it makes me sick. That being said, Lucifer has become an entity of its own. Not many of the characters stand out apart from Lucifer and Elaine Belloc, the storyline moves quite slowly, and if anybody asks me of what my favorite scene is, I'd have no idea of what to answer, because I don't remember many of them. What appeals to me is the atmosphere, it has a very distinctive mood that I find quite appealing; a feeling of tension, and, like jordan said, build up. The regular artist (Peter Gross) is terrible, but, in a very strange way, this is a good thing for me, because I never get to feel comfortable when reading it and that adds to the tension. I'm gonna miss it when it ends.

Defenders #1:

this morning I read Huk's posting of this and went "oh that's out already? thought it wasn't for months. I better go to the dodge comic shop at lunch." I just got back with the last two copies they had, the second part of Chase: LOTDK and SEVENTY BUCKS OF BACK ISSUES. Oops.
