I was a bit wary abt Kochalka after his silly long ago dustups w/ Jim Woodring etc in the Journal abt 'craft' but his new comic is easily the best thing I've read in 2005 - very clever, everso funny, all v. 'craftful' - anyone else seen this?

..reaaaaaaally? i thought it was kinda "eh". well, i dunno, his prejudice against superhero comics being given an airing, not particularly great in terms of anything that actually happens...

i found most of the design jokes (the back cover strip particularly) funnier than most of the actual comic. i dunno. the vaguely nihilist bit at the ending doesn't seem to carry much weight, i think bcz of the i-don't-like-superheroes-so-NER-ness of it all, whereas i find a lot of his stuff amazingly affecting, considering.

it was better than his comic with craig thompson though.

prejudice against super-heroes? what comic did you read?

I liked it, but it's not the best thing he's done. It kinda reminded me of Mystery Men, especially the angry dude who is so like Mr Furious.

I prefer stuff like Quit Your Job and Kissers, and his music.

He's said in interviews that he's not intending to mock superheroes.

Yeah, I mean his Hulk piece was great!

"Kitty In A Coma" is the pinnacle of Western Civilization.

SuperF*ckers (Theme Song)
© 2005 James Kochalka

We're always in our clubhouse getting high
SuperF*ckers!
Everybody wishes we would die
SuperF*ckers!

Here we come, like a bomb,
everybody run and hide.

Our dicks are stuck in the Playstation 3
SuperF*ckers!
Everybody wishes they could be
SuperF*ckers!

Here we come, like a bomb,
Everybody f*ckin' run and hide.

one month passes...
I finally read this today and it was (a) awesome and (b) totally not anti-superhero. (Except inasmuch as it was superhero characters but not a superhero comic.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 14 October 2005 07:06 (twenty years ago)

It's totally a super-hero comic! It's the Legion!

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 14 October 2005 11:05 (twenty years ago)

Actually now that I think about it again I guess they do save the universe from impending destruction at some point. So perhaps it is a superhero comic after all.
